  1. One more comment from Hawk Harrelson today on Callix Crabbe: "I really like this little guy". Indeed Crabbe made some really nice plays.
  2. A lot of positives to take from this one. Kolb is still trying to get consistent with his release point, but he had guys hitting the ball on the ground. Basically, he got 4 outs in the inning he pitched. Turnbow looked fine. Quote from Hawk Harrelson after a Turnbow curveball: "That's the best curveball we've seen all spring". Villanueva was in total command for two strong innings. He's making a case for moving up on the power 50. Rottino continues to rake. When the rosters expand in September, his bat might be nice to have around.
  3. Getting Sox telecast down here and Villanueva was very impressive that inning. He indeed does have a nasty changeup. Fastball readings were 92, which isn't all that bad.
  4. I wonder how many figured Carlos Villanueva would be in major league camp longer than Eveland.
  5. "Kolb won't make the final 25 if Yost plans to keep the best 25" This is spring training, not spring tryout camp. Kolb wasn't brought back to try out. Barring injury, he'll be on the opening day roster.
  6. Rivera definitely, but no on Johnson. Johnson's major league hitting is really no better than Moeller. He'd be decent AAA insurance if Moeller is jettisoned.
  7. I beginning to wonder about Clark. He's K'd 10 times so far this spring. He seems as if he's working on upping his walk totals by taking a lot more pitches but by doing so, he's forced to hit the pitcher's pitch. Since its spring, that's fine, but I think if he does that in the regular season, yes he'll get more walks but at the expense of fewer hits.
  8. Purdue behind Buente has now beaten two ranked teams on consecutive Fridays, first North Carolina and now Missouri. Another Purdue player worth mentioning is shortstop Mitch Hillegoss. An all Big Ten performer last year as a sophomore, he batted over .400 with a solid .967 fielding average, and 25 steals in 28 attempts.
  9. They do not really need a 5th starter until April 17th. If Sheets is out longer than that, then someone would have to fill that spot. Unless Helling is healthy, its pretty wide open at this point. One name to keep in back of mind if its serious is Jose Contreras.
  10. If those listening hear any more, please keep us posted. Lets just hope its Sheets needing more time to build up after his injury last year though I'm getting Cal Eldred flashbacks.
  11. El Caballo fanned in bottom of the 9th with bases loaded one out and tying run on third. Fortunately for him and Panama, the Cuban pitcher hit the next hitter, forcing in the tying run. Stay tuned.
  12. I would like to mention a guy who plays for Purdue who just happened to have 2 of their hits off of Bard on Saturday. His name is Neal Gorka. Neal is a 6'4" 245 lb right fielder. Gorka walked on at Purdue after a nice high school career at Westchester (IL) St. Joseph's, a well known basketball school that produced Isiah Thomas and was featured in the 90's documentary "Hoop Dreams". Gorka did not play as a freshman, but won a spot on the Purdue team during fall tryouts his sophomore year. His first two years, he saw very limited action but last year as a redshirt junior, he won the starting spot in RF and posted a very nice .337 batting average. This was very impressive considering Purdue played a very tough non-conference schedule that included Texas and Mississippi. Gorka went undrafted last year and has returned to Purdue for his final year of eligibilty. As a 5th year senior, he's on the old side but I'd like to see him get an opportunity in pro baseball somewhere though as an excellent student, he has plenty of career options. He's a classic late bloomer. How do I know so much about him? His younger brother was in my daughter's class at our parish's school so I've been following him closely at Purdue.
  13. To me this stat is meaningless. I just do not accept the notion that all players are somehow lucky when their Hits per BIP is high. Bad hitters over the long haul will have fewer Hits per BIP than good hitters because they aren't as good. Period.
  14. Any service making projections that still thinks Jenkins plays LF and Scarborough, Magruder, Borders, Durrington et al are still Brewer property isn't doing its homework.
  15. He was outstanding for most of 2005, but started getting knocked around more just before he ended up on the DL. He blew a game against the Giants I attended in late July. That was at a time they were making headway in the wild card standings and that loss hurt. Granted that was the game of the infamous 3 ball walk to that walking machine Deivi Cruz but he got pounded too. He was also bad the second half of 2004. I'd like to be sure he can contribute bigger in the second half of the year. For the Brewers to contend, they need that from him.
  16. I think the plan is to give Hart at least enough major league AB's in a utility role to determine his readiness to be a full time major league player while at the same time seeing if Cruz continues to progress at AAA. If Hart shows he's capable of handling major league pitching and Cruz develops his plate discipline, I think they will conclude they won't need to sign Carlos. I don't anticipate his being traded though if the team is in contention.
  17. This just in. Magic number to finish ahead of Cubs is down to 3. Cubs lose 3-2 to Pirates. After loading the bases with no outs in 9th, Patterson and Grieve (some will remember him) strike out then Macias pops out.
  18. The Badgers don't bump the Brewers off of 620. I would assume the Extra Innings has the games with the Astro feed for those of us out of state with the package.
  19. I totally agree. The discussion of Branyan had to do with the look of the club next season. It was a lively topic with a wide variety of opinions. There will be a lot of discussion about players in the months to come. Why should one be off limits?
  20. I don't expect anything near full houses Friday or Saturday either. The high price of gas has affected baseball too.
  21. Not sure what the need was to send Capuano out there in the 7th. It's mopup time, when guys like Obermueller, Capellan should get in some work.
  22. I'm enjoying this one. Bookers ERA is now 63.00.
  23. Russell Branyan swung the bat 9 times in this game. He missed the ball 8 times. He just got a tiny piece of the one that nicked his bat. I think just about every poster here could do that. There is no justifiable reason for Branyan to be in the lineup. Bill Hall has put together a solid season, offensively and defensively and with Hardy swinging the bat well, Hall should be the everyday third baseman with Helms and Cirillo backing up.
  24. I'd rather see this: Clark CF Hardy SS Jenkins RF Lee LF Hall 2B Fielder 1B Helms 3B Moeller C Helling P Branyan hasn't been healthy enough to do much for the last month so keep the hot bat of Helms in there. Overbay may well get hot at anytime but more its more likely he will continue to struggle. Don't underate Harang. He's been the Reds best pitcher for most of the year and last and he's got pretty decent stuff.
