  1. $2k on a laptop? Why would you ever spend that much? If you are going to drop that much you can pick up a netbook AND a desktop that will destroy the laptop for ~$500 less then that.
  2. I'm laughing at the 8 pairs of socks you have stuffed into your crotch. Genius! This one would practically be cheating to use against someone. " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355" allowScriptAccess="never" >">
  3. This clip of FTJ working it would be great. Too bad video isn't part of this whole experiment. ? " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355" allowScriptAccess="never" >">
  4. Have you had a chance to see The Proposition, Brad? If not you should check it out. Great movie, and Hillcoat shows that he can do subtle quite well. He's a great choice as director.
  5. For Vince Carter would that second thing be pouting?
  6. Drat! I still had several choice volleys left in me. Like this one. " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355" allowScriptAccess="never" >">
  7. I seem to have touched a nerve. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Correct me if I am wrong, but was the original Land of the Lost high brow material? I'd rather see something like Prisoner of Azkaban, a film which drastically differs from the book but also exceeds it as well, then a tired and lifeless adaptation that follows a paint by numbers approach. The film amps up the violence and tones down the sexuality in every instance, transforming the film into an almost outright mockery of the themes that were presented in the comic. Dumbing down a property isn't ambitious, and I'm sticking to that defense. Oh and challenging me on naming big budget fare that will appeal to high brow audiences? Low blow Robert! Coraline 9 Where the Wild Things Are The Road Observe and Report The Wolf Man Year One Public Enemies Tyrannosaurus Rex Cabin in the Woods The Fantastic Mr Fox The Limits of Control My money is on Observe and Report absolutely blowing Watchmen out of the water, R-rated, incredibly darkand oddly highbrow fare that covers similar themes. From a director far more talented then Zach Snyder. Now if you excuse me I am going to go watch The Incredibles, a far better adaptation of Watchmen. Your serve Robert. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. I once went to a bar in Brainerd and set "Radar Love" on the jukebox to play 4 times in a row. Only the bartender noticed. It was awesome. But if you really want to drive them nuts you gotta go Lesley Gore. Trust me on this.
  9. I have a hard time calling the film ambitious. The source material certainly is, but when the film has to cut out so much of it for the sake of running time and to jazz up the film for general audiences, that just doesn't fall under my definition of ambition. More like necessity, maybe?
  10. You should just buy your own router. You can find one for less and install it yourself fairly easily.
  11. Yeah, the netbok shouldn't be your primary comp. Most of my writing is done on my desktop, but the ultra portability of the netbook is what I love about it. Easy to use, can connect to any WiFi like it is breathing and just solid streamlined machines.
  12. I see those things everywhere and I always thought they looked terrible. I might have to try out the mini golf now.
  13. These are pretty standard features for most netbooks. At home I typically setup my Eee to run off my HDTV and that takes just a few seconds to setup.
  14. I'm telling ya, go netbook. $300 and under price tag, easy to transport, growing cool/hip factor. For mobile computing I can't think of anything I would rather have.
  15. I haven't played 2008 yet but I know the original version was based almost entirely on luck when it came to getting promoted. You really had to have some big games, and a lot of it was simply getting good cards going into the game.
  16. Hmm...love between a father and son and the good of humanity? That's easy.
  17. How old is the player? Are the DVD's scratched or dirty?
  18. What exactly do you mean by sticking? Is it pixilating, or just the frame is freezing?
  19. Its pretty common behavior. There is an infamous David O Russell clip on youtube showing him rampaging on set as he blows up at Lily Tomlin as Dustin Hoffman and Jason Schwartzman just move out of his way. Spielburg is known to have a temper as are numerous other directors and actors. When you have enormously high budget productions on tight budgets and tight production schedules tensions can rise rather quickly and blowups happen. Most people simply work through it because they know it is part of the job. The clip also doesn't say much about McG who utterly lost control of his set. He should have stepped in and had Bale take a moment and then talked with his DP. Instead he let Bale have his meltdown and shirked blame when Bale confronted him during his outburst.
  20. That's Bale's actual accent. Not to dismiss that Bale over reacted, but if your DP is setting up equipment during a take and walking in and out of shots he is borderline incompetent. Toss in a hugely expensive production and a method actor and you're bound to have a blowup.
  21. I think this is a pretty fair critique of the films. And I still think they can fall back on this on occassion. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I get the impression from most people that the reason they think those films were so shallow was because the source material was. That the movie didn't dumb down the comic, but the comic dumbed down the movie if you will. I'm just wondering if people have that general impression of comics? Because if they do then comics really have to work on changing public perception.
  22. Since my last post Netflix has gone full HD streaming for Roku players and the 360. BTW paul, where do you live? I'm guessing no where near a distribution center since you have such a long wait. Also, my guess is that with the recent economic downturn Netflix has seen a big rise in new accounts due to the low cost fixed cost of the service, with that you'll have a lot more people vying for the same amount of films, the vast majority of whom will be trying to get new releases just as you are. If the increase in subscribers holds for a few more months I'm sure they will increase buys on new releases to accommodate. Also, their shipping centers are closed on weekends so you should try and adjust your shipping out dates accordingly. If it typically takes them 3 days to recieve the film then get them in the mail on Tuesday so you will get them that weekend. Any particular reason why you don't stagger your shipping of the films? Shipping them all out in one bundle then waiting 4 days seems like a frustrating way to go about using the service.
  23. Well I did say childish, not mindless. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I was more following up Ben and wasn't meant as a direct criticism. Though I will admit plenty of it is my own built in knee jerk reaction from having to defend my reading comics for over 20 years. Old habits die hard so don't take it too personally, it wasn't meant to be. But I think you might be missing that both of those quotes imply that a comic book film or a super hero film simply can't be a serious crime drama, though that might not have been your intention in the statement. they took a super hero, a comic book, and turned it into a gritty, powerful, and completely engrossing crime thriller. This statement just makes me scratch my head. Batman is a detective comic, has been since it was created. And it has been a consistently gritty comic for over twenty years now. Did the Schumacher films and the TV show really convince people Batman was only a campy joke? Reading some of this thread, I feel like I'm being told I can't appreciate comic movies the way readers of the graphic novels and comics (of which I read plenty) do. I certainly don't think that. But I do think it sounds like people are justifying their liking a "comic book movie" by claiming it doesn't feel like a "comic book movie". The phrase "comic book movie" just seems to imply a vague, and possibly negative, connotation. American Splendor is a pretty accurate adaptation of the comic, does that feel like a comic book movie to people? Does Ghost World? Or if I put it this way, if I heard someone say, "I can't believe they turned a Jane Austen novel into a gritty, powerful, and completely engrossing crime thriller?!" I would understand that, as Jane Austen novels are simply none of those things. So when I hear someone say the same about a comic book movie, immediately I think "Do people really think that comic books can't be gritty, powerful, and completely engrossing crime thrillers?" It would be a shame if people did. So I guess my question is, what exactly makes a comic book movie feel like a comic book movie?
  24. I have a 9" 20GB Linux Eee and like it quite a bit. Keyboard was a bit of an adjustment at first since I have large hands, but after a bit of time I am almost as fast on it as I am on a standard keyboard. It's fast, lightweight and easy to take with me which is exactly why I bought it.
  25. Let's not forget comic book films like Road to Perdition, A History of Violence and Ghost World. Not to mention the dozens of other films that are highly influenced by comics like The Iron Giant, The Warriors or The Incredibles. Even the movie Stardust was originally a comic that was made into a book that was made into a movie. I just get tired of people being surprised that comics aren't empty childish drivel. Some of the best authors on the planet are comfortably working in comics, because as a medium it affords an author to do a lot of things they can't do in a standard book.
