  1. Some of the guys were really going at it, some were just there because they are expected to come off the bench. It certainly didn't look staged.
  2. Khris Davis only has 1/4 of a year in AAA under his belt so he could definitely use more playing time there. Gindl was pretty much awful last year at AAA so I'd think he would benefit from more time there unless they are ready to proclaim him a future 4th OF and then I guess it doesn't matter if he ends up as the 5th man.
  3. The 5th OF is a kiss of death for a prospect. No way in heck should he even spend 1 second considering a prospect who might actually start for the team in that role. Schafer as a 4th OF is fine since they see more playing time and he is already 26 so he doesn't have much time left as a prospect but no way should Davis or Gindl make this roster unless they plan on playing 1B while Hart is out.
  4. They believed the same thing last year and how did that turn out? There is no reason to think the bullpen is in good shape.
  5. Well Harang and Lilly have no value to anyone that isn't in a pitchers park at this point. Capuano is the only guy in the bunch with any real value.
  6. It has been amazing, better than a large portion of the regular season in real baseball.
  7. Those would be the same people who said before last season started that it was a strength. You just have no clue with a bullpen what's going to happen. No, it is the same guy who said the bullpen was going to be awful last year. There was reason to think it would be good going into last year. It was epically bad because the two guys who should have been at least decent were as bad as the rest who I knew would be bad. Bradenhop showed a huge bump in ERA last year but no skills to support it, he is likely still the 4 ERA junk RP he has been for a while now. Gozelanny is pretty much the same, still screams 4+ ERA guy. Gonzalez at least has some skills though you never know what you are going to get from him year to year. Jim Henderson is nothing to be excited about. Olmstead is certainly intriguing I'll give you that. Axford is the only real hope for the bullpen imo. He showed much much better skills than results last year especially late in the year. As long as 20% of his flyballs don't keep turning into HR he should be a decent closer. It isn't set in stone or anything but in a bullpen of retreads coming off most likely lucky career years he is the one guy I can at least have some hope for. The lineup should be top notch. I think the rotation will surprise people as long as it stays healthy. The bullpen is still one of the worst in baseball.
  8. Melvin is too smart for this. Axford is the one guy on the roster who should rebound. The rest of the bullpen is pretty much awful. He should be trying to pick up arms, not trade the best arm.
  9. Stick Greinke in that park and we are talking about him the same way people talk about guys like King Felix so I'll go with him. I'm not sure if Cain would still be an "ace" if he hadn't happened to get put in the perfect park for him.
  10. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/white-sox-to-extend-chris-sale.html Considering we have young pitching coming and these kind of deals will set the market for early extensions I'm curious what others think? I think given Sale's path that this is extremely risky for the team. I mean it was less than a year ago they were moving him to the bullpen because they were worried about his health.
  11. The balls have been studied at length. Here are some examples. http://deadspin.com/5937432/was-mlbs-juiced-era-actually-a-juiced+ball-era The biggest spike in HR were exactly the years they pointed to for juiced balls. All of the big HR seasons by Bonds, Sosa etc were within those years etc. The steroid era was much longer than just that short peak. There simply was more to it than steroids.
  12. They have only made the playoffs 13 times compared to our last 3. When you think about it that is only 1 away from being the same number~.
  13. Always is a pretty strong word. They have missed the playoffs 3 out of the past 6 years and should have missed it that 7th year when they won the World Series after 83 wins. The Cardinals always find a competitive team but they have their ups and downs too. They have a ton of young talent coming up so I could see them take a step back for a season or two if some of these old guys finally break down, and then have another big surge of being a dominant team.
  14. But again you just ignored everything else I said. The balls were without a doubt different and probably the major driving force in all of this. The pitching was just awful during those years as well. When baseball expanded in the 60s there was a 6 year spike in HR. It expanded again in 67 and we saw another spike in HR for about 6 years. It expanded again in 77 and we again saw a spike in HR. 93 expansion had a spike as well. Why would we not expect a chunk of this being because of the 1998 expansion? From 1998 to 2001 they used new balls and then the balls were changed in 2002. Those huge years were right in the peak of the expansion spike and the new balls. Steroid testing didn't start until 2006 yet HR were already going down before that and didn't see a sharp reduction or anything once testing began. Only after the expected expansion spike was over did they start to go down just like every other expansion in baseball history. There is no doubt that anabolic steroid use helped players hit more HR. There is also absolutely no doubt that it is overblown when people say something like what you just said. If Bonds had never used steroids he still would have seen a HR spike in his age 35-39 years that would have looked odd because of other factors.
  15. He is the most vanilla announcer in baseball and that isn't always a bad thing, guys like Hawke Harrelson are just awful with their 'flair'.
  16. Seems appropriate since his style tends to make me fall asleep. Not a big loss in my book. Anyone who actually follows golf on TV or radio is a really odd duck.
  17. I'm just curious what makes you think this? We have done nothing this offseason to make me think we are "going for it". In fact the offseason suggests just the opposite. They are cautiously optimistic but want to assess the team for the future at the same time. If we were going for it we would have signed a FA pitcher for rotational depth. The team has the players to make a run at the playoffs but at the same time they really need to figure out how much of this pitching is the future and what we need to do long term.
  18. Well if they cost the same I'd take Lohse every day over Harang and it isn't even remotely close. Harang is more or less useless outside of a complete pitchers park which can hold his flyballs in. He is Lohse without the good control. But Lohse will take a pick and a big contract so I hope they don't do it.
  19. Nope, it was expected. MLB expanded twice in that time frame and expansion always comes with a bump in offense. They also moved to a new company building their baseballs of which tests proved would fly up to 40 ft farther than the old balls. Take steroids out of the equation and you would have seen an absolutely massive HR spike those years anyway. If steroids were the driving force in the increased offense it would have lasted a lot longer because testing didn't really catch on for a number of years later. Steroids played a part in the offensive explosion but it was a really minor part.
  20. This is completely crazy. Every year we go to Florida on spring break and every year half of the people we meet are from Wisconsin. Tons and tons of people from WI vacation in Florida, it is crazy how many do. I generally wear Brewers and Packers gear and I am stopped every 5 minutes with someone saying go pack or go brewers.
  21. Yeah, if he hadn't done the Melky tweet I wouldn't have even passed this on to the site. I'd have shrugged and ignored it. If he gets a 2nd one correct suddenly I'm following him on twitter~.
  22. I"d rather look into Wang myself.
  23. I actually think Axford gets a longer leash since he had his struggles last year and found a way to bounce back from it. As a manager I'd have more trust in a guy who has done that before than one struggling for the first time.
  24. There is zero proof that this is true though. All of the tests they have run on non anabolic steroids have been inconclusive on them actually helping players. So it is really hard to know how 'bad' they are. They definitely keep people at 100% for more of the season and that definitely helps players so they have a real effect on the game for sure. This isn't really true either. Joe Flacco just got $20M a year to be a league average QB. There is just as much incentive in other sports to cheat as in baseball, the cap has nothing to do with anything.
  25. That is true but lets be honest here, there has been no proof that these new steroids help performance at all, they have studied them and the results are completely inconclusive. This is not the anabolic steroid era at all. There is no proof at all that these new steroids do more than get players ready to recover from injuries faster.
