  1. I'd much rather take a flier on super athletic types after the first round, so I'm happy with the Harrison pick.
  2. I rather liked the note that Zarraga had been getting some starts at first base. I don't know how exactly to project him at this point, but if he hits even close to .300 with the gap power and solid eye he's as attractive as any other cheap option that's been tossed around.
  3. Certainly bad luck on a variety of fronts, but also very significantly the gravy train of talent they had built up as a result of so many high draft picks and some savvy trades ran out. There is so much variance in the drafting a development process, we over attribute that variance to skill.
  4. I hate to say this, perhaps someone else has commented on this already, but don't seniors potentially have a ton of leverage if they wait until the signing deadline? The team's do need that pool space afterall, so it seems like only a matter of time until they engage in a little negotiations chicken for every last ounce of the signing pool they can get.
  5. I'd guess Coulter stays in low A to work on D as well. Hobbs doesn't jump out as a guy who screams midseason promotion. Cravy certainly, and maybe a few other pitchers in response.
  6. Hard to say who or how many of those guys in the later rounds sign, but if we have as much success with this crop of late rounders as the last couple of drafts we'd be in pretty good shape.
  7. Just to clarify I don't think it is likely that any of this years draftees leapfrog any of Coulter, Taylor, or Arcia. No one really thought Taylor would do what he did 2 years ago in the Pioneer League either and it really changed his prospect status. So I am willing to entertain the idea that they could make an interesting conversation by the end of the year. Gatewood in particular with a great season would have a pretty interesting argument vs. Arcia depending on how his season goes. Basically at what point on production would Gatewood's offensive potential overcome the level difference? I do have a hard time seeing anybody overtake Coulter or Taylor. Sure Coulter has defensive questions, but it's not 1997 anymore and legitimate .900+ OPS bats don't grow on trees regardless of position. With Taylor already playing well at a premium defensive position and showing the solid all around bat with more room to grow, that's just a lot of overcome in a short season of Pioneer ball. Maybe Mediros could if he dominated that league (Lefty with stuff dominates college hitters in a hitters league...). It has definitely been a long time since the minors were this much fun.
  8. As much as anything else the improvement is a direct result of having almost no one ready to graduate this year outside of Nelson. Last year represented a nadir because of the combination of so many guys who hadn't had much of a chance to perform from the last 2 drafts and the almost complete clearing out of the top 2 levels last year with all the injuries to the team.
  9. There are a lot of halfway decent options. Ideally this is what you'd like to have for a truly good bullpen the ability to shuffle guys around when they inevitably struggle, but not acting like you are giving guys a quick hook. I think on an innings basis Thornburg's struggles are all of 2 starts in length. Still In addition to moving Estrada to the pen and calling up Nelson, they could just call up Fiers, Jeffress, or Mills. I kind of like giving Mills a shot, since it lets the team hold onto that depth, and if he looks good while he's up it gives his value a healthy bump, and if he struggles you just kind of move on and have lost relatively little.
  10. By the end of the season it might be possible for some of the top 3 picks to leap frog Coulter, Taylor, and Arcia but certainly not now. All 3 of them have substantial projection and are already producing in A ball. You need to see those tools show-up in the minors first before they can jump over players who have both tools and production. That said if Gatewood stays healthy and hits like crazy in the Pioneer league answering some of the questions about him in the process he could move past Arcia, and maybe even the other 2.
  11. Nelson might very well have an adjustment period, but his current AAA performance is more than just him settling in like he did at other levels, his control and K rates are the best of his career. I'm not in favor of a rash promotion, but it is getting to the point that you look at improving the rotation from within.
  12. Slightly a dead horse, but I'm sure it would be trivial to find prior Law comments being critical of the Brewers taking 'safe' guys in the draft so for him to be critical know of risky picks is just whatever axe he has to grind with the Brewers. It's not like Melvin and Ashe have outperformed him when given the chance to run a team... Oh wait.
  13. Arcia stays white hot 4-4 with a double and a walk. OPS up to .724 with the OBP close to .350.
  14. Way too much certainty in an uncertain process for some of the statements on the board tonight. Given the observed, documented, stone cold, every single year variation in scouting opinions on players past the top couple there is relatively little meaning in saying a 'top 27' player.
  15. Rather than discussing the performance the more relevant answer to the question is that there is no way barring something wacky (like taking a guy he obviously couldn't sign) that his draft picks this year would cost him his job. The performance of the guys down on the farm is going to contribute far more to his evaluation than anything we'd learn about this year's draft in the next couple of months (again barring something really extraordinary).
  16. I do think a trade would be unusual, but the signs are pointing to the fact that it could upgrade the quality of the rotation, and hopefully help out the offense a little as well. Crossing over it is a lot easier to imagine Estrada getting dealt than Gallardo. Gallardo has been a key figure for too long for him to be dealt even if it might save more money and bring a slightly better player.
  17. Huge night for Arcia 4-5 with a double and his first HR, pushes his OPS over .700 for the season. If he stays anywhere as close to as hot as he has been the last 2 weeks he might start pushing his way into a debate over the top 4 prospects.
  18. I'd definitely argue for expanding the vote to 25 or 30, which would probably get us close to the old Power 50 and probably give us a better ranking in the 15-30 range. The guys who make it or don't in that range tended to be based on making it on to a few ballots with a larger ballot most of them would make it somewhere on a persons list.
  19. I'm wondering give the lack of options that are actually measurably out performing what we have (or could have with giving Morris a shot) if it might be worth entertaining trying to shoot for bigger game. Would Arizona consider Goldschmidt on a retooling deal with pitching? I get the cost is higher, but it is the best target for making the team better and avoiding a slump to cost a playoff spot.
  20. I wonder if someone would be willing to swap competitive balance picks for Mills?
  21. Where do you put Aramis when he comes back? Davis is out hitting him so far this year by a good margin?
  22. I'm rather impressed at how well the Indians nailed that trade-off. It was far from clear at the time that Brantley would be the better player.
  23. Too bad Wang is probably too tired to go three days in a row.
