  1. The more I think about it....Adam Dunn not knowing who J.P. Ricciardi is....kinda proves J.P.'s point. Wouldn't you want to know a little bit about the 30 guys who may be getting ready to pay you handsomely as soon as you hit the market? It's not like Ricciardi just got the job yesterday.
  2. I actually got Odell Jones' autograph after a game ~ 20 years ago. I'm not much of an autograph hound, but I managed to get Rob Deer's autograph on the same day. (Really wish I knew what happened to that ball; I think it's packaged away somewhere at my parents' house.)
  3. ITP Homer! Prince does it again!!!
  4. The one thing that does make me question his commitment to playing baseball is that he's been atrocious defensively. You have to be pretty bad at defense to be moved off of 1b; if Dunn had shown the same level of commitment as someone like Prince Fielder, chances are he'd still be at first (where that 6-6 frame actually provides an advantage).
  5. Potential GMs take note: this is why you never talk about players on other teams. If you want them, it's tampering; and even if you don't, it's going to come back to bite you. Alex Rios' 150 OPS point dropoff from the prior two seasons (and a 100 point drop from Aaron Hill) is killing the Blue Jays offense right now. Especially since those two are the only position players on the Jays roster below age 29. They don't need Adam Dunn; they need Adam Dunn circa 2004. (Sidenote: At least Rolen is playing right around the .360/.440 line I was hoping for when the Brewers trade rumors were out there.)
  6. I try not to look at quality starts in a vacuum, since one start is nothing to be overly proud of. If your expectation is that the pitcher should put up a QS every time they take the mound, then what you really care about is QS% (or, how often they actually deliver a quality start when they take the mound). It's more telling (In My Opinion) to know how often a starting pitcher fails to deliver a quality start....as it tends to filter out pitchers with otherwise good peripheral numbers who either wear out a bullpen (Parra's 4 QS in 14 starts) or are prone to the "Big Inning" like Dave Bush (5 QS in 12 starts). CV had 3 QS in 9 starts before his demotion, split between both ends of the spectrum. By contrast: Ben Sheets has 9 QS in 13 starts; Jeff Suppan has 8 QS in 14 starts. McClung is 3-for-5 in delivering a QS (with the two non-quality starts coming in his first two starts while building up his pitch counts). Just to wind up the list, Gallardo was 3-for-3 in delivering Quality Starts before his injury. Unfortunately, I don't know of any site that actually tracks QS%. (ESPN doesn't even include the QS stat in their profiles anymore, which is a pain, since they have been my go-to site for years now.) If nothing else, it's a measure of consistent performance....which is the first thing I want to look for in a starting pitcher.
  7. Just to point it out, I was at a game last year when Prince fouled a ball off the windows above the Terrace level seating down the first base line (might have been against the Marlins). It was the most insane thing I think I've ever seen at a game (besides "The Maniac" of course....whatever happened to that guy?). Sorry to temporarily disrupt the Branyan man-love; you may now recommence gushing.
  8. The implication, implicit as it may be, is that when your family runs out of Klements....they run out of love. Don't let your family fall into dysfunction; buy Klements sausages. (Yeah, I hate that ad.) The Piggly Wiggly tailgate tips are annoying as well, but mainly due to a certain thread in the Political forum...
  9. A really young version of Mike and the Mechanics.
  10. IMO, Crocs are the fannie pack of the '00s. You can probably still get away with wearing them right now, but the tide will turn over the next year or two....so don't be surprised when people start making fun of them.
  11. Election night isn't going to be the same without him manning the whiteboard. His personal politics tilted one-way, but that didn't stop him from asking the tough questions to his guests, regardless of affiliation. That's a character trait that's all too rare in beltway journalism. I always tried to watch Meet the Press on Sunday mornings; he'll most certainly be missed. (Kinda makes me wish the Bills would've won one of those Super Bowls for him...)
  12. Funny how the people who posted before the Dillon AB agreed it was the right move....and the critical comments came after the AB. (Edit: for the record, before I get called on it, craigharmann was somewhat critical before the AB....he snuck one in on the bottom of the page.)
  13. I usually don't watch Brewers Live before the game, but the studio hostess (Marney Gellner) working with Cirillo right now is not smooth. She had three items to talk about in one segment....and ended up blending them all together. Unless her teleprompter just died, it was pretty brutal. What happened to the other guy I've seen Cirillo work with in the post-game?
  14. Agreeing with the "If not Suppan, then who?" crowd. Suppan is a very average starting pitcher. Almost definitionally so, in fact: his career ERA+ is 101. I don't know whether his ERA last year, and uncharacteristically high BABIP (.324, .024 higher than his career #s) were a product of the Brewers' defense or not (his FIP is actually higher in '08 than it was in '07), but he seems to be bouncing back quite nicely. Moreover, Suppan is astoundingly consistent: over the previous 9 seasons, he's only once failed to pitch 190 or more innings....he only got to 188 IP in 2004. If a guy who's consistently around a 4 ERA, while throwing 190-200 innings a year is your # 4 starter....you've got one heck of a pitching staff.
  15. I won't have an internet connection tomorrow afternoon....I might just try to stay away from Brewerfan for a few hours when I get home and just TiVo the TV portion of the draft.
  16. Can't wait to get home later tonight to see the back-to-back HRs (including Corey's ITP homer). :D
  17. You know, McClung has looked pretty darn good as a starter, aside from the one inning against the Braves (when he just ran out of gas). No walks tonight, against the four strikeouts.
  18. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but Gabe Gross' OPS with the Devil Rays is still on the wrong side of .800, and his season-long OPS is still .727. (Considering he's largely lost playing time in RF to Hinske, and only starts once or twice a week....I think the reports of Gross' performance over the past week tend to distort his perception in a 'grass is always greener' sort of way. Gabe had 43 AB's for the Brewers in the first 20 games of the season....and 41 AB's for the Rays in the entire month of May.)
  19. Ryan Braun, 2007: 112 games, 248 total chances, 26 errors (.895 F%, .697 ZR) Bill Hall (3b), 2008: 50 games (47 starts), 138 total chances, 13 errors (.906 F%, .788 ZR) I don't think people have put into context just how bad Hall has been on defense, to go with his hitting struggles. He's actually on a pace to have more errors than Braun had last year (on a per-game basis), only in part because he's had more chances to fail. I'll spot Hall defenders that Billy's range means he probably gets to more balls than Braun did (thus the higher number of chances / inning)....but I don't think it was Braun's range that was the problem. That being said, I don't think it's coincidental that Hall's complaint came within days of watching Joe Dillon start at second base. Would he prefer not to be a super-sub, if he can't hack it everyday at one position?
  20. 16 - Jason Castro, C, Stanford (not a flash pick, but a pretty safe pick to reach and stick in the majors) 32 - Brett DeVall, LHP, HS (Florida; I'll take the 6-4 lefty with 3 pitches...even if he is a high school kid) 35 - James Darnell, 3b/rf, S. Carolina (If the Brewers have shown a tendency, it's to draft power hitters and see if they'll stick at the hot corner...Hart, Braun, Gamel, and maybe one more? I'm guessing Gillaspie will be gone at this point; otherwise, he'd be the pick here.) 53 - Zach Putnam, RHP, Michigan 54 - Aaron Weatherford, CL/RHP, Miss. St. (or St. Clair, if he's still here this late in the draft....if both are gone, Kyle Long would be a nice pick at this point too). 62 - Ryan Flaherty, SS/3b, Vanderbilt Granted, there's virtually no chance that the Brewers take 5 college guys with their 6 picks, but it's my mock draft.
  21. If the Brewers think that the best way to get 30+ Starts out of Ben Sheets is to pitch him every 5th day, rather than every 5th game, I'm all for it. I'm guessing, however, that given his recent injury history, the team would rather do everything within reason to protect that throwing arm; if he gets hurt, not only is any shot at the playoffs gone, but they lose the chance to trade him for value. Is the chance that he might still be around to pitch 2-3 additional times over the course of the season really worth the injury risk?
  22. I can't even begin to comprehend the number of hours that you must put into HS and college scouting, Colby. That so much of that work shows up on a site I would be going to anyway makes it all the more perfect. In short, you rock!
  23. I have to guess that ~ 50% of the fans in the stadium won't know enough about Davis' time post-Brewers to know about his beating Cancer....so I kind-of doubt he'll get the kind of applause that warrants.
