  1. When was he a pretty good starter for the Marlins? His FIPs as a starter before this season: 5.86, 5.29, 4.35, 4.45, 4.72, 5.10.
  2. Yeah talk about completely different levels there. JJ Hardy would require a huge package while Wilson and Greene would require Baltimore to have a roster spot open.
  3. Yep Dempster stopped walking people. Not something I'd bet highly on continuing.
  4. The only reason I could see someone upset with this is if they think that due to the relatively high number of 1B/DH/LF types on the market there might be a chance to move Braun or Hart to CF and bring one in at below market value. Some player heavily undervalued over his career like Dunn, Burrell, or even get Giles via trade. I can understand that I just think there is no way could the team make up for the defensive hit.
  5. Actually until before this year Bush did certainly strike out enough guys. In 2006 his K/9 was 7.11 and in 2007 it was 6.47. Now that isn't overwhelming, but certainly very good given Bush walks almost nobody.
  6. If he retires he doesn't get paid
  7. I'm sorry I was curt, but I'm tired of Gwynn being made to be something he isn't. He isn't a contact hitter, he isn't a great base stealer and from reports he isn't much more than above average defender. Keep in mind Weeks and Gwynn are the same age (Weeks is 1 month older) so there isn't any reason to expect him to get tons better. Does he strike out less than the other, yes, but that's mostly because he walks less. When people talk contact hitter, they think Kendall in his prime and he would K at a rate about half of Gwynn's.
  8. Thats nice except for the fact that Gwynn isn't a contact hitter. Not only doesn't he hit for power he strikes out a whole lot. Give him 600 PAs and he'll have 90-100Ks.
  9. Given Counsell can still play SS he likely would have a 1 year 750K-1.25m contract somewhere if he wants it (even Milwaukee)
  10. No its less per year, Santana had less bargaining power being under contract already and its a year later.
  11. Lowell has a full no trade clause. Not really sure how Boston hopes to move him.
  12. Willis couldn't get out AAA hitters. He's likely done as a starter.
  13. Trading Fielder for Hughes and Cano would be the opposite of buying low. And Cano was a worse defender than Weeks last season. Add into that the fact Cano is owed $6, $9 and $10m plus a $2m buyout going forward. Cano's great season was entirely BABIP driven (.363). He was good in 2007 but again had a high BABIP (.331).
  14. Yes TH could be wrong, but vs a nationally unsourced piece he carries much greater weight. And yes you can negotiate but starting at 75-80% of the expected contract leaves a huge amount for the Brewers to come up. with TH saying the Brewers won't go up much more.
  15. How's that trade of Suppan after two years working out?
  16. Suppan's career FIP 4.79 Garland's career FIP 4.74 Now Garland was a decent pitcher from 2005-2007 but was pretty bad last season (4.76 FIP) so he very well could be past his prime.
  17. This just more proof that coaching in professional baseball really doesn't exist. You'd think sooner or later people would realize that teaching is a good thing and that having played in the majors isn't a huge sign you can coach. The NFL has realized this.
  18. Well so much for a "competitive" offer.
  19. You're right the jury isn't out, its a good pick by any account.
  20. Did you see what Weeks did to AAA pitching? The fact you think a young player who has been slightly below average in his career should never have made the big leagues means your basis of comparison is way off.
  21. So except for when Sheets was good he stunk?
  22. Lowell has full no trade protection so its far from a sure thing he's out of Boston
  23. Ibanez only makes sense if Hart is traded moving Braun to right (and even there its iffy) or as a replacement for Fielder if he's traded. But $12m for 3 years and a 1st round pick is a high cost for a guy who has a good chance of dropping off a cliff.
