  1. Kind of a curious move. I didn't think the Brewers were short on utility infielders and I don't see Adrianza as having potential beyond that role. In fact it's hard to see a 25 man spot available for any backup infielders beyond Perez and Gennett. Are they working on something else? I'd have kept Scahill over Blazek myself.
  2. Wieters' options are drying up. It could come down to Brewers and Angels with White Sox a long shot too if they also see a sign and flip opportunity. For Boras the contract size isn't as important as finding a spot where he can put up numbers that will generate more interest a year from now.
  3. At this point, given what we've seen from Broxton, I don't understand how Szcsur is an upgrade. Even with Jimmy's poor 2016, I feel like this would be a poor deal for the Brewers. I have no idea who Szcsur is, but given we have Broxton, Brinson, Maverick, Clark and Ray in the pipeline at CF (not to mention Taylor and Wren), CF seems to be the last place we need more players. Maybe the guy is a value add, but I still think there are other places to look if we were to trade Jimmy. And I'm guessing we would be trading Jimmy at his lowest point. I think he will have a bounce back year this year given that his BB rate spiked outside of his norms last year. Szczur has spent parts of the last 3 seasons as essentially the Cubs' 25th man. Only a Cub fan could suggest a trade of a non-entity like Szczur for a controllable starter with middle of the rotation stuff.
  4. Padre Murphy's on Bell Road is a great sports bar. Not all that close to Scottsdale though.
  5. Susac's likely to get his most extensive major league action regardless if Wieters is signed or not. If Brewers did sign him, I'm sure they'd be convinced he can still catch. There'd be zero negative impact on rebuild. But it would give them a solid veteran who's played on winning teams. There's not a lot of those guys on the Brewer roster.
  6. AAA starting pitching depth might be the lowest of all their priorities. One thing the Brewers have in spades is AAA rotation depth.
  7. It's not totally without costs. Where would Butler fit in among Jungmann, Hader, Lopez, Woordruff, Ortiz, Burgos and all the likely AAA starters? All those guys need innings. I could see taking a shot if the plan is to turn him into a reliever, but otherwise, no.
  8. I'm a big Scooter fan. He's more than adequate defensively at 2B. Heck 2 of his errors last year was when he was a split second pulling his foot off the bag on double play turns. Unlike his predecessor, Gennett relays are generally accurate as is his range. We think Villar will be good there, but he's barely played 2B as a professional and the reason Villar's been moved there was because he made a lot of misplays at SS and 3B. That's hardly a ringing endorsement of his defensive abilities. Shaw is far from a sure thing too. He's a career .251 hitter who strikes out a lot and he hit just .194 in the 2nd half last year. Haven't we seen other 3B come up with Boston and look good for a few hundred AB's then flame out? Heck Stearns seem obsessed with getting those guys. Last year it was Middlebrooks and Cecchini, and now it's Shaw. Wake me up when one of those guys pans out. With Gennett relegated to bench duty for the most part, that makes the bench stronger and Counsell is certainly not going to hesitate hitting for Arcia if he's not going well or double switching out anyone in the infield. If Gennett proves to be adequate in the corner OF spots, that could mean Nieuwenhuis is expendable. Nieuwenhuis on paper is the only CF backup, but Perez looked fine out there last year and can give Broxton a day off here and there, and if need be, Brinson's a day away.
  9. I'm sure if the O's offered him for Garza, the Brewers would be interested even if they had to pick up all but a few million of Garza's deal. Thames is the guy for 1B for now, but assuming Mancini has options remaining, if he were to force his way to the big club at any point and Santana didn't work out, moving Thames to the OF down the road could happen I suppose.
  10. Listen to a Cub's telecast or broadcast sometime when they are playing the Brewers. Of all the Brewers, they single out Perez probably more than anyone for positive comments. An at bat he had against Chapman last year where he fouled off a number of 100 mph pitches, before lining a single had them in awe, basically saying it was the best AB anyone had all year against him.
  11. I can't see Cordell every becoming an everyday player. He seems to have "extra outfielder" in his future. I still like Trent Clark's chances of perhaps even edging ahead of Ray. Give him a mulligan for his 2016. They are going to at some point, likely between 2018 and 2019, step up and deal 2 or 3 of their top prospects and get that premium pitcher that they can't afford in FA who hopefully will have more than 2 years control left.
  12. Nothing's stopping them from getting rid of him just as nothing stopped them from getting rid of Suppan a few games into his last contract year. Problem with Garza is that even if he's okay, and sports something around his career ERA of around 4 through half a season, will that make him a target for contending teams when there will likely be other options available as well? Probably not. Could he put together a string of really good starts and turn into some actual value? Anything's possible, but if he does that, there's a chance the Brewers will be within striking distance themselves. Brewers need to evaluate what they have in Arizona as best they can and go with their 5 best healthy starters regardless of contracts. If they deem Garza to be one of those 5, keep him. If not, let him go. It's not all that complicated.
  13. I still think 36 year old Ryan Braun will be providing .280 BA, 25 HR and 90 RBI playing 130 games in LF for the Brewers in 2020. Brinson will be in CF, and Ray in RF. Pitching is much harder to project. By 2020, if the next Chris Sale comes along, a somewhat controllable top of the rotation starter, I look for the Brewers to surrender some top prospects to get him. They certainly won't pay the kind of money for a top of the rotation starter in FA.
  14. One thing Colorado doesn't need is OF help. David Dahl debuted very successfully in LF last year replacing Parra, who's at best their 4th OF. Dahl has star potential and isn't going anywhere. They also have Ian Desmond ticketed to play out of position at 1B because the outfield is too crowded. Besides Colorado is on Braun's no-trade list.
  15. They'll continue to be the bridesmaid. Never the bride. According to many here, the more you get in the playoffs the more likely you are to win it all (not sure if I believe that). The Dodger$ make the playoffs often. In addition, in many spheres of life- including MLB, I wouldn't bet against the guy with the most money. The Dodgers 4 losses to the Cubs were by a combined 21 runs, with none of the margins less than 4 runs. Braun wouldn't have made an iota of difference. Dodgers pitching wasn't close to good enough against a hot Cub team. No question Braun would make them a better team overall, but to get Braun, they'd need the Brewers to take back essentially dead money as they are paying luxury tax through the nose as it is. Why would the Brewers do that unless there were multiple top prospects in the deal and Dodgers weren't willing to do that. So it's a dead issue.
  16. Did I dream it or were they actually up 2 games to 1 over the Cubs in the NCLS a few months ago?
  17. Rays could just stay in house and stick Nick Franklin or Tim Beckam at 2B.
  18. Lots of bullpen innings from last year aren't around: Jeffress, Thornburg, Smith, Boyer, Capuano. More were filled by guys who are still around but certainly not locks to make the roster. Can't fill all those innings with guys with just token major league experience. Still think they could use a veteran lefty.
  19. Hard to argue when Jose Canseco mentions that his identical twin brother Ozzie used PED's as much as he did, but that didn't make him a success.
  20. Perez is also insurance in RF if Santana's shoulder flares up again. I suspect Counsell will have him in the lineup somewhere at least 5 games a week. Brewers see value there and aren't going to give him away. Dodgers could come calling at some point though.
  21. Very sad to see young people cut down tragically like that. Agree that any impact impact on Royals roster is a discussion for another day. Entire organization will feel his loss I'm sure as does all of baseball.
  22. He caught 117 games last year and threw out 35% of base stealers. What makes you think he's done? He's unsigned because Boras overvalued him and teams looked elsewhere. Brewers payroll is low enough that they could roll the dice for one year deal. Not saying he's an All Star (though he was just last year) but he's got a better track record than any catcher on the Brewer roster and it's not really close and at 30, it's not like he's ancient.
  23. Boras has obviously overvalued Wieters and he's still out there looking. Brewers don't really have a clear cut starting caliber catcher. Why not invest a modest sum say $7-9 million on a one year offer that would give him and Boras another shot at a payday next offseason and see if a good half results in some return at the deadline, ala Aaron Hill last year?
  24. I'm indifferent. You are not signing him to turn him into a prospect in July. Therefore he is just taking innings from a younger guy. The Brewers used 27 pitchers in 2016. They'll be plenty of opportunities for young guys. This isn't the minor leagues. At this level you have to perform or another guy will get his chance. A lot of the "younger" guys aren't really young. Marinez is 28. Blazek turns 28 in March. Cravy turns 28 in July. Barnes turns 27 in April. Chamberlain is competing with guys like Scahill, Cravy and Blazek for the innings provided by Boyer last year.
  25. I still think either Nelson or Anderson will be traded before opening day but if not Garza will be the odd man out. He'll be waived. Oh they could wait and hope he pitches well enough to be traded in July but they'll realize even if that happened the return would be negligible. They might even go with a 6 man rotation. The fact that Nelson and Anderson both can be optioned actually makes them easier to trade in spring training to a team needing depth at AAA. But Garza is far from a lock.
