  1. I don't really know how NBA trades work, but I've heard them talk about this draft pick on the radio before. I'm pretty sure it's a lottery protected pick. I did some googling and found this: http://www.chicagonow.com/offhanded-dribble/2011/05/coming-soon-the-future-1st-round-draft-pick-from-the-charlotte-bobcats/
  2. Does anyone have any advice on how to calm pre-interview anxiety? I used to perform pretty well in interviews, but since my most recent search has netted me three interviews, but no job offers, my confidence is a little shaken. I usually try to study and prepare for things as much as I can going into an interview so I'll feel confident in my answers, but for my last interview I felt a lot of anxiety about 30 minutes before and it really affected my performance. I said "uh" and "umm" about a dozen times and then I started thinking, STOP SAYING UMM and it just went all down hill from there. I think part of the problem was that I showed up about 40 minutes early and had to wait in my car until it was appropriate to go inside. I'm interviewing for a job next week that I would absolutely love to get, but I feel like I'm probably a fringe candidate and will really have to interview well to get it.
  3. I would assume he'd have to hire a new agency first right? He's not going negotiate his own extension. I know he's not your average player, but I think that would be well over his head and he would know that. He could have done that without any fan-fair either I suppose.
  4. Does anyone have any experience playing in a draft-and-hold league? Often times, the owner that is most active on the waiver wire ends up winning fantasy baseball leagues. We put so much time into draft prep, we ultimately don't find out who drafted the best. The idea behind a draft-and-hold league is that you draft a deep roster of 40 or 50 players (23 players active), and eliminate free agent pickups (or limit them to ~monthly acquisitions to replace injuries, etc) with weekly roster changes. This format seems ideal for those who want to supplement a daily league and don't want to constantly tinker with more than one team. Is this format fun? Is a snake draft or auction better for this format? What kind of budget would you allow for a 40 player roster? Any input on this is appreciated, thanks.
  5. I like: Morgan Weeks Braun Hart Ramirez Gamel Gonzalez Lucroy P With Hart entering his 30 year old season, I think we could see his best power season yet. I'd just much rather have a 30-35 HR bat hitting in the middle of the order than atop it. As for Hart batting ahead of ARam, I feel he's a better hitter than Ramirez at this point in their respective careers.
  6. I don't have Showtime, but I rented the first season of Shameless. Wow! What a great show. I highly recommend it. A large cast and every character is interesting (the kids are great), several different story lines, and definitely pushes some boundaries. William H. Macy plays the deadbeat drunk perfectly and Joan Kusack is fantastic (I'm sure I've never said that of JK).
  7. The Mayberry Method grades power, speed, expected batting average, and playing time on a 0-5 scale. This method attempts to measure a player's skills, not to project how many runs or RBI he may have at seasons end. Five tool players like Braun and Carlos Gonzalez top the list.
  8. Mine arrived in the mail a couple of days ago. If you purchased through Shandler's web site you get the book in PDF form and the projections get updated in March. That way you can blow the font up to 400% if you need to. http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif I like that the player "blurbs" are much longer this year (he's squeezing in 7 players per page instead of 9). I like Shandler's general philosophy to projecting and preparing for fantasy drafts. His mantra of "draft skills, not stats" is helpful when mining for sleepers. It's funny, the book costs more than my fantasy league fees, but all the essays and projections keep me busy for weeks so it's still a good buy. edit: Shandler brings up a new format that piqued my interest: "draft-and-hold". Often times, the owner that is most vigilant in the free agent pool ends up winning the whole thing. A D&H format puts most or all the value on being able to draft well. You draft either 40 or 50 players (minors definitely included), set your lineup weekly (23 active players), and get no free agent pickups (or monthly auction bids to help replace injured players or players who have lost their jobs). It sounds fun to me because I love drafting and would be completely different from my other league. Plus there would be minimal in-season tinkering needed (daily leagues become a burden to me if I have more than one). Has anyone played in a league like this?
  9. I started reading Ron Shandler's 2012 Baseball Forecaster 2012 for fantasy preparation and came across this. I think it might relate to what your thinking about: Good Luck Truism: Good luck is rare and everyone has more of it than you do. That's the law.
  10. I don't know. A 3.58 xFIP, stronger numbers as a starter than a reliever, a 3/1 K/BB ratio. Nothing about his 2011 was flukey (slightly low BABIP). Peripherals improved from 2010 to 2011 and from 1st half 2011 to 2nd half 2011. Yes, he's probably a spot starter, but we'll be glad we have him when there is an injury in the rotation. The big thing to watch with Marco will be if he can maintain a respectable GB/FB ratio.
  11. I knew about the Scutaro trade, but read the thread title as, "Marco Estrada traded to Rockies". My heart kind of jumped because I like Estrada's potential as a starter in Milwaukee. That's all I got.
  12. Who is reporting? Dan Patrick? "Spiked" as in high, but not high enough to get suspended?
  13. A couple of months? Spring training games start March 4th. It's very unusual that it's taken this long. I wonder if Boras has something on the table and is hoping things fall through with Texas and Darvish so he can get one more team in the mix to drive up the price.
  14. Fangraphs had him as the Royals #8 prospect following the 2009 season. Sounds like his career has been full of injuries. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/kansas-city-royals-top-10-prospects/
  15. I kind of saw this coming. Take both NY teams, Boston, LAD(ownership/financial issues), both Chicago teams out of the market and you lose out on a lot of deep pocketed suitors. Once Pujols went to LAA and Texas won Darvish it really started looking bleak for Boras and Co. Boras is starting to make concessions this off-season. Ryan Madson fell $30-40 million short of what he was looking for. I think there will be some upset Brewers fans when Prince does sign because it will look like a contract Milwaukee could have done at the beginning of the off-season. Though Boras has pulled a rabbit out of his hat before.
  16. The dark side clouds everythingI, too had never watched Star Wars until a week ago. I'd been meaning to see them all so I watched episodes IV-VI last week. I enjoyed them quite a bit. I'm not an instant super fan or anything, but I suppose that has to do with a generational gap of sorts. So, yesterday I rented episodes I-III and watched the Phanton Menace last night. I honestly think that was the worst movie I've ever seen. Jar Jar was actually MORE annoying than I had heard and I really didn't like young Anakin Skywalker (which is ironic because I wanted to not like him, but I dislike him because he's a cute little kid! Can we please make Darth freakin Vader at least a little DARK?) It was so bad I couldn't wait to google, "Star Wars Episode I is awful" and found this and it pretty much sums it up for me: 78 Reasons to Hate Star Wars: Episode I Should I even bother watching Episodes II and III? I guess I'm committed to now.
  17. I'll throw my 2 cents in because, while I'm lucky enough to be employed in my field, I've been trying to find a new position closer to home for over a year now, and it's pretty frustrating. This advice basically comes from my own regrets of wishing I had done more at my current position. From what I've gathered about you from this thread is that you have the desire and education background to become a park ranger. But a lack of experience combined with a lousy job market hasn't netted you that dream job yet. But you have your foot in the door, albeit working in maintenance isn't ideal, you are working at a ranger stations of some sort. I would try to be more pro-active at your current job. When you have your sit-down with your boss, be honest. Tell them your heart isn't in it right now, but you have an idea on how to change it. Tell him/her that you'd like to volunteer maybe 10 hours per week by job-shadowing a park ranger at your office. Tell him/her that doing more relevant work will make you happier and you'll take more pride in your job. Sounds like you work some nights, so maybe you can fit an extra 5-10 hours of work into your week while finding out more about the dream job your after. This will look great to potential employers - that you took a crappy maintenance job just to gain a little more experience in your field of interest. Plus, working side-by-side with another ranger might earn you a great reference letter!
  18. I still find it odd that Marshall never succeeded as a starter. A lefty, high strikeout, high groundball pitcher that throws 3 plus pitches and can get righties out with relative ease. I wonder if the Reds might extend him and try the C.J Wilson experiment with him.
  19. Logan Morrison breaking hot stove news now I guess: LoMoMarlins Logan Morrison Just heard from my boy that Prince to Seattle is a done deal...
  20. Geez those are some impressive looking prospects. Still, I'd hate to be an A's fan. Seems like they're always building towards re-building. If the Nats could land Prince they could be really exciting. Phillies, Braves, Marlins, Nats - yeesh, the NL East is super strong all of a sudden.
  21. Back to the Danks extension....it does seem really strange for Kenny Williams to come out and say they are re-building and then extend a good, but not great young pitcher. Danks isn't the type of pitcher you build your team around. And while the money isn't outrageous, Danks didn't take a hometown discount either. I would have thought Danks could net 3-4 solid prospects, but apparently Kenny didn't like the offers he was getting.
  22. MLBTR Link I'm sure most are thinking.....what does this mean for a possible Marcum/Greinke extension? Danks, too, was set to be a free agent following 2012. Danks and Marcum are pretty comparable in my opinion. Danks is more durable and has accumulated more WAR than Marcum. He was probably set to make a little more in arbitration than Marcum too. Maybe the Brewers could lock Marcum up for 4 years, ~$50 million? Greinke is in another class, in my opinion. He's set to make $13.5 million in 2012. I would think it would take a 5 year, $80 million extension for Greinke to stay long-term.
  23. I'd really like to believe the herpes defense, but this is the exact type of thing that Deadspin would just love to post about and update 3-4 times a day. It sounds silly, but if they haven't run with this by now they must have some serious doubts about this defense. All they would need is a ONE semi-believable source and they would throw some speculation up on their site while going fishing for better sources. Prime example: http://deadspin.com/5867461/did-tim-tebow-break-up-lindsey-vonns-marriage
  24. The signing was announced Monday, but the financials weren't announced. What's up?
  25. Keppinger was non-tendered by the Giants. Is he passable anywhere defensively? Advanced metrics don't like him much. I think I might actually prefer Theriot.
