  1. I was at the game and saw some positives. First the bunt where he hurt his finger was a heck of a bunt against a 97 mph fastball thrown right at him. He ended up allowing 3 earned runs, but two of them scored on a HR allowed by Yardley that reached on a walk and a hit batter after he had injured his finger. He had worked out of a bases loaded jam the inning before with a couple strikeouts. He allowed one hard hit ball in 73 pitches, no extra base hits, and he fanned 5.
  2. If you buy the umpire's explanation, a hitter can hit a ball softly to the first base side of the mound, run right at the pitcher in the general direction of first base then as you approach him, you can veer back to a more direct path to first base and it's obstruction because you veered and that was after all the path you chose to get to first base which apparently trumps all other rules. This is the most ludicrous call and explanation I've ever heard. Had he not veered he would have reached first base two feet inside the bag. I was at the game and there was absolutely no explanation. Play looked entirely routine. Thought maybe I had taken my eyes off the bag and Vogelbach took his foot before he had the ball or somehow bobbled it. Didn't know the call was obstruction until Diaz came up again and they listed the result of his previous AB on the scoreboard.
  3. They are spending a ton of money on the outfield and the big money guys are being outproduced by a couple of minimum salary guys. Stearns obviously undervalued Taylor as he's done with other guys drafted by the previous regime. Garcia comes off the books after this year. Maybe they should just make room for Taylor and not look back.
  4. McKinney is a real nice back up. For a week or 10 days, he can provide quality production but that's probably his ceiling. On the other hand, from what we've seen Taylor's ceiling might be a lot higher. They certainly can't justify sending him down now regardless of the fact he's the only one with options. Is eating the rest of Garcia's contract and replacing him with a minimum salary the bold move they need to take? It's pretty obvious they won't be picking up Garcia's option anyway. They let Smoak go without hesitation last year. The other thing they could try to do is to deal Vogelbach, and let McKinney be the guy who fills in for Hiura at first base.
  5. LOL no, not facts. The .797 was referring to what Garcia's OPS was 8 days ago. You are arguing a completely different point than what the original poster introduced. Actually, I'm not. Original poster wanted to know what is going on with Garcia. Is he hurt? I'm arguing that he just isn't very good, and his time with the Brewers hasn't been very good, so it's not really a surprise what we are seeing from him. You can't cherry pick his .797 and say that is the real Garcia, when he is sitting at .619 for the season. He is a below average guy that we feel the need to play, even though we have Taylor, who is outplaying him, sitting the bench. Original poster here. Actually I was referring to the .797 OPS he had just a week ago. In general up this then this season he looked fine and was making good hard contact. As I pointed out he had fanned just once in his previous six games. Garcia's never been a extreme strikeout guy but he's whiffed at an alarming rate his last 20 AB's. I asked how seemingly overnight he stopped making contact. Hopefully the slump ends as quickly as it started and he gets 3 hits tonight. Is Taylor's early success putting pressure on Garcia? Hard to believe that would affect a veteran but who knows? I mean it's likely the plan is for Taylor to step into Garcia's role in 2022. Maybe sooner??
  6. In his last 6 games, Garcia is 0 for 20 with 13 strikeouts after striking out just once in his prior 6 games. Along with that he failed to run out a popup with a runner on first resulting in an easy double play in Chicago. His OPS has dropped from .797 to .619. What's going on with him? Is he hurt? Cain's almost ready. Do they put Garcia on the DL or do they send down one of their hottest hitters in Taylor.
  7. With Robertson not available they needed someone who could play SS if needed. Zach Green hits RH but he can't play SS.
  8. Add 3 of Green, Strange-Gordon, Reyes, Peterson Subtract Hiura, Shaw, and Robertson Probably won't happen all at once but if trends continue, that's where we could be headed. Vogelbach hasn't been a huge liability playing 1B.
  9. Bought them 10 days. Hiura either gets hot or finds himself in Nashville.
  10. My guess is Suter takes the rotation spot (assuming Anderson's injury requires the DL) and Hardy comes up to replace him in the pen as the middle inning lefty. Later in the year it would be Ashby. Hopefully somebody will put a waiver claim in on Lindblom and Brewers can save a little but I seriously doubt it. Hardy isn't on the 40 man so he'll need s spot and Lindblom basically just handed one to him today.
  11. Shaw hadn't struggled the last two months of the previous season. Scooter Gennett was sent down in 2015 on May 17, but he had roughly the same amount AB's at the time that Hiura has now and hadn't struggled the previous year. The fact that there's nowhere for him to be sent is hurting him more than the team. This isn't just the last 60 PA. His slide started early in September. His OPS on September 5 was .806. He finished the year at .707. His body language is bad too.
  12. I just hope they keep Taylor long enough to get a shot at replacing Garcia next year. I think he can be a solid everyday player on a good team maybe even more than that. Stearns has shown very little patience with prospects that weren't drafted during his tenure (see Garrett Cooper and Trent Grisham). I just hope he doesn't look to deal him for some dime a dozen bullpen arm that failed elsewhere. Yes McKinney has been very good so far, but I think Taylor's earned no worse than half the AB's available with Cain and Yelich on the DL. With both doing so well, and Garcia only signed through this year, they have options and don't need to go looking for more expensive options.
  13. Anyone see that the Braves used 36 year old middle infielder Sean Kazmar Jr. to pinch hit yesterday. He had last appeared in a major league game on Sept. 23, 2008. Amazingly, in the interim years he spent time in just 3 organizations, all in the high minors including the Braves since 2013. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, the Brewer starting lineup that day was Cameron in CF, Ray Durham at 2B, Braun in LF, Fielder at 1B, Hardy at SS, Corey Hart in RF, Craig Counsell at 3B, Jason Kendall catching and Dave Bush on the mound. Other pitchers used by the Brewers that day were Eric Gagne, Todd Coffey, Guillermo Mota, and Salomon Torres.
  14. Watching Anderson pitch is like watching old school baseball. Refreshing. Quick outs, lots of groundballs. He'll get rocked from time to time when but he shrugs off those easily.
  15. That doomsday scenario is still affecting the Orioles because of their Chris Davis contract. Have to wonder if Brewers did their due diligence in medically examining Yelich before signing him to that deal. Hopefully they insured his contract. Healthy athletes don't get back flare ups every few weeks unless there's underlying issues at play.
  16. how many pitches did blaine hardy throw? did it appear that they were trying to develop him as a bona fide starting pitcher? Not likely for a 34 year old veteran who's been a solid major league reliever his entire career. More likely they're building up his arm coming off of "Tommy John light" surgery. It's just a matter of a week or two when he's very likely to replace Rasmussen or Perdomo on the active roster.
  17. It'll be interesting to see if a guy like Zach Green can get off to a hot start at AAA and offer another option at first base.
  18. Actually, he got to one out in the 7th before giving up a couple singles, and it was 2005 so well over 10 years. Obermueller, who generally struggled sprinkled in some gems in his brief career including a complete game shutout in 2004.
  19. The idea of moving the mound back a foot because reaction time for hitters has shrunk considerably in the last 50 years and would continue to do so.. I don't buy the injury argument. Pitchers are much bigger and stronger than they were when the mound was set at 60 feet 6 inches. Do kids hurt there arms when the distance increases as they get older and transition to a full distance? A foot longer will result in more balls put into play and fewer pitches needed to get outs. Besides the extra foot allows hitters just a fraction of more time to get out of the way of pitches headed at them.
  20. Nottingham doesn't solve the problem. Hiura's making progress. The first 5 games he fanned twice in each. In his last 5 he hasn't had any multiple K games and he's walked 3 times in the last two games.
  21. The Brewers clearly have a RH bench bat void. I'm not sure even the return of Robertson to bench with the return of Wong helps that with how weak his bat looks. Teams with multiple LH relievers are figuring that out. Strange-Gordon wouldn't solve that but his .279 career BA vs. LHP at least makes him usable off the bench against LH relievers. Reyes is the other option I suppose. Where's Gyroko these days?
  22. I think I'd rather have Strange-Gordon filling in at 2B than either Robertson or Peterson
  23. He's still a good player when healthy, but he's breaking down an awful lot. Team was already seriously lacking RH bench bats. Time to summon Taylor for the first of his many callups.
  24. And they have a nice group of young starters like Ashby, Small, etc. to fill in the 4th and 5th spots with low cost options going forward.
  25. Perdomo has a real shot. They can really use another lefty between their long man Suter and their closer. Waiting in the wings are Hardy and Milner both of whom were very effective in Arizona too but aren't on the 40 man.
