  1. Now that we traded for Morgan I really have no issue at all with this, Dickerson would be the teams 5th OF at best now and has even less value for us.
  2. It says that people in your league are underrating Volquez, Wood and Shields or it is a very shallow league. But yeah the Reds don't have a sure thing must have starter because of bad control, injuries or just being boring for fantasy(Arroyo).
  3. He's a significant upgrade over Gomez or Reed or Kotsay or Boggs or Dickerson. He's also an upgrade over Hart against RHP at least, so can't see how this can be a bad thing. So we traded Dykstra for Morgan and Mitre basically which is fine. These are pretty good moves by Melvin even though I'd have liked someone better than Mitre.
  4. I don't consider the Cubs serious contenders, they are more of a if everything bounces right they can be in the race type of team. The Brewers regular lineup is going to have 6 below average defensive players and an above average defensive CF and then Lucroy who i don't know enough about to judge. They likely will have the weakest defense in baseball. On the plus side they have a heavy strike out staff which helps minimize the issue some and can maybe help hide how bad it is some.
  5. 4-6 I agree, Gomez isn't anywhere close to the worst CF in baseball, even if he can't hit.
  6. We'll remember the concerns about the team depth and poor defense almost for sure. The little injuries most likely won't be a huge deal other than the fact the division will likely come down to 1 or 2 games so every small issue contributes a lot more than it should.
  7. Career .312 BABIP, last years .222. A groundball pitcher with mediocre stuff and a .222 BABIP is just variance. If there is anything to point to about last year it is that he finally had a league average LOB% which is something he has always struggled with the past, it might be due to the same variance as the BABIP though. Mitre didn't show improvement last year, he just had a little luck with his ERA which is more or less a worthless stat over 50 IP. I don't mind adding Mitre but you shouldn't put much if anything into last years ERA for him. As for Dickerson, no he isn't that great. He is however a marginal backup and that sounds good compared to Reed who probably isn't a major league backup quality player or Kotsay who shouldn't be on a roster.
  8. I think it is more likely they offered both Reed and Dickerson and the Yanks picked the better guy. Better defense, younger and at least shown a little offense at some point even if he hasn't sustained it. Mitre is pretty terrible but as a depth guy and swing man he'll work. Nice groundball rate, good control, gives up way too many HR, doesn't strike anyone out. He is like a poor mans Dave Bush with more experience in the pen.
  9. I can see this team not living up to expectations but awful is obviously not very likely.
  10. Fukudome is one of the most underrated players in baseball. The Cubs have a realistic shot at the division, there is no great team in the NL Central.
  11. Maybe we'll trade for Kevin Slowey since the Twins don't seem to want him!
  12. Dickerson's lack of AB has more to do with a couple small injuries than anything else. I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't make the roster. Hopefully they realize Kotsay is useless and release him.
  13. ?This really makes no sense though it is an upgrade over Kotsay I guess. Maybe Dickerson's run in with the wall was a bigger deal than we thought?
  14. You forgot a Mr. Grienke I think. Volquez is coming off of an injury and has never shown good control and his peripherals have not shown an elite pitcher. So far Cueto has shown to be about the same pitcher as Randy Wolf peripheral wise and hasn't been able to stay healthy. Nobody has any real idea what to expect from Bailey at this point. Out of the whole bunch I like Travis Wood the best and think he'll likely be their best pitcher. None of that really matters to my point though which is that people are saying the Reds have amazing depth but it is a collection of pitchers who have never been able to last a full season yet and that some of them haven't been able to put together enough control to have a good season yet. I never said the Reds don't have upside, I never said anyone has a better or worse rotation. The point was that people just look at the upside and ignore the realities. The Reds rotation could easily be a disaster this year, it could be really good too, the range of outcomes is very large because they have a rotation of largely unproven players, especially if Cueto stays down.
  15. Typical case of putting too much stock in potential and not enough in reality. While the Reds have the potential of a really good staff, Arroyo is the only starter you can expect a full season out of at this point. The rest of them are decent upside question marks who haven't managed a full healthy season in the majors yet.
  16. There is no reason to think Capuano can pitch a full season so this really isn't that big of a deal. I'm upset that Melvin left the starting pitching so thin and there are a 100 of ways he could have fixed it but this isn't any better than just having some old dude in long relief waiting to start if needed or some mediocre guy signed to a minor league deal. I'm sure Capuano will done fine if he makes the Mets, pitching in Petco east makes any pitcher look good unless they walk everyone like Perez.
  17. That line screams needs more time in the minors to me. He basically isn't walking at all and you can live without walks for a small sample but it will catch up to you eventually. Ha I can't even take this serious. Not saying he couldnt still use time in minors but to say he is not ready because in 27 at bats he only has one walk. How many walks are required in 27 AB to be ready for the majors? 2? 3? 27? Give a guy more that a weeks worth of ab's to say he is not walking at all It is as valid as saying he is ready because of 27 AB which was my point. All that stat line is really is a couple HR and some BABIP, doesn't really prove anything. When I look at spring training numbers it is all about K and BB for me, if they aren't showing something in plate discipline I can't find any meaning in the stats at all, even the discipline stats aren't that important but they sure mean more than hits. His stats have gone down since that first post and his actual stat line looks better to me now, curbed the K some and added a BB instead of just some random singles most likely off of mistake pitches.
  18. I still like the idea of bringing in a vet for a few starts and then moving into long relief as guys get healthy. This isn't about just April either, I see a real problem with depth for innings at the top level of the organization right now.
  19. I don't mind this move, he is a fastball/slider pitcher and it is hard to succeed in the majors as a starter with just 2 pitches even if you have great stuff.
  20. I think he puts up more or less the same stats he has so far in his career, maybe this big adjustment pumps the average up 10 points or something but it won't be very noticeable unless he starts to take walks.
  21. Maybe we can get Snell to come out of retirement.
  22. Not too unexpected, Rogers is throwing 1 inning still and doesn't look comfortable doing it, no way he'd be ready to start a regular season game.
  23. That line screams needs more time in the minors to me. He basically isn't walking at all and you can live without walks for a small sample but it will catch up to you eventually.
  24. At some point you would be better off just trading a player at their natural position than eating sub par offense at 1B. McGehee is a decent example of this, if his knees become an issue to the point where he can't play 3B it probably isn't going to be worth keeping him around at 1B because someone with his production would be dirt cheap to replace him.
  25. Not arrogant at all, if he said I am the best OF in baseball that is arrogant. Saying he is better than he has ever been in the past really isn't when he is in his prime and it is a reasonable belief.
