  1. Weeks will be #3 on this team in RBI even out of the leadoff spot. Doubtful. The guy 3rd in RBI will be whoever hits behind Fielder and Braun, our 2 best OBP guys. I don't think the pitchers or Escobar will get on base enough for Weeks to get a lot of RBI's.
  2. I guess the lesson to be learned here is to never give managers sharp objects to play with. I would expect more from an engineer.(I am assuming engineers know a lot about numbers maybe that was not the case in Macha's day) It is also disappointing considering Milwaukee has a front office that employs people to look at numbers.
  3. That would work for me. The discussion really does come down to what we could realistically expect. I believe in The Book's lineup optimization but it will not happen anytime soon if ever. The only thing we can realistically expect to happen out of the lineup optimization is batting the pitcher #8. Most lineups are pretty close to optimized already since the most important thing is to get your best hitters at the top. As long as you get your 5 best hitters at the top, you are pretty close to optimizing. Even with a completely optimized lineup it would only ad about 10-12 runs. The biggest thing that gets left out of any summary of The Book's lineup optimization is never letting your 4 or 5 pitchers hit. I think it is something like 40 of the 50 runs that lineup optimization would gain you. That of course isn't very practical unless it is September after call ups.
  4. No it isn't. They signed an extension just last year.
  5. I agree that Escobar could also be arguably our worst hitter. I had a thread on it about a month back and they are both so similar that I wouldn't chose who will have the better year between them. My problem with the lineup tool is that it keeps putting either Escobar or Gomez in the top of the order even though most projections have them as 2 of our worst 3 hitters. Now if we platoon Hart/Edmonds I think we can expect that platoon to be amongst our best 5 hitters.
  6. We only get around $30M in revenue sharing a year. I am not a fan of a salary cap in baseball but I feel with just revenue sharing teams like the Yankees who own their own TV network would just negotiate a smaller TV contract and put the money into their owners pocket and then into the team circumventing revenue sharing.
  7. I don't think it's fair to call him the worst hitter on the team or even the worst starter Yes it is. Up to this point he has a below .300 career OBP. Most of his value is in his glove. Also, here are a couple interesting articles on optimizing lineups. Fangraphs - Brewers with the 4th worst optimized lineup. Beyond the Boxscore - Nice summary of lineup optimizing according to The Book.
  8. As was said before the ideal situation is to have Gomez-Escobar 1-2 or 2-1 followed by Braun-Fielder-Weeks. That is only true is Gomez and Escobar can get on base.
  9. His range looks bad because he is slow and he never dives but it is actually pretty good because he has good instincts and plays back a few steps.
  10. In hindsight Edmonds switched with Gomez would have been perfect for today. Without hindsight I believe almost everybody agreed that Edmonds should be either #2 or #6. Split away from Fielder. Most of Macha's bad moves or lack of needed substitutions stemmed from the bad lineup. I should add that one of the unfortunately unsurprising things out of today was the lack of offense out of the bottom of our order. I doubt they will be as bad as they were today but I think many people expect the bottom of our order to be where rallies go to die.
  11. Implying a guy is "crazy" because he would rather do other things with his time than work for the league minimum is fair? I guess I disagree with your concept of fair. Dye may be asking for what seems to be an unrealistic amount but maybe he's decided it's not worth it for him to play unless he gets a certain amount of money. He's only making the same kind of calculation that everybody in the world makes every day but he's singled out as being off his nut? I don't get that.Where did anybody imply Dye was crazy? They described the amount as crazy. I also missed the player/agent bashing against anybody besides Hart. Hart's WAR over the last 3 years, 4.5, 1.1, 0.8 Dye's WAR over the last 3 years -0.6, 1.8, -0.2
  12. FSN just listed Edmonds hitting 6th with McGehee 5th. If true I like that better. I don't like a lefty behind Fielder.
  13. I would have preferred Edmonds or Zaun #2. That way we split up the lefties. I think that is more important than "protection" for Fielder in the lineup. You can't bring in a LOOGY to pitch to the guy ahead of Braun and let him also pitch to Braun. That means if you want to use your LOOGY you have to wait for Fielder or IBB Braun.
  14. I am not sure we really learned our lesson. It sounded like other teams were only offering Wolf 2 years.
  15. I agree, however familiarity breeds contempt. My guess is that if we had Dye and Hart was out there, people would be calling for us to DFA Dye and pick up Hart. Of course Hart has some positives like being younger and being a bad outfielder instead of almost completely incompetent. Just for reference, Hart's UZR/150 over the last 3 years in RF adds up to -7.7.(6.7, -5.3, -9.1) Dye over that same stretch, -67.4(-21.5, -21.4, -24.5) At least Dye is consistent. UZR isn't perfect but I think we can at least draw from those numbers that Hart is a better defender. Total batting lines over those last 3 years Hart .275/.328/.474/.802 Dye .267/.334/.496/.830
  16. Not really. It would be tough without videogames though. Running water and electricity I guess.
  17. A few years back there was an article on either THT or BP that went over all the MLB umpires and showed the tenancies of where they called balls and strikes. I wish they updated it every year. It was very interesting.
  18. Well his career OBP is only a little over average. On the other hand he walks quite a bit.
  19. As much as some of us like to complain about TH, at least he isn't Richard Justice. Compounding the problem is the fact Jeff Suppan (neck) will start the season on the disabled list. They say that like Suppan is a good pitcher. That is only a problem if we lose 2 other starters.
  20. truthfully the Brewers aren't a player in free agency now and never will be in the current economic setup of baseball. I partially agree with this. We are not a player on the big free agents but I think because we are at least competitive we are a player in the 2nd tier of free agents. I don't think the Suppan deal made us look any better to prospective free agents. A fair deal would. We had to offer Wolf an extra year to land him so I guess I would say we still have to offer more than some other teams. The free agent market has changed drastically since we signed Suppan. Look at what Wolf signed for compared to Suppan.
  21. I think you can almost ignore results for any player in Spring Training. This is especially true for LOOGY's in m opinion. They are put in situations they normally would be in. Mainly pitching to righties. If he can't get lefties out part way in through the season send him down. He has been pretty good getting lefties out previously so we can go with his Spring Training stats or how he has pitched over the last few years.
  22. It would work as a monitor. Not sure how you would get sound.
  23. I think endaround has a pretty accurate guess at around $20M. That really isn't much. Like others have said, he got stability. I started this thread because people were throwing around numbers like $50M+ that he left on the table. That just seemed way out of line.
  24. He would be fine as our 5th starter if we didn't have better options. It isn't just about how good a player is. Soup would be ok as our #1 starter if we didn't have better options. Of course if that was the case we would be in huge trouble.
  25. 08-10 are prearby years. He would have been eligible for arby after this year so 11-13 would be his arby years. We bought out 2 free agent years.
