While I have some concern about Hoffman, I'm not too worried. Stavinoha hit a homer off his knees, and it was no cheapy. And tonight Hoffman faced two of the better hitters in all baseball in Pujols and Holiday. Sure, it stinks that he blew the lead and gave up back-to-back bombs, but I'd be more concerned if he were getting beat by Jason Kendall types than the Pujols/Holidays of the league. I still have confidence in him going forward, but I would agree that the number of fastballs he's throwing compared to change-ups is a bit puzzling.

Opening Day stories from those who attended?

I saw a Candy Maldonado #48 Jersey, on a white pin stripe jersey with "Brewers" in cursive. Thought that was pretty sweet. I would have found opening day more enjoyable if I did end up catching the same stomach bug that my kids had the last week or so. I ended up leaving to go home in the 5th inning because I felt so miserable. Seeing/smelling the food people were eating certainly didn't help. So instead of yaking on someone I figured I'd go home. Of all the days to get that, it was yesterday. Of course, today I feel just fine. Looking forward to going again Friday. -
I would say that the cheers for Hart far outweighed the boos. I was specifically listening for it, and the boo's weren't anything that bad. It wasn't anywhere near the Wes Helms level. Now, I couldn't tell if Suppan was being booed or the fans were just saying "SOUP." But I would say the cheers for Hart made the boo's almost inaudible.

How can Zaun be any worse than Kendall? Zaun would have to be spectacularly craptastic for him to be worse than Jason Kendall. Edit: Should probably add my prediction. 89-73.

I'm an official, and I have to agree with you on that offensive foul call (I was even surprised by Clark Kellogg's initial reaction to that call). Zoubek was clearly turning away from the contact. It should have been a block. As I watch a game I tend to blurt out calls as I see them. On that one I immediately said "block" only to be quite surprised by the charge call. And the replay made me even more sure it was a block. But what made that a huge call isn't that the Baylor player would have shot two. Recall that he made the layup, so it would have been an "and-one", giving Baylor a chance to go up five. Instead the next time down I believe Duke hit a three to go up one. A huge swing there, no doubt.

This is really starting to bug me. Narveson gives up one run in five innings, and his manager criticizes him for not hitting the corners like he normally does and because his velocity was down a notch or two. Whereas Suppan gets shelled in a game and gives up four home runs and his manager defends him until he's blue in the face because "only two of them were legit." Sometimes I wonder if Macha thinks before he speaks.

This sensitivity to any form of celebration is becoming absurd, and quite frankly is already absurd, to say the least. The Cardinals crying over the Brewers untucking their jersey's after a win; the Giants holding a grudge over the offseason because the Brewers celebrated a walk off home run on their own home field. It's just ridiculous. If you don't like it, win the game, or don't give up a walk off homerun. -
That's just so weak hitting Fielder. Get over yourselves...for goodness sake.

I know this may be stating the obvious, but I've purchased hats on ebay and amazon in the past. When I bought through amazon, the seller was Star Struck. The direct website for them is www.starstruck.com. However, the prices aren't much different than on mlb.com. So I would just suggest checking out ebay, as you can find cheaper prices for good, quality fitted hats. I haven't had any issues doing it that way. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty much the same as you, TheCrew. I will root for both UW and MU unless they play each other. It seems to me that having two good basketball teams in the state can only be a good thing. I follow the Badgers exponentially more than I do MU, but I have nothing against the Warriors. It's nice to have two teams to root for in the NCAA tournament, because if one team loses, you could have another team still in it.

I guess I don't see where this Fielder-closing-the-door stuff is coming from. At the Fan Fest, Haudricourt wrote an article which states: I take that as Fielder saying, "If I'm happy in Milwaukee, and my family is happy in Milwaukee, I will surely consider staying in Milwaukee."

How idiotic is it to have steel beams exposed like that? I have absolutely no knowledge of Luging (if that's even how you spell it or say it), but did anyone think to put fiberglass up in that area, like that which you see around hockey rinks? At the very worst the lugers would be protected from impacting exposed steel beams at 90 mph, and instead slide on the ice. How horrible and tragic. It seems to me that these Winter Olympics are turning out to be a bit of an embarrassment for Vancouver, and Canada in general when you consider the lack of snow, the malfunction at the Opening Ceremony, and this tragic and perhaps preventable death of a young man. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the Georgian luger.

That was a good article. Thanks for posting that. It's kind of neat to get into the mind of someone like that, whether you agree with his viewpoint or not. I wish I could read more articles like that more often.

Of course I don't want to see those guys take away opportunities from the younger guys. But I will just assume (and perhaps doing so shows my naivety) that management is smart enough to know which guys have the highest potential and smart enough to allow them to show it. And I will just assume that unless the guys on minor league ST invites are lighting it up, they won't take opportunities away from the younger guys with higher upside. Again, I may be showing my naivety; but the way the Trot Nixon situation was handled last year is what leads me to make the assumptions that I do.

I guess when I think of the 07 and 08 Giants, I think of them signing old guys to be the core of their team (I don't know if that is an accurate assessment or not). Of the guys you listed, I don't think the Brewers are counting on any of them to be a core players, with perhaps the exception being Randy Wolf. Off of the top of my head, four of the nine players you mentioned are on minor league contracts with invites to Spring Training (Schoenweiss, Halama, Edmonds & Treanor). Really no harm in that at all. If they do well, great. If they stink, no big loss. Counsell and perhaps Inglett are expected to be bench/role players, not everyday players. Doug Davis is expected to stabilize the what was the worst rotation in baseball last year, not anchor it. The only one who seems to be heavily counted on is Gregg Zaun, and he is a guy who can't possibly be worse than Jason Kendall. And who knows what Salome/LuCroy will show this spring. I see what your saying JBriggs, but I don't think that the Giants situation is an apples to apples comparison. I admittedly don't follow the Giants, but like I said, it seemed to me that they were signing old guys with the idea that they would be main cogs in their lineup/pitching staff, whereas it doesn't seem to be quite that way for the Brewers. EDIT: I see you added Hawkins and Hoffman to your original post. Again, I see what you're saying, but Hawkins has pitched pretty well the last couple of years, and Hoffman is still an effective closer. Neither of those two have shown to be on a major downslide in their careers that we should be that worried about their age.

So according to Baseball Prospectus, the Brewers are projected to give up 77 more runs this year than they did last year (895 projected vs. 818 last year)? That would mean that the pitching staff would have to be even more colossally horrid than it was last year. I, for one, would be stunned if that happened.

If it's a minor league deal, what's the harm? If he performs well, great. If not he can be released with little issue. I guess I don't know that Reed Johnson is to the point where he needs to sign a minor league deal. Gross and Freel may be, but not Johnson. I find this signing somewhat reminiscent of the Trot Nixon signing, but I'd venture to guess Edmonds could have more of an impact.
