  1. Kearns is also an elite defensive RF, using most metrics.
  2. I think guys along the lines of Jackson or Gwynn are all it would cost them, which really is nothing. I'd imagine the Giants kind of want to just get out of his contract. I'd bet they'll pick up at least some of the contract. I'm not sure it's a great idea, but I truly do like the chances of a 33/34 year old Winn outproducing a 39/40 year old Lofton next season. Kearns is the guy I want the most, and I think I'd rather take my chances on Gross/??? in a platoon than Winn, but there are worse things.
  3. Excellent. There's enough human error by players, they need to eliminate it from umpires. I'm hoping they can figure out an electronic strike zone in the near future, as well.
  4. Got an interesting e-mail today. Paste Magazine, which is pretty good, is following the Radiohead lead of allowing you to name your price. Only difference is that the lowest you can go is $1. Still a good deal. LINK Beginning today, and continuing for the next two weeks, Paste[/i]will be offering one-year subscriptions, and readers - yes, you and you and you - can name their own price! New subscribers can sign up, and loyal subscribers can renew online at PasteMagazine.com for a minimum payment of $1, though all are encouraged to pay what they think the subscription is worth. Anyone paying more than the $19.95 Paste[/i] typically offers for a one-year (11-issue) subscription will be thanked in print in a future issue of the magazine.
  5. You know, that's not that awful of a trade if your buddy made it up. Quite even. I think Emil Brown kind of stinks, but he'd be alright as a 4th or 5th OF.
  6. Utley is one of the best players in the league at this point, so him being about to turn 29 doesn't really scare me.
  7. I would love to see the DH in the NL. Like Ennder said - how is watching the pitcher hit entertaining? Bunting is never done by someone other than a pitcher, anyhow, so bemoaning the loss of the sacrifice is kind of wrong, I think. Besides - it's harder for an idiot manager to screw up, that's especially relevant as a Brewers fan.
  8. Didn't Jim Leyland bail on the Rockies after like one year because they sucked too much?
  9. Bukowski's "Post Office" is primarily non-fiction. For some reason, I expected Chuck Bukowski recommendations coming from the dude with the Waits avatar, not Hacksaw Jim Duggan. All kinds of Bukowski is great.
  10. One who feels a rebuilding team shouldn't be managed by someone who likes established veterans. This is the guy that put Albert Pujols on his opening day roster after he had all of 14 AB's above A-Ball, and there's been lots of examples of him playing young players. IMO, no manager puts their players in a favorable situation more often than Tony La Russa, I would want him to manage a rebuilding team because of that. Someone who likes to have good role models as a manager. Perhaps one who isn't arrested for drunk driving becuase he was asleep at the wheel at a stop light. To me, this is an isolated incident. I had never heard of anything like this being a pattern in his life. All the charity work he had done, etc. outweighs one stupid mistake he made in terms of him being a role model. He correctly called it an embarrassment and apologized profusely. Someone who feels the rest of baseball managers from all era's were right to put the pitcher in the 9 hole. I think he's hit the pitcher 8th less than 100 times in his managerial career. I give him credit for trying something different.
  11. A People's History of the United States I would say probably the best historical book I have ever read.
  12. What GM wouldn't be on board with Tony LaRussa managing their team?
  13. 8 XBH in 41 AFL AB's without even having a full professional season under his belt. Pretty solid.
  14. He looks super smooth off the dribble. Wow. Kind of wishing I had gone to the GB game, I had gone to the last two, but didn't feel like it this year.
  15. Posada - Yankees Pettitte - retirement A-Rod - Red Sox Mo - Yankees Clemens - retirement
  16. Bill Tupper, creator of Tupperware.
  17. Don't forget Speier, too. Not that he has amazing stuff, but he closed for a lot of his minor league career, so he has quite a great deal of experience in higher leverage spots.
  18. Sam makes a good point about how the Rockies scored more runs this past year, so it's not like they're all about pitching and defense. Yes, but it's the playoffs, so everything has to be boiled down to those two things. Look at the White Sox of '05 as another example. I do agree that in the playoffs, though, the late inning reliever takes on greater importance than they do in the regular season. Bullpens are a huge, huge part of playoff success. That being said, I'd still rather be the Indians or Red Sox, because I think they have better offenses, and they can both pitch fairly well. I think having great defense, on the other hand, is more beneficial in the regular season, over a long period of time. Obviously, it helps to have a Troy Tulowitzki in the middle of the diamond any time of the season, but over the course of five games defense can't "save" enough runs to make up for a guy that would have a terrible bat and great glove.
  19. No. It's real.
  20. I wonder if this has any bearing at all on whether or not they pick up Dunn's option. With Krivsky likely to be fired after this season, you have to think he's going to do everything in his power to make a run for 75 wins.
  21. Sweet!
  22. Has an account been set up for cluzinski yet?
  23. Yeah, I've been following this for a while. Phillip Morris sent me a mailer the other day to contact my state senator, etc. I smoke about a carton a week or so, but I buy my cigarettes at a Native American gas station that doesn't have tax on tobacco, so a carton of Marlboro's right now costs me about $28. I'm not really sure how they are going to be affected by this. I'm also not that certain that it's going to pass, anyhow. It's looking like right now there's a good chance it won't. The assembly almost certainly won't pass it.
  24. Cigarettes Music Soda, which I guess is my substitute for coffee on that list I also have a blueberry muffin out of the vending machine at work every morning for breakfast I never go out to bars, so when I do drink a few beers, I don't pay that much. I buy maybe two twelve packs a month.
  25. Someone was big on him, brettac maybe? Maybe it was a few people. Wasn't totally shocking that he did well, but he did fly under the radar. Yeah, that's why I mentioned him. I think I had him as my avatar for like 6 months and on multiple occasions. I'm really glad he got the shot that's been coming to him for a long time, and he had a great year. He even made 9 plays out of his zone in 463 innings in the OF this year!
