  1. He's not actually sprinting, it just looks that way because he's so short. My list: David Eckstein Eric Byrnes Josh Hamilton (To steal a line from Fire Joe Morgan, it's better to do heroin and lose the home run derby than to not do heroin and win it) Jack Wilson Christian Guzman (insert generic Twins player who has no actual baseball skills aside from bunting and sprinting to first base on a walk) I actually like Hunter Pence and Derek Jeter.
  2. There are so many ways you could look at this, and I don't know if there is a right way. One might argue that they could just have a single swimming event where you just swim as fast as you can any way you want (is that what the "freestyle" is? I don't even know how to swim), and that having so many swimming events is like giving out separate basketball medals for shooting, defense, rebounding, dunking, etc. I'm not saying thats right, but it's another perspective. I do think though, that if a basketball player on a relatively weak team had an amazing tournament and somehow lead his team to a gold medal on his own, he would deserve to be considered among the greatest Olympians.
  3. How much do you get paid hourly aside from tips? Waiters generally make below minimum wage, which is why they are generally tipped around 20%. edit: I missed the post where you touched on this. If that's the case, you should get 20% like everyone else. Here's the problem: how are we to know that? To be honest, I'm very surprised that you are paid below minimum wage, I never would have expected that. Tipping really should be deprecated. Why can't we just add it into the price of the food, pay servers normal wages, and be done with it? That just seems 1000x more efficient.
  4. Yep. Beckham wasn't even a starter on his previous team when he moved to MLS. A better comparison might be if, say, Grant Hill went to Europe right now.
  5. He had a .371 OBP with the Yankees. Not bad, really.
  6. In your face, Milwaukee! er, what?
  7. Doesn't surprise me one bit. I really do think Mo Williams is capable of being a good NBA point guard. He just - for whatever reason - chooses not to. A bit like Vince Carter saying he's not going to dunk anymore, or Kobe Bryant deciding not to shoot in the 4th quarter. I don't know if he's been trying to pad his scoring stats to earn a big contract or what, but he has had games here and there where he played like a real PG, and not a Michael Redd wannabe...so I'm pretty sure he's physically capable of it. It's too bad for us, though. If that is indeed his attitude, a change of scenery is probably best for everyone.
  8. I went to Cambridge High School. So did some NASCAR guy, who was a horrible student by all accounts. At least he learned how to turn left.
  9. I think Alex Sanchez tried that once!
  10. He would have to get out of his current contract or wait until it expires then declare himself eligible for the MLB draft like every other player. A transfer fee would be a way of getting out of his current contract, no? I don't think MLB should be allowed to dictate how Japanese clubs do business. Anyhow, here are my changes: 1. Massive realignment - two leagues, no divisions. Regular season winners of each league play in the World Series. The playoffs are pointless, nothing more than manufactured drama IMO. 162 games is more than enough to determine which teams are the best. If you must have playoffs, have the next best teams in each league play some sort of mini-tournament for a slighly less prestigious trophy. 2. Get rid of interleague play. 3. Stop keeping track of wins, losses, and saves for pitchers. That's all I can think of now...I'm happy with just about everything else. I don't like the DH personally, but I think that little rule differences between the AL and NL help keep things interesting.
  11. I'm not sure about this. Matsuzaka had a contract with another professional club, they should not be expected to just give him up for nothing the second a Major League club came knocking. If some team in Japan demands a huge transfer fee for one of their players, they have every right to do so.
  12. I wear sandals with socks (including black argyle ones) all the time. I don't see what the problem is!
  13. Isn't that just the old Big Mac song?
  14. I think it really depends on the country. I'm sure Cristiano Ronaldo is far more marketable anywhere in Europe, or any country where football is clearly the #1 sport. If you go to some place like China, where the the most popular sport isn't quite as clear (or perhaps leans toward basketball), LeBron or Kobe would be more marketable. That's just a guess, of course.
  15. They actually do have a contintental Champions League-type tournament, which the champions of each country's domestic league participate. I'd actually like to see something like that expanded worldwide, and have NBA teams participate - that would probably lead to a lot more NBA players moving to European clubs (and vice versa). Stupid solution: make goals worth 7 points, award each team 3 points for every shot that sails over the goal, and 2 points every time they win a corner kick. Boom, there's your high-scoring game.
  16. He did pitch only 2 2/3 innnings, so its really hard to say. He wasn't good in those 3 games, but I guess that's all that was needed for the Brewers to decide to offload him. I know, hindsight goggles and such...at the time, it did seem that Balfour was not just a clever name.
  17. Usually, if there is no HD broadcast, the HD channels don't even show up in the guide on Dish Network. Is the Turbo HD thing just an HD-only package? If that's the case, my guess is that you would only get the HD games. I suppose it makes sense, as I believe they have separate satellites for HD channels (occasionally, I lose picture on HD channels due to weather, but the regular SD version still works) - they probably give you a dish that only points to those.
  18. Mine is just a Cabaret Voltaire song title. Coincidently, the name I typically use now, "richardhkirkando", is a play on the name of a member of the band (Richard H. Kirk) and some guy from my school (Kirkando Richards, which I just thought was an awesome name). Oddly enough, I've never met this Kirkando fellow in person, but I have him as a facebook friend. To this day, I'm not sure if he even realizes that his first name is part of my standard username on internet forums.
  19. Its not as bad as the Reds lineups a few managers ago...it almost seemed like they drew a new batting order out of a hat every day. I don't think batting order makes a whole lot of difference, but it's not that difficult to set it intelligently so even if it only helps a tiny bit, you might as well do it. I wonder if anybody has ever put together a stat for baseball players. I don't think it would be very meaningful, but it might be fun to look at.
  20. I can't see how being flicked by the corner of a jacket is worthy of flipping out. Maybe if the jacket has spikes on it or something, but otherwise it doesn't strike me as something that would hurt a lot.
  21. And sweeping generalizations are always right. Hey, I qualified that with an "almost"!
  22. To be fair, ESPN people almost always get overly defensive when any athlete or coach criticizes a member of the media, whether its deserved or not.
  23. I remember one interview where he just started rattling off his own stats from previous seasons. I can't remember any other player who knew his numbers so well.
  24. Well yeah, thats what happens when you put in Brian Shouse against their best righties.
