  1. The entire league scores more in the first inning than any other inning. This is the time you're most likely to get to a starting pitcher, before they are fully warm and settle in. Aces seem to especially give up a decent chunk of their runs in the first inning compared to others.
  2. He is incredibly slow, so I didn't even think he was dogging it until I saw the replay. He wouldn't have beat it out, anyhow, most likely, but I guess I still have a problem with him not running hard. Normally I don't really care if a guy doesn't run hard on a routine play, pop-up (like Hardy did when he could have been at second on the ball Lopez dropped), etc - 99% of the league doesn't (Eric Byrnes the other night being an exception on the play Mench fell down on). But when a guy has a chance to beat out a GIDP, he has to run hard.
  3. The thing that is good is that players now get a full pension as soon as they come to the bigs.
  4. Jenkins has had three .900 OPS seasons and one of .888. He's had an OPS+ of over 100 for every year since '99. He's been one of the best players in Brewers history. It's tough to say that he never reached his potential. Even though it was only a .500 season, the guy carried the team on his broken pelvis for the second half of 2005 to that .500 record while the guy everyone loved, Carlos Lee, tanked. I don't think he'll be back next year, but he's been far from disappointing or a letdown.
  5. Brett - you cant take for granted that the Crew will be in this situation again next year. Things can happen. Prince can get hurt, Big Ben can hurt a shoulder, someone might break a law or get in a freak accident. We are RIGHT THERE now, what are we waiting for? I'm just not willing to mortgage the future. Maybe if the team was full of 30+ guys, but it's not. The probability is that they will be good for the next 4-5 years. I know there is a freak chance that something could happen, but you can't run the team in fear of something out of your control. Besides, the way they are playing right now they could definitely win the wild card if they don't win the division.
  6. They don't really need to make moves to keep up with the Cubs. They're good enough to win the division as is. This is the first year of their run, they aren't in any hurry. I'm fine if they just stand pat and ride it out with what they have, and I get the feeling that's pretty much what will happen.
  7. That's a pretty good trade. I agree that Nady is nothing special, but Marte is a guy that would have definitely helped the Brewers. He's a lot tougher on LHB's than Scott Eyre or Ohman are.
  8. Throw the next one at the wall and see if he sticks. I'm a proponent of just going through as many bullpen guys as possible until they catch lightning in a bottle. Heck, they even got semi-effectiveness out of Chris Spurling for a while there. If they feel they need to make a trade, by all means go for it, but I'm not a fan of giving up anything of substance for a guy that pitches so little. They really have a solid bullpen, just not a good 7th reliever, and I don't think any team has one.
  9. Yeah, I don't normally "vent" very much, and I have a pretty thick skin, but this one made me pretty mad. I'm pretty much over it already, but I just can't stand Estrada so it's still gnawing at me a little.
  10. RyDogg - I wasn't referring to your post. There was someone that vented that his job is to hit RHP's, not bail out on an AB against one. He said he acknowledged that he's losing it or something along those lines.
  11. Ripping Jenkins for getting HBP is reminiscent of Yankees fans hating on Boggs for drawing walks when he's supposed to be an "RBI guy". That was a great job of getting on base and extending the inning. but that being said, Estrada really isn't worth what his stats show. He refuses to take pitches, he's slower than Eddie Perez, he's awful on defense, and he can't throw out a base stealer to save a life. His .285 batting average is ridiculously hollow, and he hits for only marginal power. You're preaching to the choir, man. This was pretty much my mantra the entire offseason. I'm a "stats" guy, but Estrada is a guy that only looks good in a boxscore. When you watch him play, you realize he isn't very good.
  12. I said it the other night, too, but if Weeks was a white guy, you'd hear announcers all over the league praising his grittiness. He runs hard, he breaks up DP's, hits catchers, get HBP, always has a dirty uniform - he's the definition of a "scrappy" player.
  13. As crazy as it may sound, I was actually screaming for Ned to PH Gwynn for Estrada. I said "at least he won't GIDP". Then I saw the infield in, I had a brief thought that Estrada could be successful. But, alas, Estrada still = Nada.
  14. I despise Johnny Estrada with every fiber of my being. Always have, always will.
  15. I just want to extend a warm "welcome back" to Chris Capuano.
  16. He's a corner OF (and that may be debatable) and he hasn't really hit for power since he was in low-A ball. I know the hamate injury played a part in that. Then he picked up his walk rate, which he didn't have when he could mash. I think a lot of people thought he was a better prospect than he actually was. There was a lot of heat for him because he broke the organizational RBI record, and at the time he did that there wasn't a whole lot to be excited about in the farm system.
  17. 62% chance of a winning road trip is pretty awesome.
  18. I think that's right on, Patrick. Though it will be a few days after the doubleheader before Gross reaches 10 days in AAA, but still in time for Parra to make his next start down there on normal rest.
  19. Steve Phillips said on Baseball Tonight that the Brewers would sign and not trade Carlos Lee. He was way wrong, though. I mean, it's Steve Phillips. They were never going to re-sign Lee, I don't think they were even negotiating with him by this late in the year last year.
  20. Yeah, Harang is just excellent. The wins are misleading, but he's been a very good pitcher for three years now. One of the best in the NL. The Brewers have roughed him up in the past, though.
  21. Clement's bat is good enough that he doesn't have to be a catcher. So he won't be. They could trade Johjima if they want Clement to catch, too, he's nothing special. Sexson has been abysmal at 1B, and Vidro is garbage at DH. One of those guys who move, not the young pre-arby guy that they drafted two years ago with the third pick. The Brewers really didn't have any more of a reason to trade Overbay than Seattle does here... Yeah, the Brewers don't have a DH spot at their disposal. That's a huge difference.
  22. are they gonna rotate cust andd piazza, or will cust sit when piazza plays?? I think they're going to find as many AB's as they can for Cust. Cust has obviously been terrific, and they're going to see what they have in him. He's actually played a dozen games or so in the OF and hasn't embarassed himself, but he's obviously a DH. The A's are going to move a lot of guys. Probably anyone other than Swisher, Cust, Buck, or Suzuki is available among position players. But who the hell wants Bobby Crosby (biggest. disappointment. ever.)? I'd rather have Bubba Crosby.
  23. I'd guess he'll just end up being the DH in Seattle, catching a little here and there, maybe playing some 1B - like Victor Martinez does. I don't think the Mariners have any reason to trade away a guy like him.
  24. Buck's a latter day Costas. Neither one of them deserved the jobs they got when they got them. There's so many great minor league announcers and announcers for other MLB teams that have worked hard for a long time and never get the shot that Buck got because of nepotism and Costas got for who knows what reason.
