  1. I can certainly understand Braun's frustration, most fans seem to be feeling quite a bit of that and we aren't even on the team. I'm sure it's even worse for the players. However, where Braun is wrong (in my opinion) is in thinking that the other players and the front office don't also share his frustration. Kicking guys when they're down has always been considered classless. Prince took a much more conciliatory tone in some recent comments about the upcoming Cards series: "It's important, but it's still a long season. Hopefully, we can come out all right, but if not, that's just the way it is. I don't want to put too much pressure on the situation. It's early. We have a long way to go."
  2. I like trying to get Lopez. I don't really like getting Davis. Been there and so forth.
  3. Baker was traded for Al Alburquerque? What a great name! I hope that guy makes the majors at some point. I was hoping his middle name started with B., so he could be Al B. Alburquerque but no such luck. However, according to bbref, his name is Alberto J. Alburquerque, which means he could be Albie Alburquerque, which accomplishes the same thing.
  4. I hope they get it worked out. The article doesn't really make it clear why new ownership must be found, but I hope it is. I wonder how much they would cost?
  5. Why would they be suspended? A-Rod wasn't.
  6. Vs. LHP: Cameron Braun Hardy Fielder Hart Hall McGehee catcher pitcher Vs. RHP Gerut RF/CF Fielder Gamel Braun Cameron/Hart Hardy Counsell catcher pitcher
  7. I'm still not totally convinced that Gamel (or Escobar, I guess) will hit enough to make himself a worthy 'untouchable'. I certainly wouldn't deal him for a rental, but I think the right player could come along to make it worthwhile to trade him (or Escobar). In my mind, the only guys who should really be considered untouchable are MVP-level players (or guys you think will develop into that kind of player). What if the Orioles went crazy and offered Brian Matusz for Gamel? Or if the Rangers got sick of Hank Blalock's sub-.300 OBP and offered Neftali Feliz? Neither of those things are likely to happen, but I don't see what good comes out of ruling out trades. Hopefully Doug is just using this talk to make it clear that he values Gamel and Alcides very highly. After 2011, the only guys left from this team will be Braun and Gallardo (and CV). If the Brewers can get a pitcher who they think will be valuable now and beyond 2011, I'd say go for it. Sometimes a chance has to be taken.
  8. What's Parra's excuse? Or Suppan in April? They both had the legendary Kendall catching them. It's just one of those things, nothing to worry about, imo. Bush has been pitching poorly lately. Unless he's hurt, I expect he will start pitching better at some point.
  9. I don't get how that's the problem. The problem is his weak bat, not the fact that people are willing to notice the fact that his bat is useless.
  10. I like it how it is. Weird sun effects are going to happen when you build a stadium that basically has a sun roof rather than a fully retractable roof. The whole point of having the retractable roof rather than just a dome is to let natural light in. Covering the windows means they should have just built an old-school dome. I don't understand why people feel the need to complain about every little thing. Now shadows are apparently too big of an obstacle for professional athletes to deal with. "For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good." In other words, it effects both teams, so what's the big deal?
  11. I like trying to get him but I don't see it happening. From all appearances, it doesn't seem like the Brewers think there is anything wrong with how Kendall is playing so I doubt they see the need to upgrade, unfortunately.
  12. Halladay's team has as good of a record as the Brewers. I doubt they are ready to sell just yet.
  13. If they trade for Brad Penny, I will be so disappointed. Don't let it be some washed up garbage like him.
  14. I am quite pleased by this news. The movies (somehow I had missed that the 4th one was out, I'll have to order it) had maybe lost a little bit of the magic of the series, but not much. Very excited to see this development, I had expected that after the movies, no more would be heard of Futurama. Glad to know that I was wrong.
  15. I don't know, they would probably insist on the Brewers throwing in a Rueben Quevedo game-used bat too. Deal-breaker for me.
  16. This is exciting. I actually hope it's a bat, but I know a pitcher is more likely.
  17. Why so much hatred towards kids who are just trying to get themselves a good deal?
  18. I'm excited for everybody who was hoping for Arnett. I'm pretty pleased with the pick too, he seems like he could be pretty good. They compared him on MLB Network to Josh Johnson, which would obviously be great.
  19. It's not a dead league. ESPN is paying the WNBA for those TV rights (for 7 more years too). If the league was dead, why would they do that? $12 million per year is nothing at all, that's less than $1 million per team in losses, and that's only if we take sports owners at their word for the first time in history. As late as 1965, the Red Sox drew 8,000 fans per game. The Brewers drew less than that in 1972. The White Sox drew less than 6,000 in 1970. Sports leagues and teams (really, any business) take time to build a fan base. Also, as I've mentioned, people often totally ignore the indirect benefits for the NBA (and basketball in general) in continuing to support the WNBA.
  20. Unless this is one of the ways the NBA is subsidizing the WNBA. 3,000 actual people buying tickets and walking thorugh the gate, 5,000 extra tickets purchased by the NBA or given away as freebies (and never used) to boost attendance to ~8,000 per game. I only say this because the handful of times the WNBA has been on my TV screen it hasn't looked remotely close to 8,000 people. That's the case for any minor league, and even some major leagues. There are always kids days and specials and giveaways and things of that nature. What about the ratings being higher than NHL ratings? Unless every non-MLB-NFL-NBA league is on the verge of folding, I don't see why the WNBA should be singled out as being singularly shaky. I think it fits some people's agendas to believe that the WNBA is a doomed enterprise. I don't agree with that, and I think there are numbers to back up my belief. Could it still fail? Yes, of course. Is failure inevitable? No, I don't see any reason to believe that that is the case, given the numbers that I've pointed out here. This bad economy will be tougher for the WNBA to get through than it will be for the big 3 but if the WNBA can make it through the next couple years, I think/hope it will last for awhile.
  21. I think Snell could be a good reliever but as a starter he seems lackluster, and not likely to be an upgrade on any of the 5 in the current rotation (except Suppan, but he's not going anywhere, unfortunately). However, the Pirates would probably want to value Snell as if he was still a good starter like he was in 2007. I'd take him if they were giving him away though.
  22. I disagree. 8,000 per game is far more than the leagues that the Admirals and Wave play in draw. It's far more than the Spanish league (probably the 2nd best league in the world behind the NBA) draws. It's more than the Euroleague draws. It's more than the Kontinental Hockey League (2nd best hockey league in the world) draws. It's as good or better than many 2nd and 3rd division soccer leagues throughout the world. It's better than every (U.S.) baseball minor league. For some reason, it fits many people's agendas to pretend that there is no interest in the WNBA when that is patently false. Nationally televised WNBA games drew an average of 413,000 viewers last season. The NHL didn't get within 100,000 viewers of that this past season and nobody thinks the NHL is in imminent danger of being shut down. The WNBA is a legitimate league. It is also a fragile, fledgling league, but there is no reason to think it is a charity or anything of that nature. It draws more viewers than one U.S. major league and more spectators than almost any minor league throughout the world.
  23. What I'm saying is that hemorrhages is relative. I'm sure they're probably losing a few million a year, but that is not hemorrhaging in pro sports. 8,000 per game times 238 games is 1.9 million in attendance per year. Even if they are only getting $5 per ticket, that covers the maximum team salaries right there. Sure, they may have to pay some rent, but I'm not sure about how that works, especially considering most teams are owned by entities that also control their arenas. I think the NBA sees value in those 1.9 million fans attending basketball games and also in keeping women involved in pro basketball throughout their lives. Who's to say that whatever losses the WNBA incurs aren't more than balanced out by more women attending or watching NBA games? I don't think the calculus is as simple as some people would like it to be.
  24. I don't really see how they're related. The WNBA gets good attendance for a minor league (8,000 per game), they have a national TV deal that puts them on major networks (ABC & ESPN, in addition to the NBA house channel) and actually gives them rights fees, and they are by far the most successful women's league in history. The NBA may be subsidizing them to some extent (it's not clear to what extent) but the amount would be small, considering the maximum salary for the entire league is $10,439,000 (in other words, less than what Bobby Simmons will make next year).
