  1. Congratulations on the comment-user name synergy. A truly Major League effort.
  2. On the bunt out in the top of the 7th...wasn't Pina kinda blocking home plate? His foot was blocking the corner of the bag before the throw from Jesus came in. Really glad there was no challenge there.
  3. He had an ERA of 4 last year...and after tonight's performance, he's already up to 3.27...and his K/9 IP and K/BB rates are actually worse than they were last year. Plus, his ERA was markedly worse in the second half of 2017 than the first (4.45 vs. 3.63 pre-ASB). I see a player who I fully expect to regress, which I'll admit is confirmation bias when he lives up to my vote of no-confidence. It's probably a bit of hyperbole to say he's not a major league pitcher, since his ERA isn't that bad...but he's a player who has me biting my nails any time he shows up in an even moderate-leverage situation.
  4. As the guy who's been saying all year he had no confidence in Barnes...the problem with that theory is that JB is a major league option to pitch with a 4-run lead.
  5. At least Barnes picked a game that the Crew were likely to lose before going full Barnes on us.
  6. Honest question: if visiting baseball players continue to insist that the Pfister hotel is haunted...why do teams keep staying at the Pfister?
  7. Kelenic and Weathers in back-to-back picks, inside the Top 10....because this draft hates me. (Neither one had a real shot at being there at #21, but a little intrigue would have been nice.)
  8. If we're going to talk commercials in a Sophia Minneart thread, let's just say she's not a natural at reading scripts written by someone else. When talking in ads, she seems to speak as though she doesn't actually know how many other words are going to be in the sentence, which constantly throws her inflection off...to the extent I'm often surprised that's the take they decided to go with. Outside of that, she's cute and she seems to like baseball; I don't really need much more than that out of a sideline reporter.
  9. I just find it funny that Barnes' ERA has doubled since I suggested he would become the new bullpen scapegoat.
  10. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/05/04/packers-waive-incumbent-punter-after-drafting-one/ Vogel waived...we knew they liked JK Scott enough to draft him, but they must really like him. Hope he lives up to the hype.
  11. Jeffress bails out Barnes; time to build the lead back up!
  12. Chiming in a bit late, but count me among those impressed with the new GM effectively flipping a 3rd round pick in 2018 for an extra 1st round pick in 2019, all by sliding back 4 spots. I would have liked Derwin James at 14 (more than Fitzpatrick, since I was paranoid they'd try him at corner after just having dealt away a college safety who struggled at CB)...but when someone offers you 2 first round picks for your one, you take it. I'm more concerned with Alexander's injury history than I am with his height; even if he needs help over the top covering someone like Julio Jones....so would guys who are a half-inch taller. Now, here's hoping they use some of their extra resources to grab an extra day 2 pick, and hopefully find a WR with the top-end speed to get separation, along with some needed depth at the O-Line and defensive front 7.
  13. ...as a starter, or as a reliever? I'd love to see Woodruff given a shot at Suter's spot in the rotation, if only to give him the shot before Miley gets the opportunity, based on Wade's spring training performance. Per Wikipedia, the injury can be caused by "a fall onto an outstretched hand." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulnar_collateral_ligament_injury_of_the_thumb ...while that diving stop (and throw to the bag) last night was fun to watch, it's clearly where he got hurt when rolling over his glove hand.
  14. That's pretty close to my thoughts on the subject as well. So long as Guerra continues to pitch like the 2016 version of himself, you have to assume he's locked in to the #4 spot in the rotation. The question of whether Miley pitches in long relief vs. as the #5 starter largely comes down to how well Suter pitches before Miley is fully ready to return. While Counsell does not let most Brewers starters go much beyond 6 innings / 100 pitches, it's hard for me to see the team wanting to spend a full season of Suter barely being able to reach the 6th inning. Suter has been good, but not durable; Miley has been durable, but not particularly good as a MLB pitcher. My gut says Suter gets a game or two off from starting, then gets plugged back into the rotation, barring an injury to the other 4 starting pitchers.
  15. That's what led me to make the post complaining about Barnes in the first place: because he is the guy pitching in leverage spots in the 9th inning. With the way the bullpen is being used, we're seeing Jeffress and Hader in important moments in the 6th, 7th, 8th innings....meaning they can't come in fresh for the 9th in a close game. That works when you have Knebel to close the door, but otherwise leaves you with your 4th best reliever pitching in save situations. Maybe Matt Albers is supposed to be the guy Counsell wants for that position when he's available. Having pitched 2 innings on 4/9, he wasn't available for the double - technically triple - blown save game on 4/10. We'll get a better sense of that going forward. If that is the case, then the real problem with the bullpen is the starters' failure to complete the 6th inning, which puts more work on the bullpen in general. I actually think the Brewers are doing a decent job of trying to mitigate that burden by shuffling the last guys in the pen between Milwaukee and AAA. By pitching your better relievers in the middle innings, though, it means they will always pitch....since you won't be in the position where Hader can take a day off because someone like Drake or Barnes let the game get out-of-hand in the 6th / 7th innings; conceivably they're putting more of that stress on their top relievers.
  16. While most of the denizens of the forum have their hate on for Oliver Drake, it's Jacob Barnes who I dread seeing on the mound. I'll concede that by the stats, Drake has been the worse pitcher for the Brewers. However, the thing that makes Barnes so dreadful is that his failures have been more impactful on the team, presumably because Counsell has more confidence in Barnes than he does Drake. In 2017, Barnes blew more save opportunities in the second half of the season (5) than Drake did all year (3). This year, Drake's only blown save came in the 6th inning on Tuesday (4/10), in what wasn't really a save situation; Barnes' 2 blown saves this past week have come in the 9th inning. Which leads me to something I thought about posting yesterday. I get that the Brewers are operating their bullpen in reverse, trying to get their best relievers to pitch in the critical moments of the game...but I'd really like to see someone we can trust come in and pitch the 9th inning of a game we're leading. Knebel is really good in those situations, but with him out of the lineup, I'd really prefer to see Jeffress in the save situation than Barnes. If the club wants to save Hader to be the "bullpen ace" then so be it...but I hate to see us losing when we have the lead in the 9th inning.
  17. Prince Fielder hit 319 HRs with 1028 RBI, despite an injury shortened career. I don't know that he's a lock for the Hall, but I think he ought to be in the discussion.
  18. RYAN BRAUN IS ON PACE FOR 81 HOME RUNS THIS SEASON! (Sorry for the all-caps; just didn't get to break out that bit yesterday.)
  19. Looking forward to a season's worth of agonizing over every runner stranded at 3rd with less than 2 outs, and whether every close loss will cost us a playoff spot. Outside of the agony of fandom, this offense should be fun to watch for a full 162.
  20. Spring Hopes Attorney.
  21. Win/Loss: 86-76 Playoffs: Wild Card Highest Level: NLDS ASG Reps: Arcia, Yelich, Shaw, Knebel Offensive Player of the Year: Cain Pitcher of the Year: Davies Most Surprising: Yelich is going to love hitting in Miller Park. Most Disappointing: Jimmy Nelson, because he'll either try to rush the injury recovery and have a setback, or his return to the rotation will be repeatedly delayed. (No insider knowledge here...it's just expectation management for an injured Brewers starter)
  22. Graham is a "big" move, based on prior performance...but I don't know that he has the capacity to stretch the field vertically at this point in his career, which is the Packers' biggest need. It's the same discussion MLB is having now: Is the player worth the money they're going to make? MLB has guaranteed contracts, so it's more of an issue there; by contrast, the Packers can get salary cap relief by cutting a player like Jordy once they're no longer living up to their cap number. To maximize the value of someone like Graham, it'll be important for the Packers to find players able to "take the cover off" opposing defenses, to force the safeties to play back, creating openings in the short and intermediate routes for players like Graham (and Cobb). I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers used a late round pick (or two) looking for speed at WR, particularly if they make CB a priority on Day 1-2 of the draft.
  23. The other aspect about trading Randall now is that the Packers didn't have to make a decision on the 5th year option for the former 1st round pick. They get 3 years to see if MM can do better with Kizer than he did with Hundley (+/- restricted free agency) for what works out to basically 1 year of Damarious. ...plus they move up in the 4th and 5th rounds...which means having the top pick on Day 3 (a highly tradeable commodity). They have to draft 1-2 CBs this time around (if they don't sign a FA), but realistically they had to do that anyway. Getting their backup QB via trade also means that's one less early (day 1-2) pick they have to commit to a passer, which makes it easier to target DBs. Randall made some tremendous interceptions, but he had a lot of opportunities because teams felt comfortable throwing at him. Immaturity and stupid penalties are always going to be a thing with him until he figures out how to get out of his own way. Difficult move to assess in a vacuum, but trading 1-year of control for a lottery ticket with considerable skill and athleticism is at least justifiable, particularly after the season the franchise just went through.
  24. Excited that both Archer and Legion (an X-Men -adjacent show, from the showrunner of "Fargo") are coming back soon. The Good Place, Fresh off the Boat, and Superstore are all comedies worth your time. Game of Thrones and Stranger Things aren't coming back for a good while, but I'll certainly watch (and re-watch) them when they do. I watch a lot of TV, so there's a fair number of things sitting on my TiVo that I need to catch up with (like Bob's Burgers), gradually sit through out of a sense of obligation (X-Files), or just cut bait on (looking at you, Blindspot).
