  1. I'm not going to pretend like I was in favor of the signing, because I was against it. However.... thus far this season Lohse has outpitched two guys that I was clamoring the Brewers to throw big money at (Sabathia and Greinke). I wouldn't give him away in a trade, but I'd look into moving him for the right offer. I think that the same factors that contributed to him staying unsigned so long as a free agent are in play here though, and the market seems pretty soft for a guy throwing as well as he has.
  2. I'd think that the use of PEDs is very psychologically addictive in the least. As for Braun's history of usage, obviously no one knows for sure but him. If I had to bet though, I'd bet that he's used since college. It would be great if he just started in 2011, but time will tell I suppose. The real question to me is did he use in 2012? If he did, that took some real brass. When was this clinic in Miami busted?
  3. I have to admit that I don't have a clue about the guy that they got back, but I'm not going to complain about getting something for nothing.
  4. Has anyone seen the editorial that popped up on the JS today? Are they honestly suggesting that the Brewers eat the rest of Braun's contract to "make the most powerful statement any owner has ever made"? Maybe journalism is dead.
  5. If anyone claims Ramirez, you just let them have him. I think that's highly doubtful though.
  6. As monty57 has laid out many times, they're not going to get blown away with an offer. Unless you consider getting "blown away" getting a B-grade prospect... and even that I think is probably a long shot. If I'm a GM, I really am not interested in parting with anything of value for Lohse at his age & salary. If I have to part with something of value, I'm going to target a younger & more cost-effective target. I agree. Lohse is probably one of the rare cases where a pitcher has less value in a deadline deal because he is 'controlled' as opposed to a rental. I'd bet that the remaining dollars on that contract are making people a bit gunshy.
  7. Looks like the Rangers learned from last year. Garza was definitely the best arm realistically available.
  8. Wow, Jim Powell pulling no punches on Twitter his twitter account.
  9. The bottom line here is that Braun got some horrible advice from his handlers, or was incredibly naive to think that the truth wouldn't eventually come out in this day and age. Had he just taken his medicine from the start, he would have been much better off. Now he is basically a pariah. I don't think that this is going to turn out well for the Brewers either. I suspect that he's been juicing all along, and if that's the case, this contract could look horrible in a couple years. I'd be willing to bet that all big money contracts in the future will have some language that will allow teams to void the deal if the player is found to have used PED's.
  10. I was going to say A-ball pitcher to the Jays for Claudio Vargas, but they just released him...
  11. No way are the Tigers going to trade their top prospect for a package of goods from the Brewers. I could maybe see it if the reliever in question was elite, young and under control for a few more years... but K-Rod is none of those. Aoki is a very good player, but he's not going to sweeten things enough to pry a guy like that away. Think about the trades that the Brewers made around the deadline when they were in contention. The only time they gave up a top prospect was for Sabathia, and I don't believe that LaPorta was as highly rated as this guy. Usually, it was low minor guys or fringe guys at AAA. I wouldn't expect it to be any different for a guy that anyone could have had for free about 3 months ago.
  12. I really don't think this team has a chance to be very good next year. All that I hear about is Braun, Ramirez and Hart not replicating last year but what about Segura, Gomez and to a lesser extent Aoki playing out of their minds? There doesn't seem to be much help coming from the minors either. I'd be inclined to start the rebuild now, trade whoever you can, and get rid of all the scouting staff at the least. Hopefully, this would speed up the route back to competitiveness.
  13. I think that there is a very good chance that Ramirez is in the mix next year at first.
  14. Everyone can be a first baseman on the 2013 Milwaukee Brewers! Only requirement is to never have played the position. Ha, that's right. I actually meant this post for the Owings thread, put it on this one by mistake, but probably still applies here.
  15. I might do Aoki for Olt straight up, but I'm not sure. Olt has been brutal in the minors this season with a ridiculous strikeout rate. This with the corrected vision, so I'm not sure what the excuse is now, but I'm not sold on the guy. At any rate, if the Rangers want to deal, they had better be ready to part with some talent, unlike last year. Otherwise, they can go pound sand.
  16. Teague does nothing for me. I'd rather take the chance that the new coaching staff can get through to Jennings.
  17. I'd trade Lohse and Ramirez together for nothing, just to shed their salaries, but I don't think Ramirez is tradable at this point... maybe as an August deal, but I doubt it. Lohse alone might get you a low minors guy with some upside and warts or a failed prospect like the Cubs got for Feldman, but it all depends on how gun shy his contract makes teams.
  18. I think that there were some Cardinal/Astros teams in the early-mid 80's that may not have had a guy with 15 homers.
  19. Way too early yet, but from the very little that I've seen from Hellweg- and based on the relatively low K rates he's had in the minors as a starter, it looks like he is going to need a ton of work on his secondary stuff to have much of a future as a SP. If he doesn't develop a secondary pitch he might end up as a Kammy Loe type sinkerballer RP... not a horrible thing, but I don't think it's reaching his full potential either. From what I've seen from Hellweg's delivery, I'm thinking he'd be a good candidate to work with on a slider as opposed to a curve.
  20. Come on, let's not compare Hellweg to Hendrickson just yet. He's been victimized by poor defense, and unlike Hendrickson has MLB velocity. Hendrickson was more hyped as well... there were at least two years of it with him, even though he threw 86 mph.
  21. I'd have been more excited about bringing Mayo in 5 years ago, but the deal doesn't look too bad. I'd definitely rather have him than Redick. Ellis is a tossup if he played to his career norms, but Mayo should be better than Ellis was last year for less money.
  22. Frank Thomas was one of the first players to publicly campaign for steroid testing way back in the 90's, I believe... to the MLBPA's chagrin. Nothing would surprise me in all of this, but I would be pretty surprised if he was a juicer.
  23. Arizona definitely looks like the best match to me. Another thing to consider is that they may overvalue Gallardo a tad due to his past performance against them, including the NLDS. Just from what I've seen/read on the two pitchers, I'd prefer Bradley, but it looks like he is on the untouchable list for them. Skaggs looks to have less upside on the MLB level, but it looks like he is a pretty 'safe' prospect. May not be a bonafide ace, but could be an upper rotation guy who the Brewers could put in the rotation from day one.
  24. Checked the stats, and with RISP, Goldschmidt is hitting .387, slugging .760 and OPS is over 1.2! Overall, 20 homers, leading the league in RBI's and his OPS over .930. Whats not to like? Arizona is not rolling, but they are in first place in that division, and I think that wouldn't be the case without Goldschmidt... he's accounted for almost 30 percent of their runs. The only knock on him is that he plays 1B, but what position player on a contender is having a better season with the bat? I don't see one.
