  1. I hate Edmonds leading off less than Gomez in the 2-hole. I think Macha is official in his throw crap at the wall and hope it sticks phase. Have to agree with that and I really don't like Edmonds. Just play Gomez in CF and get rid of Edmonds. I hate flippy glove guy.
  2. I really like what the Brewers have begun doing. They have 3 levels of pitch counts in the minors... pitches in an inning, pitches in a game, and pitches in a season (total IP pitched). At first glance pitches in a inning may season a bit weird, but if you think about it, is pitching 7 innings that each last 15 pitches more fatiguing, or pitching a single inning of 40 pitches? When a pitcher is only going 15 pitches at a time there are periods of rest and recovery, pitching 40 straight pitches is incredibly taxing on the body. Think of it in terms of weight lifting. You do it in sets with a short rest between because your muscles get tired. Tired muscles are more likely to get injured and are not as effective. If you do to much in the early sets you are not going to be able to do as much in the later sets.
  3. No problem as long as we are clear that the payroll isn't likely to be this high next year.
  4. Ok, so yesterday you have Counsell in the 1 and Weeks in the 2. I've been asking for Weeks in the 2 hole even before the season began...but then Macha put Edmonds in front of Hart who has been raking in the 5 spot. Why mess with Hart? Yes, Hart had a HR, but I was not happy with moving him from behind McGehee. He split up the lefties by moving Hart. Not really a big deal and actually a good idea.
  5. Here is the link, link The Brewers can still add players come the trade deadline if they can be competitive again. Absorbing Suppan's salary doesn't affect that. "Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio said the decision to absorb a $10 million hit by releasing Jeff Suppan on Monday won't affect the team's ability to add players in midseason trades. But that's only if the team begins to perform better on the field." He does not say in your quote that they are staying within their budget. For all we know he might go over budget to get a player of need. According to this, I believe that to be the case. I couldn't find the original JSOnline article.
  6. More viewers would probably lead to more advertisement revenues.
  7. It was if you dug a little deeper and looked at the link in the article.
  8. The Brewers payroll used to be just under 36 million, and now it is 90 million. With room to go up according to Mark A himself. Not sure where you got this information from but Mark A. was saying they would probably lose money this year and the payroll was maxed out.
  9. Sort of sounds like it was Jeffress' idea.
  10. Gamel was up for approx 95 days last year which I would guess to be about 81ish games. 148 PA over that time period is pretty pathetic. It is less than a start every other game. It isn't overblown. He was jerked around and now has a year of service time during which time we got about a month and a half worth of PA out of him. BA and strikeouts. You will not win hearts and minds with those stats here. I agree with the bolded part.
  11. Is there any logical explanation for Jim Edmonds batting 6th instead of Corey Hart right now? Splits up the lefties.
  12. I don't see any way a team with this kind of lack of pitching, and lack of overall direction, could be considered a playoff contender. As far as I know the were not considered a playoff contender unless they got a little lucky. The future isn't really as grim as it seems right now. We should have some good pitching up by 2011 and a decent rotation by 2012.
  13. Where do the Brewers rank among teams in pitching for the last 40 years? It's a track records. And were not just talking about one kid. He is an example of innumerable kids as the stats above prove. What about the Nuege, Gold, etc. Not sure why you think what happened before Melvin took over is relevant. Especially what happened more than a decade ago. I guess what you say is true if you look at the entirety of the Brewers history and ignore the changes made in the recent past.
  14. What are the chances that variance slides in one direction so heavily? Usually a team is lucky one day and unlucky another day. I don't by a 20 game swing in wins can be explained by variance, or luck. Not very likely but is can happen. As an example we had a 28-17 record in one run games in 2008. Even for a good team that should be much closer to .500. A handful of runs at the right or wrong time can make a huge difference. In 2007 we missed tying for the division lead by one bad pitch by Cordero. He gave up a walk off HR to Ramirez and that was the difference.
  15. Hah, beat you to it, kind of.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Just to put some numbers with it. * 10% of top 10 hitting prospects bust. * 31% of top 10 pitching prospects bust. * 21% of top 11-25 hitting prospects bust. * 32% of top 11-25 pitching prospects bust. * 35% of top 26-50 hitting prospects bust. * 33% of top 26-50 pitching prospects bust. * 45% of top 51-75 hitting prospects bust. * 39% of top 51-75 pitching prospects bust. * 43% of top 76-100 hitting prospects bust. * 43% of top 76-100 pitching prospects bust. * 59% of ‘B grade’ hitting prospects bust. * 52% of ‘B grade’ pitching prospects bust. * 83% of ‘C grade’ hitting prospects bust. * Around 75% of all ‘C grade’ pitching prospects bust
  16. I know it's complicated, but I also know that's there's a better chance that Arnett is a bust than otherwise right now. Kind of true of all minor league pitchers. In addition, I really don't see any help on the way as far as starters go. Not this year but over the next 2 there should be. At least according to the guys on this site who's opinions I would trust on the matter. I am not sure about top of the rotation talent but I think at least a couple should be middle of the rotation starters. Over the last few years there has been a definite shift in the Brewers minor league pitching philosophy. It was to late to help us this year or last year but should pay dividends in the next few years.
  17. You skipped over the most important point of my post. -The important thing is to have a good differential in run scoring and run prevention. Having a very good rotation certainly helps but is not necessary.
  18. We don't need to be the best in the division. We just need to be above average. I agree that we need Parra to pitch to his potential and one other guy to come up through our system for us to have a decent rotation next year. Gallardo, Parra(pitching to potential), Wolf, minor league guy(Butler would be my guess) and Narveson wouldn't be a terrible rotation. I think we have a better chance to have a good rotation in 2012 provided we get a decent guy in trade for Fielder.
  19. Worse pitchers are going to give up more runs so it would stand to reason that they would also be hurt more by errors. The margin of error(ugh) is smaller for lower quality pitchers. Pitchers can control where and how they throw the ball for the most part. That is why looking at BB and K rates are probably much better than looking at ERA.
  20. and there are playoff teams with crappy pitching all the time. Teams even win the world series with average pitching. The important thing is to have a good differential in run scoring and run prevention. I am sure the Cardinals in 2006 are not typical but to make statements like "Wolf is a legit #3 on a mediocre staff, but certainly wouldn't be the #3 on a legit contender" is wrong. Bush and Davis pitching like they have in their careers and not having bad years would have put us close to the top of the division and potentially in playoff contention. They have been pretty poor this year and our record reflects that. ERA of Cardinals World Series starters in 2006 Reyes 5.06 Weaver 5.18 Carpenter 3.09 Wainwright 3.12
  21. Protection from the standpoint of how the pitcher chooses to work a hitter is real, however I'm guessing that the end results because of how the pitcher works a certain hitter might not fluctuate very much. At least not enough to show a statistically significant change. That said there is certainly a difference in hitting in front of the pitcher or hitting 3-5. Pitchers are going to pitch to hitters how they are going to pitch to hitters regardless of who is hitting behind them unless they are ahead of the pitcher. They pitch around you a little more in front of the pitcher. Game situations may dictate a change in approach not because of who is hitting behind them. They are not pitching to Fielder in certain situations even though McGehee is hitting very well behind them. If protection exists why isn't Gomez seeing any benefits from it. You are free to believe what you want but I will put protection in the same bucket with strikeouts and small ball. It may matter in high school, college and the low minors when the talent levels are pretty disparate but once you get to the majors all the hitters and fielders except for pitchers are pretty close in talent.
  22. I think you are probably right. I hope that they can get a pitcher who will contribute by the end of next year. I think almost no matter what we are not going to be in the playoff hunt in 2011. All of our impact pitching http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif is still more than a year out.
  23. By the time anybody drafted this year reaches the majors Gamel and McGehee will have used up at least half their service time.(Gamel 3 years/McGehee 4 years after the 2012 season) That is assuming a very fast rise to the majors.(A ball 2011, AA 2012, the majors 2013) Middle infielders would be my preference but a guy who is athletic and can play 3B can probably play any corner infield of OF spot.
