  1. Will player B really be more consistent? I would think that a player that draws walks would be more consistent that a player who relies on hitting to drive his stats.
  2. Type B free agents(like Shouse) are only a sandwich pick for compensation. Speaking of Shouse, why is someone with his numbers struggling to get a 2 year $6 million offer? That's a lot of money for a LOOGY.
  3. That would be interesting to see. In all seriousness I think it would be a waste to bring up either to platoon.
  4. I have heard that Escobar has a fantastic arm. As good or better than Hardy.
  5. I think it depends on which starting pitcher gets injured this year. We know one of our starters is going to go down and we really don't have good depth there. With the current team and good health, I think we can make the playoffs if we get a little lucky in close games like we did last year.
  6. I know Bush is under market. I also know how much Russ hates the silly idea of "big pitchers" especially when talking about basically average guys. I should have probably put my previous post in blue.
  7. 6-1 win over CC tonight. We have a chance to pull back into first place Saturday night. Of course Denver will have played 2 less games after tomorrow. TV coverage really sucks for this year. No game even on public TV tonight, but the game tomorrow is on both FSN and public TV. Unbelievable. I wish the Bucks would move out of state.
  8. The highest chances for a 3B last year was 416. The lowest qualified SS had 443. I would guess roughly double the chances.
  9. Sam estimated they could sign one more. Post #451 in this thread.
  10. How much more "valuable" is a player who hits .300/.370 than a player than hits .250/.370? Depends on their SLG/OPS. The guy who hit .250 is likely to have a lower SLG unless he hits for A LOT of power. Dunn vs Ramirez 2008 is a good look at guys with almost equal value and got them in drastically different ways. There are things called linear weights. The one I like is wOBA.
  11. Doesn't seem like much money for a big game pitcher like Dave Bush.
  12. The only thing I know about the Prisoner is the little bit at the beginning of the Iron Maiden song. "I am not a number, I am a free man."
  13. Even though developmental expenses are high for MLB (is NHL and NBA scouting cheap?) MLB teams have to put much more money into development of players than other sports do. No, the scouting isn't cheap, but I would guess that there is much more scouting involved in baseball than other sports. I doubt to many of the other sports, except hockey, scout at the high school level as extensively or run player development programs in other countries. There is a big difference in how the sports are run so talking about how baseball has a smaller percentage of their expenses in MLB player contracts is really misleading. If they included money for all the minor league players(including signing bonuses) then there might be a good basis for comparison. Not overpaying for mediocrity is just a good business decision. I have no problem with the Yankees spending their money however they want. I have a problem with the lack of revenue sharing. Edit: It also doesn't seem reasonable to expect player salaries to increase with revenues when MLB is having record breaking years in attendance year after year. I could be wrong, but I think the average age of players is going down as well. Something to check into. If the average age is going down it seems likely that instead of signing that aging veteran to sit on the bench, teams are opting for a young cheap player instead.
  14. MLB already spends less on player salaries as a percentage of revenues than other sports There are more players than just MLB players in baseball. Baseball franchises have many more expenses with scouting and minor league teams than any other professional sport. I think part of the drop in the percentage is partially because teams are starting to pay less for middling talent(fewer Suppan contracts, although that might be just this offseason) and lock up their own players much sooner for reasonable contracts.(Braun type deals)
  15. No, but it is likely that Durham will drop by 40 points while Weeks will improve by 40.
  16. Ricardo Montalban es mas macho.
  17. Better revenue sharing would be a great boon for baseball but a salary cap just isn't needed. My feelings as well. I do think it is sour grapes on Attanasio's part as well. He's upset, heck I'm upset with this whole offseason. It looked like even if we didn't sign either of Sheets or Sabathia we would get at least a couple 1st round picks for them. Now it's looking like we get 2 2nd round picks if we are lucky.
  18. I doubt it has any effect at all. However I do think that all our young players that had a down year in 2008 will rebound and the coaching staff will get undeserved credit.
  19. So I got my Hops N Props tickets last week. It came with a long letter about parking and warning people about drinking and driving. My wife and I already planned to cab our way around town and stay in a motel overnight. There don't look to be any within walking distance of the EAA air museum.
  20. Hypothetically speaking Player A gets 200 singles, Player B gets 100 doubles, no other hits on the season... they could have the same OPS We know that most players fall between certain batting average so we know that something that extreme will probably never happen. You can look at Aramis Ramirez vs Adam Dunn in 2008 to see two players with nearly identical OBP/SLG/OPS and very different BA. I'm not sure how that's mathematically true Ennder and I would really like to see a statistician prove that mathematically. There are a few different kinds of linear weights out there. They give a relative value of each event over the course of a season. Ramirez and Dunn had wOBA's of .384 and .383 respectively.
  21. Do teams do a good job of maintaining their fields in the minors? Do conditions vary a lot from field to field? I have heard that field conditions can cause bad bounces and other problems that can make players look worse than they really are on defense. I think a lot of the defensive metrics for major leaguers rely on play by play video so unless every minor league game is taped, they wouldn't be able to get good metrics. Also, my understanding is that you need several years worth of data on a player for the metrics to be reliable so by the time we would get a good idea of how good a player is, he would be to far along to make a position change using just metrics. I think we have to rely on our minor league scouts. Of course there are other people who know much more about defensive stats than I do. It is my goal to become more versed in defensive stats this offseason.
  22. People who were predicting 85-95 wins had Gallardo playing much of the season for us. He is left off of your comparison. Without Gasllardo I think the wins would have been in the 52-92 rage for predictions.
  23. Oh, ok. I got the impression that you thought the Brewers were slow to pick up on who is going to be a reliever and who is going to be a starter.
  24. I think the thought process behind it is that you can't teach speed and power.
  25. Tony LaRussa comes to mind when people talk about over managing. He would put in 3 different pitchers if the batting order alternated lefties and righties, then throw in a double switch or two. This is in the early innings like the 6th. I don't go to Brewers/Cards games because they are annoying to score.
