  1. I was at Maryville last spring (23) and saw a 20 year old Tayden Hall step to the plate in a big league game and stroke a hit to the gap. I think this is the year he climbs up the ladder in the Brewer system.
  2. Taylor was recovering from a shoulder injury for much of the year. Over August and September he slugged .572. No offense to Perkins, but Taylor provides a little more pop.
  3. Seems like a few weeks ago, that everyone was talking about the outfield depth. In fact Arnold was so sure he had plenty of depth in the OF, that the first move he made in the offseason was to trade away Tyrone Taylor and then have Frelick transition to 3B. Now that depth is gone. Wiemer, not surprisingly needs time at AAA to work on a revamped swing and Mitchell is hurt as usual. Now for the time being Frelick is back in the outfield as an everyday player. That leaves Glen Perkins as the only true extra outfielder. At best, Perkins is a 5th outfielder. The Mets backup catcher is Omar Narvaez. If I'm Arnold, I'm on the phone with Stearns and offering him Haase for Tyrone back.
  4. In your summary of the 23 offense, you completely overlooked the late season slugging contribution of Tyrone Taylor. Taylor made 39 starts in August and September when he took over for the struggling Joey Wiemer, and socked 8 HR in 139 AB's, slugging a combined .572 in those months. He was every bit as much of a contributor after the trade deadline as either Santana or Canha.
  5. Hurt had 110 K's in 65 innings in AA last season, then for good measure he fanned 42 in 27 innings at AAA. Count me in on these moves.
  6. Only way I'd keep him would be in the Bryse Wilson role in long relief. Wilson has earned that last rotation spot for now. Let's face it the number 5 starter is a place holder for Gasser. I think they really want Gasser in that spot by end of May.
  7. In 10 of his starts last year, Clevinger allowed 0 or 1 run. In his last 10 starts, he had 7 quality starts. In those 7 starts, he allowed just 6 earned runs over 48 innings. That included a complete game where he allowed 1 run, and 2 starts that went 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, and a third 7 inning start where he allowed 1 run on 1 hit and fanned 10.
  8. Why not just give Bryce Wilson a shot as a starter? As far as FA. how about Clevinger? I get that he has had personal issues, but the guy was a 3.3 WAR pitcher for the White Sox last year while getting trashed in the Chicago media for much of the year.
  9. I still think he made a mistake dealing Hauser and Taylor and getting little other than some modest salary relief in return. If he were still on the team, Hauser would be slotted in right now as the 3rd or 4th starter and still could have trade value at the deadline. The argument for dealing Taylor was it alleviated a crowded outfield but in my mind you don't just give away good players and Taylor is a good, solid major league outfielder in the prime of his career that still is cheap at just over $2 million this season. Fact is that Taylor is coming off the best 2 months of his career. Give him 3-4 more months in a Brewer uniform putting up those kind of numbers and he'd be in significantly more demand as a trade piece than he was this winter. Now if Chourio rakes out of the gate and/or Wiemer's swing changes bear immediate fruit, then great, but there's no veteran fall back outfielder currently on the roster.
  10. The additions of Hoskins and Sanchez has fortified the offense against LH pitching enough that they should be able to be patient with Wiemer especially if Chourio makes the club out of spring training. Personally, I thought they were a bit premature in unloading Taylor but not so much just because he was a RH bat. Beyond Yelich, there simply is very little major league experience in the OF and I'd rather have all those young guys getting regular AB's either in the majors or AAA. Maybe moving Frelick to the infield solves that.
  11. The White Sox are overvaluing Cease which is why he still hasn't been moved. Yes he has one more year of control than Burnes but he also is coming off a year where he posted an ERA that was double what it was in 2022. The Sox put the blame on command issues. A lot of things can cause command to be off, but not all of them are easy fixes. I listen to a lot of Chicago talk radio. I get the feeling that Sox don't want to risk starting the season with Cease because if he gets hurt, his value vaporizes. They're going to either blink and drop his price significantly or take a huge risk that he can re-establish value before the deadline. If I'm the Brewers, I keep an eye on the situation. It might make more sense to get involved at the deadline.
  12. Brewers would be wise to hold on to Frelick, Wiemer, and Mitchell for that matter and not see them breakout for another team. Yeah i get they seem to have one outfielder too many but it's not like any of them have yet shown sustained success in the big leagues and they still have options. Wiemer's undergone significant swing changes. I'd let him start the year in Nashville and see what the results are there before I bring him up.
  13. Yeah Gasser seems well suited for the inevitable need to call up a starter. Given that behind Peralta are Miley, who's missed a boatload of starts the last couple seasons, Junis, who hasn't had a full season as a starter since 2019, Rea who generally loses effectiveness after 5 innings, it's anyone's guess who ends up 2 through 4 a few months into the season, much less being able to predict the 5th spot. I don't think Wilson can be ruled out either. Nobody wants to even think about Peralta going down with an injury as he did in 2022. I think the Brewers will be on the lookout for starting pitchers all season.
  14. I think they will trade Adames, but if they don't I'd play Adames at 3B. Ortiz at SS, and Black at 2B. Would Adames be too proud to shift to 3B? Maybe, but after the year he had in 2023, and the fact the Brewers don't seem interested in an extension, what leverage does Adames have?
  15. Frelick, Mitchell and Wiemer all have options. So does Chourio for that matter. It's become fairly obvious that Chourio makes the opening day roster. His contract and the fact that Taylor was traded early on the offseason signaled their intentions. None of the Wiemer, Frelick or Mitchell did enough in 2023 to solidify a starting outfield job. With DH job pretty much in the hands of whichever catcher isn't catching that day, Yelich is the everyday leftfielder again. I think it's a certainty that one of the three from last year get optioned.
  16. If they don't trade Adames, is moving him to 3B a possibility they'd explore? I think they will move him, but if they don't Adames doesn't block Ortiz at 3B and he'd provide a power bat at a corner infield spot that lacks one. That would give them 3 guys in the lineup most days with 25+ HR power.
  17. He's a power bat on a team that lacks power. His 19 HR season in less than 300 AB's would have tied him with Yelich for 2nd on the Brewers last year. If Rowdy had produced to the level Sanchez did, Rowdy would still be a Brewer. His job isn't to get on base, it's to hit the ball over the wall and drive in runs. I would expect him to get around 400 PA this year (maybe more if Bauers is a bust) and hit 20-25 dingers with 60-65 RBI.
  18. He's a little bit of a risk because his lows have been pretty low, but I don't know where you're going to get a guy with a power ceiling in the 30-35 HR range for $7 million. He's got 173 career home runs, and a .469 career slugging pct. I think he proved he had more in the tank with the Padres last year. He's only 31. That he can catch is a big plus. On days he catches, you can DH Contreras and keep his bat in the lineup too and keep both guys fresh. They lost a significant contributor with Caratini gone. Now they not only replaced the offense that Victor produced, they upgraded.
  19. I don't see not getting Mayo as a big negative. Brock Wilken plays the same position and could shoot up prospect lists with a good year in the high minors this year (Keith Law already has him in his top 100). Wilken didn't show a ton of power in the minors last year but I'm sure the Brewers expect him to be a 25 HR guy.
  20. Well Hall had a better 2023 postseason than Burnes. Joking aside, I think he's a guy who's going to have a significant role this season.
  21. Any chance we could get Xavier Edwards in this deal if Brewers included Turang or Maldanado?
  22. Wes Clarke is a legit 1B prospect with an ETA of 2025. Then there's Brock Wilken who's primarily a 3B. He's being fast tracked through the system and could emerge as an option to take over at 3B in 25, allowing Black to move to first, or they could move him to 1B if Clarke doesn't progress as hoped and leave Black at 3B. I'd add one of the young outfielders and say Dunn to the deal and see if that could pry Xavier Edwards from the Marlins in the deal.
  23. Well Arnold's faith in him might be a big part of the reason that Houser was dealt. Will be interesting to which pitcher has the better season, Ashby or Houser? My money is on Houser in the short term. My inkling is that Gasser starts more games than Ashby too. Arnold has to be patient with Ashby. He's signed through 2027.
  24. I'm fine with this signing as well. His minor and major league stats are unique in that he hasn't had 500 PA in any one season since 2016 and yet he's still just 28. Not a lot of home runs but he did have 16 doubles in just 206 PA last year. He had 103 OPS+ in both 21 and 22. That kind of production would be welcome at spots of need on this team.
