  1. There was a typo on my part I meant to say "if you look at his numbers in the minors." That is about 8 seasons worth of data so it is a little more data. When I look at his numbers in the minors and his year outside 2007, I see someone who seems like he will consistently be around 35-40 home runs. It is not meant to bad mouth Prince, and you are right he could hit 50 again, and Braun could do it too, i just dont think it is likely.
  2. How dpes Handicourt justify Delgado ahead of Pujols, if his logic is that Albert's team did not make the playoffs? It just does not make sense to me. He also had Aramis Ramirez ahead of Braun which does not seem right to me. Braun also received a $50,000 bonus for his finish according to espn
  3. You realize that Braun had 37 home runs this year, even after hurting his rib cage down the stretch. His power went way down after the injury or else he would have easily hit 40. Two of his three lowest home run outputs per month were the last two months. Braun had a better OPS than Prince last year, even with his injury. I do not see any reason to think Braun will slug .550. In fact, I think he will learn to become a more patient hitter, as he did the second half of last year when his OBP was .350. In my mind there is no reason to think Prince will hit more than 50 again, especially if you look at his numbers in the minors (editted). He has never had a season close to what he did in 2007 so I think he is a guy who will be around 35-40 home runs which is where Braun will be as well. I do not think that either of them will hit their numbers from 2007 again, but I think Braun has a better chance just because he will age better and have more years at a peak level of production to match it.
  4. Hoffman had a better K/9 rate than any year since 2002 so I do not think he has lost effectiveness with his change. Actually if the speed differential between your fastball and change stay the same your change up can be a really effective pitch. Hoffman was very effective last year as a closer, especially compared to the guys we threw out there this year.
  5. I agree I am not a Ryan fan, although last night was one of his best episode in some ways. Give me more Creed, Kevin, and the rest instead of more Ryan.
  6. What about a team like the Angels? If the Red Sox get Tex, and the Dodgers keep Ramirez, they could be a real possibility. They also match up with us extremely well. They have a bunch of pitching and some good young players. They are a contender who may feel like they need to make a move on an offense that is growing older.
  7. Escobar was the 5th ranked prospect in the completely stacked Southern League. He was behind Price, Kershaw, Maybin, and LaPorta. It is not just the Power 50 who think he is very good in also places like Baseball America. If those rankings hold he will definitely be a top 50 prospect in all the minors. He is a terrific fielder who is growing as a hitter. He developed a little power this year, but does need to learn how to walk. I am not quite sure why he is a backup in your mind. I could see him as an average SS but not a complete miss
  8. Thanks for the heads up. I did not know if he would cost picks but like you said I dont know how much that changes things since we need a better closer than our in house options in my mind.
  9. I don't know how much better Marmol will be than Wood it will probably be a near wash as Wood had a nice year. I don't think Gregg will be anywhere near as good or versatile as Marmol. In my mind Marmol loses some value because he will go from pitching 87 innings (most of any reliever that I could see) to likely at most around 72 (which was the highest of any full time closer this year). That is around 15 less innings which is quite a bit of difference. It could be okay for him though because he seemed to wear down in June and July from overuse.
  10. Hoffman won't cost us a first round pick like Wood either, would he? I know Wood is a type A free agent but I don't think Hoffman would cost anything so I think he is the best option. I think other teams will look at K-Rod, Fuentes, and Wood as long-term closers so the Brewers could snag Hoffman.
  11. I dont see Swisher being their CF so I think Cameron to NY is still an option. Swisher can play a corner OF spot or 1B if they do not get Tex
  12. Yes he is from what I can gather
  13. I heard that too, but I am not sure. I think the fact that his numbers dropped around when LaPorta left will sour him in the eyes of people who rank guys in the minors. Now, rankings don't matter but whether it was the loss of LaPorta, an injury, or a combination of both is what leaves Gamel as a little of a question mark.
  14. Gregg and Marmol is not better than Marmol and Wood. That is a step down for the Cubs in mind. That is good for us because it puts another closer in the market which means we have a good chance to get someone decent.
  15. Gregg lead the league in blown saves last year. He blew 9 saves in just 38 opportunities, and he is not a great strikeout guy and he a guy every two innings. I don't think he is a great pick up at all especially for what they gave up to get him.
  16. I find it interesting that Hardy was ranked so high when his numbers were not that spectacular in the minors. Escobar is one year behind what Hardy was and his numbers stack up nicely. Both were/are considered very good defenders but Escobar is supposed to be a little better, so I think he compares well with Hardy. Gamel has hit everywhere he has been and is still just 22. His career OPS in the minors is .865, but he does pale in comparison to the number that Weeks and Prince put up. Jeffress has to have the most upside of anyone in the system, just not the overall numbers to match it.
  17. Sheets has started more games and pitched more innings than A.J. Burnett in his career and Burnett pitched 20 games before Sheets got into the league. I think whoever signs Burnett is just as likely to get burned as the team who signs Sheets and Sheets will cost less and demand less years. He is the guy to go after if CC does not sign here which seems to be the case.
  18. Oddly enough with LaPorta I would have felt really good about this wave of talent. That as it is Gamel, Escobar, Jeffress, and Salome is a nice top end. It is not dynamic but had Gamel not struggle down the stretch he would have been ranked fairly high to start the year. Escobar gets a lot of love from scouts and the Brewers brass. Jeffress could be a top end guy. Salome is a question mark in my mind, I actually like Lucroy more than him. I would put Lucroy, Green, Cain, and Aguilar as a second level of talent that could be really good as well. Obviously, the big question mark for me is starting arms. However, we could be talking about this as a future strong suit after this year. With Jeffress and Periard as the top guys who will still be in the minors all next year, if the young guys improve and if Braddock can get heathly then we could have a nice group of starters. You have Odorizzi, Lintz, Scarpetta, Anundson, Fredrickson, Nieves, Seidel, and Peralta. You would think some of the guys could break out. Odorizzi and Scarpetta seem the most likely to get us excited because they have great stuff and pretty pretty well this year. Lintz, Fredrickson, Nieves and Peralta are interesting guys. Anundson and Seidel are getting to the levels where you start to see what they are made of. I feel there is a good chance by the end of next year we are excited about our starting pitching in the minors. I am also concerned about the bats in the wave after Lucroy, Green and Cain, but I don't know a ton about guys outside of Gindl, Komatsu, Lawrie, and Dykstra.
  19. I agree with a lot of what you said but this is a fear of mine as well. We could trade them Prince just so we get their number one. A late first round pick and a sandwich pick would go a long way in replacing the guys from the trade. We would pick back to back in the first round. It is too bad the Rangers are a leader for Sheets because we would get their second I think. 3 late first round picks would be great. That said I think the Angels will pony up a bunch of cash for Teixeira to keep him around. I really fear McClung being our opening day closer as well.
  20. This would mean we did absolutely nothing in the off-season that would be a big fear. I agree with the idea of Hall starting at 3B being my biggest fear.
  21. Hoffman had a really nice K/9 and BB/9 last year as opposed to Torres who put up poor numbers for both. That would change some of the numbers. If McClung can focus on being a reliever I think he could have a high K/9 rate although he BB/9 would be higher. Stetter has shown ability to make lefties look foolish and strike out and will get a lot more K's than Shouse. Stetter has just two less K's in half the innings. A guy like Aguilar could be a good strikeout guy and Villy became a better than K per inning when he became a realiever.Hoffman, Villy, McClung, and Stetter would all help in increasing K/9, BB/9 and WHIP. Riske has never been a big strikeout guy so he wont help. But with Hoffman our numbers would get much better in those categories you looked at.
  22. I agree that with Hoffman the bullpen would be almost set. Closer - Hoffman 8th - Villanueva or McClung (although Seth is in the rotation right now) 7th - Riske, Stetter Loogy - Shouse and Stetter but I think Stetter deserves the shot to be more than just a loogy. Obviously there are a couple more openings maybe for a guy like Coffey, or Aguilar who has been great in the AFL. That really would be a decent bullpen and could use another arm but it would allow us to focus on the other areas that really need work like 3B and SP.
  23. The MVP is not determined in one month. Prince had a great September but without CC it would not have mattered. His best month was well below Braun's best two months. Using the argument that Prince had a good September so he was the team's MVP puts way too much stock in one month it also does not take into account the great months Braun, Hardy and Cameron had before that to keep the team in contention when Prince was not doing much. It does not take into account how Sheets kept the rotation together until CC got there. You said when CC showed up Ben bailed but the reality is when Braun was showing up Prince really was not and vice-versa. We do not the playoffs without any of those guys. If you look at from strictly OPS Braun was the 4th best among NL OF. Fielder was 4th best among NL 1B. They ending with overall pretty similar years, although Braun would have easily jumped higher had he not had the rib injury.
  24. This is the opinion I just do not understand. What are the similarities between Gagne and Hoffman? Gagne collapsed down the stretch before the Brewers signed him and Hoffman was solid all last year and has been for the past decade. I am just wondering what the reason behind the comparisons are.
  25. Not saying I agree that his defense negates most of his offense but it definitely negates some. You used Princes fielding percentage to show that he does not make errors that often but his numbers are padded because he get credit for every throw he catches. He was tied for last in MLB for fielding percentage among first baseman. That does not even factor in how many throws he does not dig and balls he does not get to. He is second to last in Zone Rating for 1B, so he is a bad fielder. That being said it does not in my mind negate a ton of his value but it keeps him from being at the same level as other elite 1B like Tex, Pujols, and Berkman. His fielding problems are a reason to not lock him up long term and to look into his trade value because he is only going to get worse as a fielder in my opinion.
