  1. I admittedly don't know much about Morrow beyond his stat line. To those are more knowledgable, I'd be curious to hear why Morrow only has 15 games started over the past 3 seasons. From an analytical standpoint, I'm comparing Morrow against Dave Bush when we acquired him from Toronto (roughly the same age, with roughly the same # of IP in the majors). Morrow looks to be a better pure strikeout guy (9.29 k/9ip stands out), but I'd expect that number to go down if he has to dial things back and pitch 5-7 innings, rather than 1-inning spot duty. At the same time, his walk rate is high (about 5.3 bb/9ip), and I'm not as willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that going down. Finally, I have to wonder just how well an extreme flyball pitcher (0.55 gb/fb) is going to make the transition from Safeco Field to Miller Park. From the numbers, I'm not sure that Morrow is a great fit for Milwaukee.
  2. Curious about this, since I was playing Uncharted 1 last night, and may be picking up the sequel over the weekend (Toys R Us' Buy 2, Get 1 free deal is calling out to me). My major gripe with the first game (just finished the jetski sequence, if that gives you a sense of where I am), is that it forces you into so many 'shoot behind cover' sequences in which the enemies try to outflank you...either I'm not good at them, or it gets to be overkill by the 3rd wave of guys that run into the same setpiece. There are moments to the game that I've really loved (the rails shooter segment on the back of the jeep), and I really appreciate a lot of the little touches with the surround sound (particulary when your ears start ringing after a nearby grenade explosion). The firefights just make the game a bit more uneven than I like.
  3. With GH 5, Beatles Rock Band, Madden, and Halo ODST already out for a few weeks, and Uncharted 2 + Brutal Legend shipping today, I think it's safe to say that the fall videogame season is upon us. My gaming radar - Already own: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (360), Madden 10 (360), Prof. Layton and the Diabolical Box (DS) Will buy, Week 1: Assassins Creed 2 (PS3), Lego Rock Band (PS3) Will buy, Eventually: Scribblenauts (DS), Uncharted 2 (PS3 - have to finish 1 first), Rachet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time (PS3) On the periphery: Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3 / 360), Brutal Legend (PS3 / 360), whatever it is I'm forgetting about right now.
  4. I tend to give Looper a little extra credit for being the only Brewers starting pitcher to take the mound every 5th day, especially considering he played through an injury that he would have felt with every pitch delivery. I think it's safe to say that TH did likewise.
  5. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but what's TINSTAPP? It's been awhile since I've seen the term, but I believe the acronym goes "There Is No Such Thing As a Pitching Prospect." (The underlying idea is that, given the injury potential at the position, it is dangerous to assume that a pitching prospect is as projectable or as "sure" a thing as a position prospect. Someone else can feel free to correct me on this.) To throw out two more names for sleeper trades: Dave Bush and Hernan Iribarren. I don't know if the Hurricane qualifies for minor league free agency, but he's at the very least a candidate to be DFA'd off the 40-man roster to make room for Rule 5 protection. His limited ABs with the major league club at the least suggests that he isn't in the long-term plans, despite respectable (but not great) minor league numbers. I could see him being made available for a high-ceiling, low probability pitcher to the right team (Seattle?). Bush has a career ERA below 5. While last year was a bad year, and the Brewers will likely go in another direction if the opportunity presents itself, the guy still has some value for a back-of-the-rotation starter.
  6. I own a Ford Escape myself, and my only real gripe is that I bought it before they started to add all the gagdgety features (no Snyc....not even an auxilliary jack for my mp3 player). 4 cylinder w/ "4 wheel drive" (works like AWD, from my very limited understanding), gets 21 / 24 (hwy) mpg, and has enough cargo space to meet my needs.
  7. If not Trevor, than who? Carlos V. didn't do anything to win the job, Weathers is only a year younger than Hoffman, and DiFelice tired out by August. Coffey's numbers were above average, and I think he comes closest to any of the remaining options for having "that closer mentality," but I'd much rather keep him in a setup role.
  8. Isn't "Big Time Arena Football" an oxymoron?
  9. Woot-off is live again; let the un-necessary punctuation commence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. The odd thing about Sunday's attendance: when I ordered my tickets, the very first day single-game tickets were available, I could not get 4 seats together in the terrace level or in the bleachers. We ended up buying seats on the loge level (section 215, as mentioned in the game thread) at a higher price than I usually spend on a game. Does anyone else recall having the same issue when trying to buy late-season tickets? I'm honestly wondering whether the club withheld some sections, so they could "re-sell" later on if the Brewers were in the playoff chase. Can't shake the feeling that I was 'upsold' on the tickets by the ballclub; while I have zero gripes about my seat or the game itself, it's still bothering me a little. It may also have been a contributing cause to the weak ticket sales (which was, admittedly, the poorest-attended bobblehead day I can remember).
  11. People on my right kept looking in my direction during the game. After a few double takes I realized they were looking past me at the press box TVs, which were showing the Packers. So, bjkrautk, how close to 217 do you sit? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gifNot a season ticket holder, so my family jumps from area to area with each individual game. We were in 215 yesterday, 19 rows up. The TV with the Packer game on was on the other side of the aisle; close enough to see all the players and even jersey numbers, but not close enough to see the score.
  12. As someone who gets tickets to all the bobblehead days, this wasn't a bad one to go out on. - Gallardo's last start, plus the chance to applaud him coming off the field after his 200 and 201st strikeout. - A shutout win. - Prince being honored before the game for the RBI record, with Coop coming out of the Houston dugout to congratulate him. - A titanic bomb (455') of a homer by the big man. Had the Packer game in one ear for most of the game....and I could see a replay of any of the big plays, since my family could see into the press box from our seats. It felt good to know I was watching the right game.
  13. Probably because a player capable of a .821 does have value at 3b. Hardy's 2008 OPS would have ranked 12th in MLB among 3rd basemen this season had he been able to duplicate it. Among qualified 3Bs in 2008, he would have ranked 9th. Obviously, those numbers have greater value at shortstop than at third base, since the position is more defense-oriented. To say that he doesn't have any value at another position doesn't actually make it true.
  14. I would assume that ESPN/ABC pays to broadcast WNBA games so they can continue to broadcast NBA games. So far as I can tell, they don't promote the bundling of the leagues publicly....but I very much doubt it is coincidence that both leagues broadcast rights run through the 2015-2016 season. (Admittedly, though, I don't care, as I don't watch nearly as much ESPN as I did a decade ago.)
  15. Not to make light of the injuries suffered by the Mayor, but....it's 2009, who still uses a pipe for this sort of thing? Were there no knives or guns available? ...did he usually carry a pipe with him, or did he borrow it from Col. Mustard after a meeting in the Conservatory?
  16. 1. Dr. Doom - Marvel Comics (...just not the guy from the Fantastic Four movies) 2. Q - Star Trek: TNG 3. Benjamin Linus - Lost 4. Kefka - Final Fantasy VI (you left out Video games!) 5. Dr. Horrible - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (...and web videos!) 6. Commodus - Gladiator (Joaquin Phoenix's character) 7. The Joker - DC Comics / Movies 8. Rosco P. Coltrane - Dukes of Hazzard 9. Ted Thompson - Green Bay Packers Honorable Mention to Deadpool (Marvel Comics...again not the one from the movie) who's become more of a mercenary than a true villain.
  17. I can't quote the article, since it's behind the pay wall, but I can tell you that Olney doesn't provide any sources in the column, and is just speculating.(My evil Twin, on the other hand, says Hall may be looking to drive a mercury Mariner automobile to his next Metropolitan destination.)
  18. Not to mention, Branyan plays 1b for the Mariners....which wouldn't be much of an option in Milwaukee.
  19. J.J. Hardy Pre-All Star Game: .680 OPSPost ASG: .611 OPS ....I don't think J.J. has isolated the root cause, here.
  20. I'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Baconator" at Wendys yet. I don't get it often (as 2 jr. bacon cheeseburgers cost less, and I'm usually cheap when it comes to fast food...it's kinda the point, IMO), but it has all the components of my ideal burger. Not a big fan of Culvers butterburgers, because they grill the life out of them; if you've ever had one without the lettuce and tomato, they're just too dry.
  21. Maybe next time, Prince should turn his batting helmet around and swing right handed, if he's worried about getting hit by a guy. I'm sure Kruk would approve then. If you don't like the way ESPN covers baseball....stop watching. Eventually, they'll get it.
  22. How amazing is it that this happened one year - to the day - of the Fielder / Parra incident last year? (Maybe we should just sit Prince on 8/4/2010?) FWIW, the Brewers won 8 in a row following that display; let's hope something similar happens here. While I understand the unwritten rules regarding protecting your star players....the Dodgers are practically admitting that the HBP was intentional, which should be grounds for a 2-3 game suspension for Mota. I have my doubts it will happen, but we'll see.
  23. Yeah, but aren't there guys in the minors that are comparable to Vargas? Or better? I'm sure there are.....there just aren't guys in the minors that would require less to acquire than a AAAA-level* utility infielder who is clearly not in the club's long-term future. (*- in Rottino's defense, he's never had enough time with the big club to prove he's not just a AAAA player. However, if the Brewers organization thought better of him, he would have received more than 1 plate appearance during the September run last year. He also wouldn't have been DFA'd and granted minor league free agency back in February.) While having the Racine native in the system was a nice story, his long-term value to the franchise is minimal. Vargas, while not a great pitcher, has pitched well for the Brewers in the past, and has effective control (about a 2:1 K/BB rate over the last 3 seasons, including his time as a starter in Milwaukee). Ironically, if Rottino had been DFA'd back in 2008 to free up room on the 40-man roster, Vargas may have been the one to stick around in the Brewers organization (and probably would have made the rotation over Burns). I don't remember there being a lot of collective joy at letting a decent (albeit-back-of-the-rotation) starting pitcher walk during that off-season. If he can come in, and stretch out to the point that he's pitching 6 mediocre innings (4.5-5.5 ERA), that will be better than what we've been getting out of the back of the rotation now. I don't exactly see the downside here.
