  1. Selection #2 - Miami Marlins Jeff Hoffman, RHP, East Carolina With Rodon off the board the next best college pitcher is Hoffman. I actually like Hoffman better than Rodon. I could see Hoffman joining Fernandez in the rotation for the Marlins in 2 or 3-years. Hoffman already has a plus fastball and a plus plus curveball. If Hoffman can refine his change up more he will have 2 plus pitches and 1 plus plus pitch. I like the high school arms but the temptation to have a pitcher who could be fast tracked through the minors is too good to pass up.
  2. 14-14 Braun struggles and the offense goes into a nose dive and crashes. The pitching continues to be good but not as good in April and costs the Brewers a few games with the struggling offense.
  3. I had some suspicion that Fernandez would only sign for a few teams but I think the Brewers could have gotten him but they would have had to of gone over slot for him. Probably would have had to of given him close to 1-3 pick range money.
  4. I would trade Fiers for Dunn if the White Sox would do it. But I doubt they would.
  5. If the Brewers are trading with the Mariners I would prefer it to be in the off season and to trade for Montero. I also don't believe the Mariners are going to be trading anyone and if they are in a position to be trading that means Jack Z is gone and the Mariners will be looking for players to help them next year. This means that they will be looking for someone like Nelson in exchange for Hart. Would you trade Nelson for Hart? I know I wouldn't. The Mariners are not going to be a trading partner I would seek out because of the situation that they are in.
  6. The only way I could see the Brewers trading for Howard is if somehow Weeks was included in the deal. That would at least offset some of the money for the Brewers this year though it wouldn't be all that much. I think Butler might be a possibility but anyone in the AL Central should be still in it by the deadline I don't see Detroit as being that much more of a dominant team over the other AL Central teams. The Royals and Indians are about on par with the Tigers talent wise. Unless the Brewers are willing to trade a piece like Estrada for Butler where it benefits both teams I don't see the Royals as being a match. Though I would look into Moustakas in the off season and see if the Royals would be willing to trade him. I don't believe Hart is going to be available as I see the Mariners being in contention with the A's and the Angels for the AL West and possibly a wild card spot. The Yankees, Orioles, and the Red Sox look rather flat so far this year and the AL Central is looking mostly mediocre at best right now. I believe both Wild Cards will come out of the AL West and the Mariners will be in that race for the majority of the year so I don't see Hart being available unless the Brewers will be giving up someone like Estrada or Gallardo for Hart which would not be worth it. Adam Dunn wouldn't be a bad idea to platoon with Reynolds though you would have to try and trade Weeks in that deal. I would also try and get Beckham in the Dunn deal or take a flier on Viciedo and see if he could stick at 1B. I doubt Viciedo would stick at 1B at best you are looking at Prince level of defense at 1B from Viciedo. Offensively probably about the same as Reynolds so no improvement there. I wonder if the Dodgers would trade Van Slyke?
  7. I believe Melvin would have traded Fiers but I don't believe the Mets were interested in Fiers.
  8. I wouldn't give up the prospects needed to trade for Headley. You are looking at Nelson, Taylor and one of Roach/Hanniger/Arcia to get the Padres to even think about trading Headley. Headley has also looked rather average last year and he is looking the same this year.
  9. Colby what about Braxton Davidson he looks like a player the Brewers would be in on or at least Jack Z as he looks like a player Jack Z would be in on. Will he be around when the Brewers pick with their competitive balance pick or will he be gone before that? I love his power and I believe his potential is that of Prince.
  10. Carlos Gonzalez for 1. Tulowitzki sits at 52pts. That park really adds a ton to BA. Tulo's actually at a 42 point split, but wow -- yeah, Gonzalez at ~60 points. I know Coors is about the most AVG-affecting park in recent memory, but I had no idea Gonzalez's splits were that extreme. David Ortiz has an average of about a 60 point split in his home versus away in the last 3-years with last year being the most recent year where his away batting average was higher than his home average. Does Coors help yes of course it does but nearly every single park does this. For example Petco makes fly ball pitchers look really good and Wrigley makes the Ecksteins of the world in summer look like Babe Ruth.
  11. who said anything about getting a lawrie-type prospect for Estrada? going into 2011 baseball America had him at 40 and IIRC many other lists had him a top 25 prospect. there's plenty of guys 50-75 that I don't think would be outrageous to think Estrada would get in return (nick Williams, arismendy alcantara, matt Davidson, devon travis, etc..). I am going to agree with this. A top 50-100 prospect is the fair market value for Estrada right now. I wouldn't give that to a team but the majority of GM's are not all that rational when it comes to trades. Blake Swihart, A.J. Cole, and Matt Barnes are also prospects that fall into the fair market trade value.
  12. Sorry nate82 I missed this earlier. If you could conceivably get 3 power arms in the top 4 rounds or something along those lines I'd definitely do it. It is something to think about and if you can get 3 first round talent players and over spend why wouldn't you forfeit one first round player for two more? On a side note I haven't heard much about Mac Marshall lately. Perfect Game Link http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/31/2014-mlb-draft-profile-mac-marshall/ He looks to be someone that could fall to the later rounds due to his college commitment. Though I think a team could easily pull him away from LSU. He is a nice lefty that sits in the low to mid 90's and his change up looks to be a plus pitch to go along with a plus fastball. The only thing he needs to work on is his curveball and that at times has looked like an above average to a plus pitch. If the Brewers take Holmes and Marshall with their first two picks I would be very happy and if they decide to go with someone who also drops due to an injury concern or sign ability I would definitely look at forfeiting next years 1st round pick to take that player.
  13. The PTBNL is a player who was drafted in 2013 or so says Heyman.
  14. You can also trade those 2nd round picks for late 1st round picks to teams that are looking to add more cap space for free agent signings like Dallas, Miami, and other teams.
  15. Well when you are worrying about a runner who isn't a threat to steal and leave a very hittable pitch down the middle of the plate that is probably a good decision. Not sure what Wooten was thinking there but he obviously wasn't using his brain he looked rattled and I am not really sure why he would be in that position.
  16. I was somewhat surprised that Parker declared I thought he was going to go another year at Duke. If the Bucks get the #1 pick the safest pick would be Parker. It might be a better idea to trade down into the 5-10 range and get another 1st round pick next year. I am not sure there are any teams that will do this though. Might be able to trade one of the 2nd round picks to Dallas for their 1st round pick this year.
  17. It was not Sansa who killed Joffrey. Burnzy24 has the correct answer.
  18. If you like weak popouts that would be a good move. Whats' the difference? At least we will get plus defense. Well there is first for everything and this is a first Gennett with plus defense? Maybe if your definition of plus defense is Yuni at SS then yes Gennett would fit that definition of plus defense. Gennett is about equal to Weeks in terms of defense.
  19. If you like weak popouts that would be a good move.
  20. Definitely sit Miller as he has been declining since August of last year. I would also look into trading him if someone is willing to take him on. Miller may even get demoted to AAA at some point or may go into the bullpen if he continues to struggle. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/shelby-miller-looks-broken/
  21. I hate this notion of taking pitches because of the count it is one of the stupid unspoken baseball rules. If you get a good pitch to swing at you better be swinging at it there is no guarantee that you will see another pitch that hittable. If you have a good or a great pitcher on the mound and they throw a pitch that is a mistake you should be swinging at it no matter if it is 0-0, 1-0, 2-0, or even 3-0. An extra base hit is worth more than a walk or even working the count only to strike out or to weekly ground out or flyout.
