  1. It's almost impossible to be in the top 5 for more than 2 years in a row on a prospect list. If you have enough really good prospects to rate that highly within those two years either they have lost their prospect status due to catastrophic injury, are playing in the majors, or have been traded for other major leaguers. The odds of being able to produce what would have to amount to two huge waves of prospects back to back is nigh impossible without perhaps the benefit of many compensation picks. The best farm teams long term like the Angels, Dodgers, and Twins will have years when they get a big group of really good prospects together, and other years they will be floating around the top 10 or so when they don't have quite so many potential all-stars but still have a lot of solid prospects. Arguably the Brewers could be classified in that group of generally good farm systems as well.
  2. Well I think his agent probably got caught up in the early offseason hysteria, and forgot one of the long standing trends in free agency. For non elite players the guy who signs first usually signs for the most. When your down to only one team bidding on you and your probably there second or third choice they don't open the wallet so much and it's not like you have a lot of options. So the trick is to be the guy that signs early while many teams have money to spend.
  3. Getting Penny for Jenkins and a part would be huge. Would definitely fill the trade of Davis even if Doug returned to form. Jenkins only having 1 year left on his contract maybe attractive to LA with next year supposedly beign a better FA class they might be looking for a nice short term solution, instead of fighting for table scraps.
  4. But if you play video games with family and friends your just not going to be the proper homicidal anti-social geek you should be http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. I'd be intrigued by combining signing Craig Wilson with trading Mench and Gwynn for Lopez and Patterson. A primary OF solid on Offense high on Defense with Hart, Patterson, and Jenkins, platoon out for Clark and Wilson against lefties. Gross is technically a 4th OF and Wilson an IF/OF Remaining players provides a lot of offense of the bench: Hall, Hardy, Weeks, Fielder, Cirillo, Koskie, Estrada, and Miller
  6. I wouldn't say that we have no confidence in Carlos, instead there is little reason to believe he'll ever be anything special. Of course being able to just find a league average starter out of the minors is a huge boon as an organization. By the same token if Carlos starts to struggle or people get a little scouting report on him it's easy to imagine him looking very unimpressive very fast.
  7. My guess is that in the current environment someone will write him an oversized check for one year gambling that he'll be healthy and can be a force. I could find a way to drop 6 million or so on him if I was Cashman.
  8. We do have that Brady Clark fellow. Brady's not a great player, and he had a down year, but he does everything a lot of these other players don't. Patterson's defense last year by most metrics was excellent. Against Righties he posted an .826 OPS with excellent SB numbers looks pretty interesting out of the 7 spot. Clark gives you the patience against lefties.
  9. Well on the other side Koskie was an awesome defender too, though the health issue is relevant there. The nubers also support that Weeks mad a pretty substantial improvement in his defense after the first couple of months. just because the team was so bad last year I think they are going to be quite a bit better this year, and it might even be the biggest difference in perfromance.
  10. Just wanted to elaborate a little bit on the idea. Putz isn't the end all be all to a deal, but the larger point is that this deal should include some other piece, as to a large extent trading for Beltre is just shuffling chairs around we need something else for a deal to make sense. Personally, I like how this deal arranges the team. Beltre, Hall, Week, Fielder on the infield. Hardy can try and get reps in at AAA if that's what he needs. OF putting Braun in LF, Giving a straight platoon in CF to Gross and Clark gives us above average offense out of that position, and Hart in RF. Gwynn or Krynzel can then serve a useful purpose as a 5th OF for defense on this team. Mench can be dealt or let go as not needed.
  11. I was rather skeptical of the notion at first, but under the right parameters there is some merit. As others have mentioned OPS wise Safeco really hurts his numbers, and Dodger stadium didn't do a lot either. Second point he's only 27. And last I knew he was a plus defender. Koskie plus Jenkins gets salaries close. I think we'd be better off trying to maybe throw in a swap of closer Turnbow for Putz in as well and to help compensate for the talent gap on our end then we are really getting a benefit from the trade
  12. I have to disagree with the your feelings tooLiveBrew. The lesson of the Tigers has to be show me the money. We have the ability to show someone the money, and more importantly it's the right time to make that type of move to change this from a team that's right around .500 to one that's a winner. It's hard for me to believe that players would not think the Brewers 07 looks more promising then the 03 Tigers when being willing to play for the team.
  13. I'm a little disappointed about Schmidt, but I think long term we're better off finding a bigtime bat over the next couple of years, and going with the starters we have.
  14. Not that I think the team needed anymore vindication of it's strategic change to shut down the Domican Academy a few years ago and focus on singing fewer higher quality prospects, but the team has rather consistently put it's money where the mouth was at the time of that particular announcement.
  15. I wouldn't be terribly keen on that trade for one reason, getting Arod is a win now type move and Hall is a win now player. We improve as a team, but become less flexible. I'd prefer to deal some prospects maybe a 3 teamer.
  16. That's probably a better way to look at the talent in the league Socal. Doing the math in a 16 team league 30 prospects deep each team should have 2 prospects and we have 4
  17. BA must be pleased and vindicated by Mark Rogers winning this award http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. Clancy I can appreciate a certain perspective on what you wrote, but why would you just write oof Koskie and release him? He was one the few guys we had who played outstanding defense and he hit very well when he was out there? I'm not counting on him for next year, but he was an asset for the team in everyway at the least someone should be willing to trade for him with a clean bill of health.
  19. Ouch what happened to Dana tonight?

  21. I just won't to go on record saying that I have absolutely no problem graduating 3 + good prospects a year and having just as many good replacement. I have a feeling that there may be some serious controversy in the Hot Stove league this fall. I've got a hunch we will see some real good prospects leave (the stagnated Krynzel does not qualify at this point) via trade.
  22. How convienent that the Nashville game story posted Dennis' releif stats. An excellent start for him in that role. Another note I did some projections in terms of contact rate for some players a few weeks ago, and Gamel was a guy who contact rate could use some improvement. Well in addition to his walk binge, he'd now finish at 107 Ks in 700 ABs, which for a bigtime power player is pretty good. I have a sense that he's taken a step forward in his development.
  23. I don't have the numbers, but it does seem that Dennis has had only one bad outing since converting. I'm definitely excited to see if he can do some nice things in Sept.
  24. Braun has certainly been a huge boost to Huntsville, but how about Crabbe going on an on base tear the last couple of weeks.
  25. Speaking of walks has anyone noticed Mat Gamel's binge the last 3 days. He has accumulated 20% of his walks for this season with 2 Three walk days and a two walk day today. Is this a new found willingness to take those walks rather then try and over swing, or has he been getting some kind of near Bonds like treatment?
