  1. Keuchel was done in 2022. Nothing he's done since then convinces me he belongs in the major leagues much less part of a contender's rotation. What we saw today is what he is.
  2. Carlos Rodriguez (the Nashville pitcher) has had a terrific month of May. He's 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA, 21 Ks vs. 4 BB and a .190 BAA. If you count his last April start, he's won 4 starts in a row.
  3. Frelick's numbers last year were nothing to write home about. There was no bigger myth about this Brewer team than it's supposed outfield depth. Depth, really? They hoped Chourio was ready. So they traded away one veteran (Taylor), and didn't bring in one veteran OF to compete for a job. Frelick has 6 extra base hits in over 150 PA. That's basically the guy he was after a fast start last year. Sure they could send Chourio down, but who's their alterative? The best hitting outfielder not named Yelich is Bauers, and against RH pitching he should be in the lineup but it's looking right now like he's more needed at 1B. Wiemer doesn't seem like he's an improvement over his 23 form, and besides he's hurt. Perkins started off on fire, but he's hitting .125 in May with an OPS under .500. That leaves career minor leaguer Brewer Hicklen who struck out over 200 times in AAA in 2022 or Owen Miller who's outfield experience is limited, but at least he has stretches of being a decent major league bat. He also could fill in at 1B and that would allow Bauers to play a corner outfield spot. Mitchell has a tremendous opportunity once he returns.
  4. I don't get the hate for Bauers. His OPS+ of 92 is significantly higher than Dunn, Chourio and Frelick. He's a defensive wizard at first base but still adequate in the corner outfield too. I'd argue that their best lineup includes Bauers albeit down near the bottom. He's certainly an upgrade over last year's and this year's version of Tellez
  5. Bryse Wilson was once a top 100 prospect with the Braves. Since becoming a Brewer, he's had a WHIP of 1.038 in 106 innings. He's allowed a mere 6.6 hits per 9. I think it's safe to say he's made improvements, but the raw talent has always been there. He's settled into a starter role quite nicely. Much like Wilson, I could easily see a scenario where Hudson gets stretched out into a starter. You can dwell on the negative (oh the pitching is only average), but we've seen that when there's a healthy Yelich in the lineup, this is clearly a better offensive team than they've had the last several seasons. Contreras is a legit MVP candidate. Turang to this point deserves All Star consideration. Hoskins and Sanchez can go deep at any moment. There's a concern the pen is being overworked, but the guy who's now the closer, Megill, has only logged a total of 8 2/3 innings.
  6. Hoskins has 113 lifetime home runs against RH pitching. That's way more than all the LH bats currently on the active roster combined. Sanchez has 125 against RH pitching. Opposing teams don't respect the LH bats the Brewers are putting in the lineup. They aren't exactly tearing apart RH pitching.
  7. I don't see any scenario where this outfield is too crowded. They were forced to bring up Wiemer who was batting .220 at AAA when Yelich went down. They really haven't come close to replacing Yelich. Hopefully, he'll be back and productive. Do we really have any idea on how Mitchell will do? The guy will have missed a full season and a third of another. They have guys with options they can use if somehow everyone starts being productive. Right now the outfield production is well below par.
  8. Reds released Mike Ford off their Louisville roster. All Ford did in 2023 in 219 AB's for Seattle was hit 16 HR, slug .475, and post an OPS+ of 121. In AAA, he's posted an OPS of .920. Given the lack of production from Bauers, Ford would seem to be a good fit on a Brewer team that's overloaded with rookie and 2nd year guys.
  9. Why is Murphy "protecting" Contreras with Tyler Black, a rookie in his first week in the majors batting behind him? Black has no business batting 3rd in a major league lineup. Maybe someday he will but this is not it. I know that Yelich's absence creates a huge hole in the lineup, but Hoskins and Adames are proven major league power bats and given the current makeup of the team, Adames should be batting 3rd, Hoskins 4th and Sanchez 5th as primary DH. Yeah, that means we sacrifice some of the speed, but those guys aren't getting on base and they still have spots 6-9 and leadoff to put the speed in the lineup. While we're at it, if LH bats aren't hitting, stop the platooning already. Ortiz had been showing signs of life and he hasn't been in the lineup in forever. Same goes for Sanchez.
  10. You send him down because when Yelich returns the 3 best OF right now are Yelich, Perkins and Frelick. Chourio needs to play almost every day regardless of level. The case can be made that minor league teams exist for the purpose of developing major league players but major league teams object is to win as many games as possible, particularly a team currently leading their division. A strong case could also be made that Black deserves the spot currently held by Dunn, but I suspect Brewer brass prefers Black playing every day.
  11. "Crowded outfield" is a complete misnomer. There's actually very little outfield depth at the major league level or the system in general. Chourio may be a future star, but he's lost right now. He should be at AAA. Wiemer was overmatched by major league pitching last year and he's become more a suspect than a prospect. Mitchell can't stay healthy. Frelick is a decent outfielder but more suited to a 4th or 5th OF because of his lack of power. Yelich's rebound has been stopped cold with back issues returning. It looked like he was back to his MVP form, but when he returns, who knows? None of what's happened with this group should be a surprise. It was all fairly predictable. Perkins has been outstanding for the first month, and who knows where they'd be without him but can he be a quality everyday outfielder? Meanwhile, the guy everyone couldn't wait to unload has the 3rd highest WAR on the Mets as a part time player. To quote Ron Darling, the other day on a Mets telecast, "they've got to find a way to get Taylor in the lineup as much as possible".
  12. I don't understand the value of optioning a reliever the manager trusts in high leverage situations because he's not available for one day just to cover a meaningless inning or two in a game that's a blowout.
  13. Koenig was a starter most of his minor league career. As recently as 2022 he made 18 starts at AAA and 5 more with Oakland. He's gone multiple innings in 3 of his 5 appearances. Could it be he's being groomed to take Wilson's role in the pen and Wilson will settle in a rotation spot at least until Gasser is deemed ready which shouldn't be too long. But maybe Koenig can be stretched out?
  14. Frelick made the biggest defensive mistake of the season when he misplayed the De La Cruz single into an inside the park HR. Since then, he's looked hesitant whether it's been in CF or LF. Hoskins hasn't been great but Bauers has been so smooth by comparison at 1B it makes Hoskins look worse than he is.
  15. I agree that Wiemer move is a mistake, but I would have brought up Owen Miller, not Hicklen. Bauers has started 90 big league games in LF and Miller has played there a few times too. Either fill a spot in the order better than Wiemer.
  16. I was at Maryville last spring (23) and saw a 20 year old Tayden Hall step to the plate in a big league game and stroke a hit to the gap. I think this is the year he climbs up the ladder in the Brewer system.
  17. Taylor was recovering from a shoulder injury for much of the year. Over August and September he slugged .572. No offense to Perkins, but Taylor provides a little more pop.
  18. Seems like a few weeks ago, that everyone was talking about the outfield depth. In fact Arnold was so sure he had plenty of depth in the OF, that the first move he made in the offseason was to trade away Tyrone Taylor and then have Frelick transition to 3B. Now that depth is gone. Wiemer, not surprisingly needs time at AAA to work on a revamped swing and Mitchell is hurt as usual. Now for the time being Frelick is back in the outfield as an everyday player. That leaves Glen Perkins as the only true extra outfielder. At best, Perkins is a 5th outfielder. The Mets backup catcher is Omar Narvaez. If I'm Arnold, I'm on the phone with Stearns and offering him Haase for Tyrone back.
  19. In your summary of the 23 offense, you completely overlooked the late season slugging contribution of Tyrone Taylor. Taylor made 39 starts in August and September when he took over for the struggling Joey Wiemer, and socked 8 HR in 139 AB's, slugging a combined .572 in those months. He was every bit as much of a contributor after the trade deadline as either Santana or Canha.
  20. Hurt had 110 K's in 65 innings in AA last season, then for good measure he fanned 42 in 27 innings at AAA. Count me in on these moves.
  21. Only way I'd keep him would be in the Bryse Wilson role in long relief. Wilson has earned that last rotation spot for now. Let's face it the number 5 starter is a place holder for Gasser. I think they really want Gasser in that spot by end of May.
  22. In 10 of his starts last year, Clevinger allowed 0 or 1 run. In his last 10 starts, he had 7 quality starts. In those 7 starts, he allowed just 6 earned runs over 48 innings. That included a complete game where he allowed 1 run, and 2 starts that went 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, and a third 7 inning start where he allowed 1 run on 1 hit and fanned 10.
  23. Why not just give Bryce Wilson a shot as a starter? As far as FA. how about Clevinger? I get that he has had personal issues, but the guy was a 3.3 WAR pitcher for the White Sox last year while getting trashed in the Chicago media for much of the year.
  24. I still think he made a mistake dealing Hauser and Taylor and getting little other than some modest salary relief in return. If he were still on the team, Hauser would be slotted in right now as the 3rd or 4th starter and still could have trade value at the deadline. The argument for dealing Taylor was it alleviated a crowded outfield but in my mind you don't just give away good players and Taylor is a good, solid major league outfielder in the prime of his career that still is cheap at just over $2 million this season. Fact is that Taylor is coming off the best 2 months of his career. Give him 3-4 more months in a Brewer uniform putting up those kind of numbers and he'd be in significantly more demand as a trade piece than he was this winter. Now if Chourio rakes out of the gate and/or Wiemer's swing changes bear immediate fruit, then great, but there's no veteran fall back outfielder currently on the roster.
