  1. There are hundreds of prospects that got off to great starts and failed, no reason to assume Lawrie isn't one of them yet. Lind is a great Toronto example of one who had great success and fell flat on his face after his big year. Lawrie will likely be a really good hitter but no reason to call him another Braun/Fielder just yet.
  2. Most people disagree about most things so that is a bad argument in general. But again I'm not going to go into too much detail because it never solves much and it will completely derail the thread. We can just leave it as I like the idea of making things more balanced, I don't like a hardcore salary cap that every team lives at. There are a bunch of different ways to balance the economy of the league and I prefer something different than a static hardcore salary cap.
  3. It would derail the thread to go into much detail but I'll just say I'm all for finding ways to create a more even playing field but a hard salary cap that every team lives at is not one of the ways I'd prefer to do it, I don't really like it in football and I think it is an even worse fit for baseball.
  4. Add an NFL style salary cap. I'd stop watching the day it was added. That is really about the only thing they could do. They could shorten games, shorten the season etc which would probably upset my traditionalist side but I would still watch. Taking the DH away from the AL would piss me off but I'd be happier than the way it is split now. They could add the DH to the NL, fix international player drafting, add a salary floor, increase revenue sharing etc and I'd love the game even more so plenty of room to improve.
  5. I consider myself a traditionalist in most areas of baseball but I'm also a realist and pitchers hitting just makes no sense these days. Even good hitters struggle to hit when they don't get to do it on a regular basis, asking a pitcher to hit at the major league level just makes no sense and making the two leagues different is really bad for baseball.
  6. NL teams are already at a severe disadvantage and pitchers clearly don't get enough repetition at hitting to be able to do it at a major league level. The sooner they move to DH in the NL the better. Every year a dozen or more pitchers get injured hitting/running the bases in the NL, it adds up to a significant disadvantage just taking the depleted pitching from injuries into account, not to mention the roster issues etc.
  7. Only because I think our only shot at making it past the first round is home field advantage and even with that it is really unlikely that anyone beats the Phillies. The Brewers are definitely in that 2nd tier of teams who have to get really lucky to beat the better teams.
  8. Park factors are useless because every park helps and hurts different types of players, there is no all encompassing single park factor that makes any kind of sense. Every stat is flawed in some way and when you are trying to adjust them based on things like park, position etc it just makes them flawed in different ways. Then if you are adjusting for things like that why not adjust for things like BABIP which just introduces more little flaws etc. You have to just pick the stat you like and go with it and realize that there is a wide margin of error in all of them.
  9. Park factors are useless and positional adjustments are highly suspect. There are no context neutral stats, trying to adjust stats is a futile process.
  10. This isn't some huge snub to me. Same thing as the Cardinals not bringing up Stavinoha or a bunch of other teams not bringing up guys with big years in AAA. If the guys aren't going to play there is no reason to bring them up.
  11. Case in point, we have moved towards our expected numbers in way less than multiple seasons, this is such a non issue for every team in baseball. Just another area where fans like to judge a team for no good reason.
  12. I can't imagine any reason to replace McGehee at this point, he has a .790 OPS over the last 51 games and is far from the 'problem' on the team. Giving Green a start or two doesn't bother me but I won't lose any sleep over him sitting on the bench either. I doubt he improves the clubs chances to win very much compared to the other players.
  13. On the flip side the minor league reports on McGehee is that his defense is why he would make the majors and the reality has been he has been below average.
  14. Betancourt is still most likely the worst starting SS in baseball that is playing for a team that actually matters, nothing has changed.
  15. There isn't a Brewer pitcher even sniffing at the top 5 for NL CY right now.
  16. They played like a bunch of dead guys for most of last season, the personality of the club has certainly changed. I don't know if that is because Macha was such a tool or just because the team is winning.
  17. I ate 50 hard boiled eggs the other day and then my wife cleaned our car with her 'better parts'. So I get the idea!
  18. Not a magic number picture but our odds at the playoffs are up to 73% according to http://www.coolstandings....l_standings.asp?sn=2011. I like it!
  19. He has one of the worst approaches at the plate that I've ever seen. When his balls are finding holes it looks ok, when they aren't his bat is mostly worthless. That is how most mediocre low OBP players are, he isn't unique at all. When he is hot he looks ok, the rest of the time he is a drain on the team.
  20. Even if you miss right down the middle it is going to be hit for a HR only a fraction of the time. A lot of ERA is out of the pitchers hands, especially when you are looking at a 50 or 60 IP sample. That is generally why some sort of composite stat is better than just ERA when you are looking at smaller samples.
  21. Betancourt has no range and his approach at the plate is just awful, not like watching the games makes him look good either. I hope we find someone better next year, I don't know that we will though.
  22. You generally want to stay away from guys who bat as low in the order as he does. Though SS is pretty shallow in quality so I'm sure Yuni is a fine option in many fantasy leagues.
  23. He probably is the worst full time SS in baseball over the past 4 years or so, that is a very different sentence than saying he is the worst SS in baseball though. That full time means a lot especially when you are talking multiple seasons. Betancourt should be a platoon player at best or he should at least be moved to 2B to hide his defense some. His offense won't play anywhere else but SS or 2B at all.
  24. I don't feel like actually looking this up but I'm betting he is close to the worst, nobody said he was absolutely the worst SS in baseball and nobody could ever be worse, he is just one of the worst SS in baseball and has been for many years now.
  25. The worst player in baseball is fully capable of putting up 100 good AB. Yuni isn't far off from the worst player in baseball so it isn't surprising he has done it. He has been more or less the player everyone expected. In the bottom 20 in the league for WAR and one of the worst full time SS in the league and that is after a hot streak.
