  1. This begs to question - when is Mark A. starting the "regional sports network" that he talked about. Does anyone have details regarding the current deal with FSN?
  2. Here's a great article by Cyril Morong on Santo. He references Palmer's "Fielding Runs", which was the metric I referred to to say that Santo was better than Brooks Robinson. LINK But Palmer ranks Santo 4th all-time in a stat called fielding runs, with 168 (behind Schmidt, Buddy Bell and Clete Boyer). That means that Santo prevented 164 more runs that an average fielding third baseman would have over his career. So Santo is either a little better than average or great in fielding.
  3. Badger game Saturday at the same time, Packers at the same time on Sunday. That seems logical to me.
  4. I think maybe once Tomo allows someone to reach safely Prince will come in.
  5. Doesn't make much sense to take Hardy out, to me at least.
  6. Well, Tomo's looking like a pretty good one-day pickup in one of my fantasy leagues.
  7. This game is fun. The heart is back in the offense, and his name is Chad Moeller!
  8. He's a slam dunk for me, and I posted a similar thing a couple months back that I wish hadn't fallen off the board. Santo was a terrific player, who was outstanding with the glove (better than Brooks Robinson, who couldn't hit much better than average but had more attention on him, according to things like Fielding Runs and Range Factor), and hit like a corner OF at a more demanding position. Maybe his over the top persona as a broadcaster hurts him a little, but I don't think that should be used either way. It would really be a shame if he weren't inducted into the Hall.
  9. The C&C Outmaking Factory should help Cappy get #17. This is crazily optimistic for myself to say, but this is the series where the Brewers get over .500 and stay there.
  10. Branyan doesn't even do that anymore, he just swings and misses. Who'd have guessed that was coming?
  11. They're not based on simulations, they're based on play-by-play data.
  12. I don't really think the creation of that forum was for Russ (who really does much more stat stuff with tables and the like than I do) and I. Moreso it was to be abale to preserve threads that are very good and would normally get pushed off the board and lost. I think you could take the discussion of game strategy to the stats forum, as a lot of us "SABR guys" base some of our views on in-game strategy on stats - things like bunts, SB's, etc. I'm sure if you wanted to post something related to that in that forum, it could generate discussion.
  13. I doubt any system that says Johnny Damon is a "good" defensive player. Though I do think he'll be playing CF for the Yankees next year, replacing Bernie.
  14. I think at least 1/3 of a player job at the plate is to entertain the fans. And people don't pay $20 to watch somebody NOT swing. No matter how much that may or may not help a team win. How many bases loaded walks to win a game do you think are in people's top 10 baseball memories? I like to see guys not swing, if the pitches aren't strikes. I know you like Ichiro and all, but he's a rare breed, and it sure would help him to take a walk this year since hit luck seems to have taken a downturn. If nothing else, he's a posterboy for the fluctuation of batting average in comparison to walk rate. Ichiro year-by-year AVG .350 .321 .312 .372 .297 Ichiro year-by-year Iso-OB .031 .066 .040 .042 .050
  15. Were the games this weekend added to the FSN broadcast schedule?
  16. He's really dominating in the poll, that's great to see.
  17. Nick Swisher is going to be a ?great player?. Not to nitpick, as I agree with you on the all-encompassing stats for the most part, but I don't think anyone said Swisher would be "great", maybe "good", but not great. When I see him, I see Brad Wilkerson as a switch hitter, and that's a good player. A much better one than Bill Hall anyway.
  18. This is as slam dunk as it gets for me. It's an absolute joke that he's not in - I guess he's not a "winner".
  19. he has a .231 career average. Who cares about his AVG? He's on the team to hit for power, and that's what he does. Melvin obviously doesn't mind the K's, and the move to get Branyan may have been one of the best moves he has made. Also, why use FPCT as a defensive stat? A lot of the advanced metrics have his as an average or slightly above average defensive player, and I tend to agree with that.
  20. I'd trade almost anyone on the team for Adam Dunn, probably everyone but Weeks, Fielder, and Sheets.
  21. wow, this team is having a nice inning. where was this last night? They were facing a good pitcher last night. Today they face one of the worst pitchers in the league.
  22. The guy can't play. Well, it's settled then. Yeah he's played well, but he can't play.
  23. He shouldn't play against LHP, and I don't think anyone thinks he should. I think it's great and smart that he is platooned to maximize his production. The Brewers have guys that mash LHP like Cirillo and Helms and those guys should play against southpaws.
  24. J.J. Hardy has a better OBP than Hall does, even though his AVG is 45 points lower. Bill Hall had a good couple months early in the season. Since then he's been terrible: Hall before the Break (261 AB): .280/.329/.517, 13 HR, 20 BB/53 K Hall post-Break (153 AB): .255/.294/.379, 3 HR, 9 BB/35 K
  25. It's against a LHP, what did you expect. Then when they face a RHP, hopefully Branyan is back where he belongs, starting. And Hall can be where he belongs - the bench.
