Yeah, lost in the two big hits was Manny's quality start. Unfortunately, while he was on the mound his efforts were kind of overshadowed by the no-hit bid by Lannen (though Manny's pitch count and balls/strikes were better). I remember thinking during the 11th or 12th inning, "oh yeah, the first half of this game was a no-hitter and good start for Manny."

Nice work, Brian. Now Garrett has all the motivation he needs.

Well, it was fun by the time the 8th ended. After Mike's hit, I found myself just assuming the game would be won; it was just a matter of waiting out the Nats. Fortunately, that worked out.

When Hotel California was released, the lyrics seriously scared me. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave!" = nightmarish prospect for 10-year-old girl. I still change the station whenever it comes on the radio.

It almost seemed normal, didn't it? I've always tolerated (at best) and often disliked the increasing advertising/sponsorship presence at Miller Park. Those of you who have been to a game in the last month or so and have seen the Brewers' starting lineup announcement turn into a huge commercial for Motorola phones...might know what I mean. Tonight, though, it occurred to me that if enough advertising and sponsorship could get the Brewers more time with CC, I'd do it in a heartbeat. And I hope J.J.'s catch late in the game made web gems, though I can't stay up anymore to find out for myself.

Three years ago, some friends asked for our help with moving. They were being evicted and at first we had reason to assume that it was for nonpayment of rent. Once we got there, we began to wonder if the eviction wasn't for the fully unholy stench coming out of the apartment. They had to have given up on litter box management for their cats at some point. Cat pee + cigarette smoke (and maybe other contributing sources; the first two were overwhelming and bad enough). Compounding this experience was that they hadn't finished packing yet, so they were discussing/arguing over how to finish the packing while the S.O. and I were standing there trying not to gag. I offered to clear out the storage cubicle, specifically because it was away from the smell. It was a miserable day on multiple levels. I had a sore throat and whacked out sinuses for a couple of days afterward. That night, the S.O. woke me up and said, " I dreamed that the smell was back." We still shudder when we go by that apartment complex; and I'm sorry to say that our friendship with these people was largely shot after that experience. The dead things mentioned earlier in this thread probably trump everyone else's smelliest smells, but that is my worst experience to date.

I'm going to give some love to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Cities that I've particularly enjoyed include Seattle and Pittsburgh.

I just realized that we've been to only one game since the all-star break (our last two were July 27 and July 13). I'm surprised I haven't gone through withdrawal, and now I'm extra eager to get to the park on Friday. Is Ryan destined to have a super night, on 08-08-08?

Disclaimer: I'm about as uninterested in the Packers and football as is possible for a native Wisconsinite to be. I do have moderator status at lambeauleap but rarely visit. My take on the posts that concern you is that they're more a pre-emptive move than a blatant shill or flaunting of rules. We have a better chance of keeping football discussion off Brewerfan by making the link/lock post before any other member starts a thread (which is inevitably followed by some discussion plus some IBTL posts) until a moderator sees it, locks and links. To me, it seems more like a time-saver than anything else.

Speaking as a fan first (of the Brewers and of Brewerfan) - and as a staff member second - I'm glad to see this much interest shown in the site quality. This comment echoes one of my concerns from the last year-plus. Some posters (a minority, I'd like to think, but certainly a vocal minority) seem to make an awful lot of posts whose most proper home is probably the vent thread. I'm well aware of the emotional toll that 25+ years of waiting can take on a fanbase, and I'm (achingly) well aware of the emotional roller coaster the Brewers have taken us on since the start of the 2007 season. I'm also not saying that this forum should only be for heaping praise on the Brewers. But I think posts that refer to Brewers players or staff as "garbage," "moronic," "you idiot" and the like have no place on a forum called Brewerfan. Comments like that are anything but constructive, and make the forum less enjoyable to read. It's frankly a letdown to attend a Brewers game - even a win - and come home to read a game thread that is full of picky gripes about how Ned was dumb or Suppan really sucked or Rickie will never amount to anything. There are ways to show disapproval or disagreement without being insulting or just splattering your thoughts on a screen. For a while last season, it felt to me as if the forum membership was divided, sometimes sharply, between people who assumed the Brewers were doomed (in some cases months, literally, before they actually fell out of first place) and people who didn't. Why did that happen? Why do I half expect it to happen again this year? With a few exceptions, we're all here because we like the Brewers. We're on the same side! I don't know how to resolve this, and I can assure you that staff and moderators have gone over this issue amongst ourselves more than once. Wallus' suggestion is one we have pondered (among other ideas). A big change we implemented during the 07-08 offseason was to request more of a statement from people applying for membership. This was after we noticed a correlation between posters with a membership statement such as "can I post or what?" or "give TurnBLOW a one way ticket outta town!" and members who flamed out quickly, sometimes from the very first post. Our goal is not for this screening to be elitist, though we know some would-be applicants (and maybe some of you already here) perceive it in that very way. I think our forum occupies a very particular niche, which is not a good match for everyone - for example, your Brewers love may be pure and deep, but if you can't post without cussing or insults, Brewerfan is not the place for you - and when we steer unlikely matches away, we do so as much for those applicants as for the existing membership. As Brian said earlier, we have worked harder to make site expectations known to all, but for the most part the success of the forum lies in the effort of each member.
