  1. Touche'. The Meche trade wasn't giving Hart away. But most of the other trade ideas (here and elsewhere) that include Hart seem to only be proposed so we can get rid of him.
  2. I completely agree that Hart is underrated here. He is an average starting RF and we seem to want to dump him in with Hall and Suppan? If we want to upgrade the RF position, that would be a good idea. But just to dump him? Suggesting we start someone that one of these "good RH OFs" that can't get a job right now? Thank you, but no.
  3. We are starting to get some nice AAA depth. No high ceiling types (save for Braddock), but lots of guys that have done OK at the MLB level or project to low-level starter/relievers. Much better options than last year.
  4. Dillard was always a dark horse favorite of mine also and he has a better FB, but this looks like a good pickup. Even better if Dillard clears waivers... Good to hear Smith accepted assignment also. So our AAA depth could be outstanding this year, and we could still sign Mulder.... edit - spelling/format
  5. That is pretty surprising. There had to be some non-baseball related motivation, as he had a pretty good bat. In a 1B starved organization (save for the MLB level), I would have thought his bat would have fit there really well. I watched Watten pitch at a Rattler game last year. He really reminded me of Bush for a couple reasons: high '80s speed with lots of movement and would pitch very well for 4-5 innings, then get hit hard in his last inning before being pulled. So while I was disappointed to not see Scarpetta or Peralta, seeing Watten pitch made me keep an eye on his progress every once in a while. The comment about better D helping him as he moves up makes sense, as the Rattler's D was pretty bad last year. Couple of guys at new positions (Dykstra/Lawrie - both made errors the game I watched) and they had a few injuries that swapped some people around also...
  6. Would YouTube have any video? I can't check myself being behind a firewall... But I'm amazed at how many NFL scouting videos/highlight reels there are on YouTube. I would think agents would use that resource to help their clients get more publicity.
  7. These ideas all miss the main point: there is an imbalance that gives a few teams a distinct advantage in winning the World Series. Check out the NFL. When team wins its division, you get a mild "yeah". When they go to the SB, a bigger "yeah" and winning a big "YES"! What this ESPN guy proposes is that the AL Central be the way the poor teams get into the playoffs to be beat by the Yankees/Red Sox. So now, those teams whole goal is to be lucky enough for a ping-pong ball to let them play in the Central, away from the Evil Empires, so they can win the Central Division (big YEAH) and by some miracle, make it to the WS. Rather than making it an even playing field. (BTW, someone should tell him that a "Cap" doesn't mean the lower teams have to spend that much...) And FIFA model is interesting... It would give more teams something to play for at the end of the season (bottom of the Premier League, top of the A League). But it still doesn't address the inequality in how some teams can spend to get good players that other teams can't afford. The ESPN author's comment about MLB being on par with the NFL for competitive balance is a joke...
  8. Of course, they haven't let Irabarren go yet... This just sets up good ST competition.
  9. DPOY - defensive player of the year. Debate at LambeauLeapis similar to ROY in 2007. Seems like a strange article anyway. You can't revote for 2007 ROY and that is the only reason these two are linked. And the guy is using 3 years of data to prove that they picked the wrong guy in 2007? Also, keeps reminding the reader that Braun posted his numbers in 15 more games because of Tulowitzk's injuries. That doesn't seem like a good argument in T's favor...
  10. Its an MiLB deal, so please move if this isn't the right spot... For some reason, this one bothers me. Am I crazy for thinking Hill would have been a better signing than Capuano or Mulder (assumed signing)? I'm not sure how bad his injury was, but he has youth on his side. Duncan will probably have him back to '07 form again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  11. My guess is that most of those people go for the pre-game and atmosphere more-so than the actual game. I don't live in Milwaukee, so when I go to a game, I squeeze every last drop out of it. Last time, I got (politely) kicked out of the stands because we stayed too long. Then almost got kicked out of the concourse for the same reason (herding people out). http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. Really is there anything to debate? Both are good and valuable players. Both deserved to win, but only one can win. Kind of like Woodson/Revis for DPOY. Flip a coin and pick one, because you can't be wrong either way.
  13. Mulder would be a good sign to a MiLB deal, but he would still take a spot on the 40-man... Isn't the definition of an MiLB deal that he isn't on the 40 man?
  14. Agreed. I paid $8 and sat in the 4th row behind the Rattler's dugout. And I parked about 15 ft from the gate (well, maybe a bit more, but much closer than anyone can park at MP). I didn't get to watch a very good game last year (we got hammered pretty good), but this year should be very different.
  15. You answered it yourself... a loophole.
  16. I've heard non-tender Bush so often this year, it made me second guess my take on him (average SP). So I looked back at his past few years: Year Age Tm Lg W L W-L% ERA G GS GF CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP BK WP BF ERA+ WHIP H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB Awards 2004 24 TOR AL 5 4 .556 3.69 16 16 0 1 1 0 97.2 95 47 40 11 25 2 64 6 0 3 412 131 1.229 8.8 1.0 2.3 5.9 2.56 RoY-8 2005 25 TOR AL 5 11 .313 4.49 25 24 1 2 0 0 136.1 142 73 68 20 29 3 75 13 0 2 575 99 1.254 9.4 1.3 1.9 5.0 2.59 2006 26 MIL NL 12 11 .522 4.41 34 32 0 3 2 0 210.0 201 111 103 26 38 2 166 18 0 6 869 103 1.138 8.6 1.1 1.6 7.1 4.37 2007 27 MIL NL 12 10 .545 5.12 33 31 2 0 0 0 186.1 217 110 106 27 44 1 134 11 0 3 810 87 1.401 10.5 1.3 2.1 6.5 3.05 2008 28 MIL NL 9 10 .474 4.18 31 29 0 0 0 0 185.0 163 92 86 29 48 3 109 10 1 2 763 101 1.141 7.9 1.4 2.3 5.3 2.27 2009 29 MIL NL 5 9 .357 6.38 22 21 0 0 0 0 114.1 131 84 81 19 37 2 89 15 0 2 508 63 1.469 10.3 1.5 2.9 7.0 2.41 Two years jump out: 2007 and 2009. 2009, its pretty easy to remember his injury in June: G GS W L SV BS HLD CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA April 5 4 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 26.0 24 14 13 3 9 18 4.50 1.27 .253 May 6 6 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 37.2 34 19 18 10 9 27 4.30 1.14 .248 June 4 4 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 17.1 25 20 20 5 8 14 10.38 1.90 .342 August 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 4.2 4 5 5 0 3 3 9.64 1.50 .222 September 6 6 2 4 0 0 0 0 0 28.2 44 26 25 1 8 27 7.85 1.81 .361So discounting injury, he has had one bad year in 6 (and that bad year is still better than Suppan). And the 5 years were a pretty average MLB SP.
  17. I didn't mean to indicate an MLB for Mulder. Definitely an MiLB deal. But that does still qualify as signing FA pitching...
  18. He might not have meant a starting pitcher. prophet's statement didn't say starting pitching, just FA pitching. Either way, I'd be surprised unless another trade went with it, but everyone here seemed to focus on a starter. Myself, I'm guessing he meant Mulder.
  19. Man, we have to change that title. I keep seeing it and my heart jumps as it sounds like he got traded...
  20. Think of this. If Escobar doesn't hit and hit well and Gomez continues not to hit and Zaun struggles at the plate (always possible) you have four complete black holes in the lineup with the Pitcher spot. And it could get worse if Corey Hart doesn't turn it around or McGehee comes back to earth (or Gamel's still not ready). There's just a ton of negative scenarios with this lineup ... What season doesn't have the same amount of questions? Or what team doesn't have questions like this? The Yankees? If all the worst scenarios pile up, any team will become a losing team. Considering we have a decent set of options for each scenario you mentioned (Gomez/Gerut, Escobar/Counsell, Zaun/Lucroy/Salome, MacGehee/Gamel, Hart/Gamel/Gerut), I'm not too worried. I'm sure at least one or two of those scenarios might happen, but I doubt all four will.
  21. And beyond all of that. Beyond potential, great defense, etc... (which I do agree with). He looks like the Brewers plan for CF. They traded away our biggest trading chip (this year) to acquire him. Their biggest problem this offseason was pitching and we knew we needed spend $$ there. Otherwise, we would've just kept Cameron. So I think most people just figure the Brewer's plan is Gomez in CF with Gerut as backup. Many people have questioned whether the front office has a plan or not. If they went and acquired Edmonds, it would really look questionable. So you may agree or disagree that Gomez is a good answer at CF. But he looks like the Brewer's answer.
  22. Did the Cardinals really make much of an effort to sign Piniero? I don't remember hearing anyone talk about it. If not, that would seem to be a big indicator... they seem to know when to let people walk.
  23. Everyone is trying to forget the dark ages... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. I don't think anyone's throwing Gerut under the bus as Ennder suggests. Assuming you meant Gomez, I would disagree with the statement. Some people have thrown Gomez under the bus. I think everyone is routing for him, but some don't even want to have him starting in CF or a shot at it. People talk about buying low. Someone who has potential, but for one reason or another, hasn't produced as expected. So when we acquire someone like that (BTW, Hart and Parra could also be included here), many people have complained about Gomez being only a 4th OF (please start Gerut at CF). Personally, I'm excited to have him. I would have preferred a pitcher for Hardy, but I think Gomez is a good example of a player we should target. He has youth on his side and is improving (however slightly).
  25. Ok, I'm going to start a fire storm here... Overrated: Lawrie I listen to people talk about him in the same breath as Braun/Uggla/Kent and I get excited about his chances. But personally, I don't see it. I'm the farthest thing from a BB expert, unless its a 20-20-hindsight-armchair-GM http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I did see Lawrie play once (yeah, I know once) at a Rattlers game and he really hit the ball hard. But otherwise, he looked like he was going through the motions. Defense was atrocious. Kind of a blah attitude. Could have been an off day. I've also speculated that he wanted to be higher in the system and was somewhat demotivated at A-ball. But nothing else I've seen really contradicts that either. He is young for his level (I actually just ignore the AA stats), but still didn't put up anything that was WOW. Not bad, but not great either. He is ok in power, decent in OBP, average in average and steal %. Right now, I think Weeks is a more apt comparison. Weeks came with big hype and has turned out to be an average MLB 2B with defense that improved to average. So while I was lazy (and on vacation) and didn't enter my top 20, I'd list Lawrie in the top 10, but not the top 5... I sincerely hope I'm wrong; I'm just not seeing the positives that others see. (I'll also admit that since I don't get to see many games live, I rely more on stats. Not that I'm a money-ball guy, but results are important). Ok, I put on my flak jacket... Let the bludgeoning commence http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
