  1. Wow, none of those picks were under slot. Almost the same profile as other picks. Bring on the pitchers tomorrow!

  3. Love the Kieschnick comp. with the Brewers so data driven I can never get too low on any pick. DS and company really make me doubt my instincts, which is probably super healthy. I also wonder if they’re lining up a bunch of senior college pitchers at 20,000 each after the draft.
  4. The Brewers announced Zavier Warren as a Catcher. Beautiful, thanks EB!
  5. Unimpressed with this pick, maybe a well below slot pick, looking to make a minor splash in last round? A little disappointed that Warren is listed as 3B. Did the Brewers designate him as 3B? Or is that ESPN based on Cape Cod experience? Eye Black: Thanks for your work today, much appreciated.
  6. Catching has been an area of concentration since Stearns came on board. Given the obvious quality we have in the minors presently this seems like a real trust pick. Really like this pick quite a bit. We’re gonna hit big on one of these guys and the payoff on the major league level will be significant. What do these guys have in common so far? OBP with a solid hit tool and unrealized power. Intriguing.
  7. I wonder if all our picks will be college players with medical concerns.
  8. Heart sunk with Beeter pick by LA. It’s like the bad old days—big teams wrap up the big players. Not sure of the injury history with ACL. If Zamora is below slot I don’t mind the pick. If thinking he might move to 3rd I don’t mind the pick. If he’s there to light a fire under their highest rated minor leaguer, that concerns me.
  9. I’m optimistic about Brewer pitching especially with the starters. The only player that doesn’t apply to is Burnes though. His fastball is straight as Taylor Jungmann and just as hittable if not more so. The double trouble for him is that he has to have the fastball to set up his formidable slider and he’s got to put it in the same plane as the slider, which is low, which means he’s gonna get pounded before he gets to the slider. He’s got to pitch up in the zone with the fastball which takes away from the effectiveness of the slider. Unfortunately for him he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. I’m counting on him like I counted on Jimmy Nelson last year. Hope I’m dead wrong because I can’t get that image of him striking out everyone in existence out of my head. Woodruff is a stud and I think he’ll be even more studdy this year.
  10. I’d guess this issue of player punishment gets resolved in the next CBA negotiations. It doesn’t seem practical now given how complex and drawn out the investigations would be. It’s an easy “give” the players can turnover to MLB in exchange for some monetary advantage.
  11. Still think it’s an overpay. Rather have Lyles and his contract. He’s not Suppan okay, but it’s a Suppanesque kinda deal. We shall see.
  12. Shaw vs. Smoak cage match throw down. True Mano y Mano. We’ll find out who is the better GM. (Secretly I’ve got my money on...)
  13. I hope you’re right TJ. I’ve never enjoyed stealing strikes or strikes off the plate. I know they’ll be plenty of problems with an automated strike zone, but when it’s perfected I think the benefit will be huge.

  15. Good for the White Sox. Like the signing for them, but it’s an over pay.

  17. I wanna believe! I really do, but all my optimism is based on DS being way smarter than my gut which is queasy this off season. Given the size of my gut I’m sure my fears are overblown, out of control, bowling ball-like. See, I really want to believe. But seriously even my gut tells me Urias is gonna be a stud. That Garcia will light up right-centerfield with like 120 doubles next year, that our team obp dramatically rises, that Burnes becomes our number two starter, Hader turns into Gavin Lux et al, Go Brewers Go!
  18. I like Smoak better than Thames but only slightly. If you think about it from Thames p.o.v why would you want to come back to a team that nontendered you to save a couple million bucks? I remain in the uneasy camp, but mainly because of defense. If Arcia is not in the line up you’re essentially fielding a lack of range infield which is going to cost your pitchers. I do like the outfield defense if Garcia plays right. Shifting is also going to be less successful because Arcia guarded some 2nd base and a little 3rd base territory. It’s pretty obvious that the catching defense will decline, maybe significantly. Offensively I do believe in the Miller Park bounce based on Yelich and Grandal, but will it be enough? Don’t know, but I expect some mitigation. I can’t see us signing Donaldson. The Cain contract might be difficult enough for us to handle, but if Donaldson’s contract becomes dead weight as well it could really have ramifications on the player acquisition front.
  19. I like this signing more than the Healy signing. I think he’ll back up at 2b, 3b, and occasionally at short. He’s a fairly good obp guy and might make a decent pinch hitter. I really hope we stay away from Seager. Don’t like the contract or the production. I don’t think we overpaid on Sogard as I find the whole market is overpaying in general. Another consideration (which I’m not really enamored of) is that Sogard holds down 3rd while Healy gets healthy and tuned up in AAA. That’s why I think that Stearns will be more likely to trade or sign a first baseman. I must admit I’m in the uneasy camp as of now, but I trust DS so much that the dam is holding. On trading Arcia—I’d rather obtain a AAA or AA guy who has a decent shot but is blocked at the big league level by some older established guy who’s on the downside. No way I’m trading Huira.
  20. I don’t think Stearns is under any delusion here: Rodriguez, Healy, Petersen, et al. These are just bodies. It’s spring training competition. Maybe one of these guys make it. I gotta believe the best is yet to come. Trade? FA signing? Come on DS, it’s Christmas time.
  21. I’m glad Wade got paid. I think just like last year the Reds are overplaying their hand.
  22. I do believe that restricting strategy eventually will hurt competition, especially for smaller market team who often have to think outside the box. I also like the expanded rosters. I like to go to late season games especially to get a look at the young guys or the successful AAA guys. I think the commissioner’s main job should be tailoring the rules to increase competition not to ensure its commercialization. It my interpretation that the new rules will stymie competition.
  23. I don’t understand why Peralta is getting the start? He simply doesn’t deserve it. Put him with the Missions and tell him “you’re up again when you can be consistent with the curve and throw lefties a change up.” He’s obviously the future, but that future is down the line.
  24. I have a tendency to agree with those who preach patience with Huira. For my part I think he looks the real deal—balanced, restrained swing that spends more time than average in the zone. He’s got gap power and there’s a stillness in the box that bespeaks a calm, intelligent approach. I think all the signs are hopeful but I just can’t believe in “slam dunks.” So many have failed.
  25. So starts the merry-go-round. Hopefully it’s done as expertly as last year.
