  1. Maybe you can get 106.1 FM in, out of Antigo. It's a shot in the dark, but may be worth a try.
  2. The Hardy "range" thread. There was some pretty good statistical discussion on that one.
  3. A mod needs to edit that last sentence.
  4. Hardball Times had an article about him the other day: www.hardballtimes.com/mai...tangibles/
  5. Bill just referenced the "eye of the tiger". That made my day.
  6. I did, at 3:00. Should've bolded it, I guess. www.usatoday.com/sports/b...-stats.htm I would suggest going to the "My Control Center" thing, clicking on "Account Preferences", and changing the "Number of Replies Per Page" to a huge number. I believe mine is set at 10,000. This way you don't have to read through pages and pages of posts, it also cuts down of page views.
  7. In an attempt to be agreeable with most here, I could see Hardy at SS and Hall at 3B since Hall is the better athlete and could make the adjustment to 3B better than Hardy. But that means we lose Branyan's power or Helms' much improved bat this season, also. I'd actually prefer to see Hall as a utility/platoon guy with Branyan. Cirillo will likely be back, but it doesn't mean he has to play a lot, he could be a 25th man and I don't think he'd mind it a bit.
  8. That is valid, SoCal, but what I was really pointing out was that Hardy has hit well for more than a month. If you use Casey's jumpoff point, Hall has a .792 OPS over the time and Hardy is at .788. Hall's is helped by his SLG, while Hardy has walked all year, and will likely continue to. That's really my main beef with Hall, as you obviously know quite well, and the reason I like Hardy. EDIT: What Danzig said is also right, obviously. The front offices have much more advanced ways of judging their players' defensive talents. Toby said that a while back, too, but I think it kind of was missed.
  9. We think range factor stinks as a defensive metric. I also think quite a few of us think AVG stinks as an offensive metric. Though it's been more than a month that Hardy has hit well, compare the two since the ASB: Hall (205 AB): .273/.321/.405, 3 HR, 48 K/15 BB Hardy (153 AB): .301/.361/.490, 6 HR, 18 K/14 BB
  10. Ther's no SABR manager stat or anything I'd say also that the managers I like a little more than Yost are guys like Macha or Tracy, and I think they have a lot more pressure exerted on them by the front office than Yost does. Not to take this in a completely different direction, because I do think this is a really good discussion, but I think the importance of field managers in general is overstated.
  11. Offensive metrics are in a much more controlled environment. They've also been around for much longer. Many of the defensive metrics are in their relative infancy when compared to things like OBP.
  12. Santana is the best pitcher in baseball. Peavy is close. Felix will be. There's no way I'd take Oswalt over any of them. Healthy Prior doesn't really exist anymore thanks to the lack of a Smart Dusty. There's no way I'd take Colon or Sabathia over Sheets, and I doubt that I'd take Pedro at this stage in his career. Halladay really isn't "injury prone" per se, it's not like he's had arm injuries. They've been freak injuries like being hit with a batted ball. Before that he was the most durable pitcher in the game.
  13. It also has Jeter listed at 7th. I'd agree with Casey, ZR or UZR are a much better stat defensively than is RF. It has Eckstein at 16th and Jeter at 19th.
  14. Hall plays behind the same pitchers that Hardy does, though, doesn't he? Certainly, but he doesn't play behind an extreme groundballer like Mulder like Eckstein does - this is why the contention made in USA Today that Hardy has the worst range is a joke. The Cardinals, as a team, have a 1.74 GB/FB ratio - by far and away the highest in either league (the next closest is 1.52). The Brewers sit at 1.11, second lowest in the NL. So, I guess the idea that Hall has better range is certainly true, but the idea that Hardy has the worst range in baseball is a joke. Also, just for reference, the USA Today article is here: www.usatoday.com/sports/b...-stats.htm they completely misunderstand most of the other stats they show, as well.
  15. Guys that play SS on teams that feature more GB pitchers are going to have a higher RF. Hardy has played behind FB pitchers like Ohka, Capuano, Sheets, etc. and hasn't had as many chances because of this.
  16. Are you saying that the rest of us are able to post longer messages than you can? Have you tried copying and pasting from a word processor or text editor? Yes. I usually have to edit my posts multiple times until I reach the limit of space I can take up, usually a couple of paragraphs. Apparently several people have had this problem: p103.ezboard.com/fbugsfrm...=840.topic
  17. Is it possible to do "merged threads", where a mod can merge posts from seperate threads that are on virtually the same topic? This would seem to help clean up clutter. A good example of threads that could be merged is the couple steroids ones currently on the first page of threads. Also, being able to have a bigger archive would be nice. Don't know how that could be accomplished, though, as I'm not very up on these sorts of things. As long as the new board allows be to write long posts unlike now with the stupid EzBoard problem I'm still having.
  18. Hey, why take a pitch! This is pretty disgusting. Maddux would have thrown as many pitches in this game if the Brewers did nothing but take three strikes every AB.
  19. I smile every time I see that name at the top of a lineup card. And wonder who will manage the Cubs next year and if they will realize that Matt Murton should lead off.
  20. Is Hardy still a lock to go to the AFL? The other night, Powell asked him and JJ said he was tired. Then he hurt his toe the next day. I think it might be wisest just to give him the fall off if he's not at or near 100%. Obviously there isn't really an injury concern like there would be with a pitcher, but if he's not really in peak shape, what good does it do him?
  21. I'd have posted the lineups earlier, but am incapable due to some EzBoard issues. Here's a link to the pretty lineups: www.tickertech.com/cgi/?a...004.161901
  22. Baseball Prospectus has them as near equals as well, with Robinson at a 107 "Rate" and Santo at 103. Also, if you look at Robinson/Santo in comparison to Boyer according to FR, Boyer destroys Robinson and Santo. He also takes "Range", with Santo second. I guess it's just preference, but I like Fielding Runs. I don't have the "Historical Abstract" here, but who does James have as the #1 3B? Boyer? EDIT: Also in Baseball Encyclopedia, Santo is ranked 20th in Fielding Wins, Boyer 13th, and Robinson 87th.
  23. I am curious though that you think a guy as respected in the stat community as Bill James who actually saw them both play, could be fooled by 'face time' I don't take everything James says as gospel, or anything. I think Pete Palmer is every bit as respected as James within the stats "community", if not moreso. It's not like I think Santo was head and shoulders above Robinson defensively, but that they are equals. He was head and shoulders above with the bat, and I think all-in-all a superior player. EDIT: This isn't to say that Robinson doesn't belong in the Hall.
  24. I even seem to recall a recent post of yours that allowed for a degree of questionability about most defensive stats. I certainly do question them, but I think that Santo and Robinson were likely near equals defensively by looking at the various measures. My whole beef is that Robinson got much more face time, thus won a bunch of Gold Gloves based on reputation, even when he was quite poor. He led the league in Palmer's FR one time - with 32 in 1967. Santo also led the league once with 31 in 1967. Santo also had 74 more for his career. Santo led the league in Palmer's "Range" seven times, Robinson twice. Santo's career mark is also better than Robinson's in this.
