  1. A guy I would have looked at. But I wouldn't have went 2/$24 for. I would think my price range for him knowing that baseball inflation was back, still would have been $1/$10M or 2/$17M.
  2. I would. Don't want to keep emptying the farm, but you are basically trading a prospect that will start next year in rookie ball to a prospect that is ready for make it or not MLB time. Two more years of pre-arby for Smith is very nice. And if Lowie net cost is $8M that isn't that bad for one year.
  3. minor league deal being the optimum phrase there.
  4. Not to derail topic, I would be planning for Yelich for two more years. We can't keep him in 2022 and only get a pick back as compensation. He will be traded at the deadline in 2021 or at the end of that season. Hopefully the plan isn't to just try and win because Yelich is here. Develop the Rays plan of being good consistently, and hope for better luck to get to playoffs, go further.
  5. I really don't follow the AL at all. So to keep it general, you are going to have to be creative if you want to add a #2-#3 starter to this team for 2020. I have no idea if Price for his age 34-36 seasons would be that guy. But I would be willing to overpay what he would cost as a free agent today, if it means we also gain a prospect/major leaguer to boot. If that prospect was a pre-arby 3B, that is getting close to perfect. We cleared a lot of salary, and even if we are dropping the budget, it would be affordable. The second (Wheeler, MadBum, etc) and even third tier (Lyles, Pinenda, Gibson, etc) of free agency is drying up.
  6. I see that article talks about Dubon on 2B next year. So what are we assuming the cash considerations that the Giants are sending to the Angels? $1 to make it official?
  7. 2/$16M is the 2020 version of 2/$12M
  8. That's the point, though. There is more upside in an arm like Jake Faria than there is in Guerra. Also a much, much lower floor, though. Like it or not, they are going to be taking some risks roster-wise in 2020. Yes, you can shoot for upside, if you have the core of the pitching roster that is set and you have confidence in. How can you have that right now? I don't think we have so many arms that we are parsing between option #14 and #13 on the roster, so lets save the money. Right now we are short and for $2.6M, we could have filled a spot with a known guy, a known guy that can be a starter if need be. And when you have three starters, of which none has pitched two full mlb starting seasons yet, why not buy some insurance? I basically count Woodruff, Houser, and Lauer as the starters right now. Edit: Maybe I should get more info. Who can't be sent back down to the minors (without risk of losing) again next year out of: Black, Burnes, Faria, Feyereisen, D. Guerra, Peralta, Perdomo, Supak, Wahl, D.Williams, T.Williams, Yardley?
  9. I would have paid that easily to have Guerra return. He wasn't great, but he wasn't bad - he ate innings.
  10. I wish MLB would just let you trade any pick (or maybe any pick in the first few rounds). Seems crazy to be the only league with such rules. They don't let you do that? I figured teams could but they just didn't. Wasn't aware there were rules around it. If they didn't have a rule to protect teams from their owners, there probably would be wholesale trades of all draft picks to make the current roster better, by some aging owner - on his last shot going for it. The NBA had to put rules in place after the Cleveland Cavaliers owner Stepien traded away his teams picks constantly.
  11. The goal of the draft pick is to make the Brewers roster right? Seems to me we just accelerated the process and took away the real chance of a bust for nothing, losing out on the slight chance we could have had an all-star type player. How much salary would that draft pick have been added to our draft pool? You can add that amount to what is available for the major league budget right now.
  12. Well this year is a little different than prior years. The move to a 26 man roster, means that guys that nobody had room for last year, now the Yankees /Dodgers do. So the talent of those guys that were left without a chair when the music stopped might be a little less than prior years (at least among position players).
  13. Ding! Ding! Exactly which contracts would people have wanted the Brewers to match (or probably go higher to actually get them to sign here)? Saying that, if there is someone that is settling into our price range, Stearns will have to be prepared to act quickly. Jordan Lyles is looking better and better every day.
  14. There is no way that Hiura is splitting at bats.
  15. Well at least you know he will be available in July if you need him and he is hitting again.
  16. I thought that was due to the new ball and hesitancy to use the splitter, and that once he started using the splitter again he had better results in July and August. But he did seem to run out of gas in September; could have been because his 83 IP out of the pen, IIRC, was top five in all of baseball. He pitched in 12 of their 25 games in July and 14 of their 26 games in August, or roughly every other game in July and August. No wonder he ran out of gas in September. That’s my understanding as well. But who knows how the ball will be next year. Also, we could always re-sign him cheaper than arby That is my hope. Sign him for $2M with staggered appearance bonus.
  17. Has Erceg hit at all since his first year in the minors? He was old enough and there was no one else that he kept get promoted... I don't really think he will get taken.
  18. We still have Black from the Dubon trade.
  19. I love Moose ... but $64 million guaranteed? That is bonkers. That contract has the big possibility of blowing up in the Reds faces. That team continues to be a rudderless ship. I can definitely see where he won't be worth $16M per season after two years. I can't see it blowing up in their faces though. How long is Votto signed up for? Through social security? Moose can move to 1B, if he loses steps.
  20. If Suter pitches like he did this season, he definitely isn't going to pitch in games we are behind by a bunch already. He will pitch in higher leverage games for 1-3 innings depending on circumstances.
  21. I assume you mean their team budget.
  22. I hope it is a player named Cash. I went to search mlb.com for players named Cash, and what showed up was Manny Machado.
  23. He can, but he won't. This has to be part of a larger play. You cannot have Arcia and Urias starting on the same infield. Good to know. May not be plan A or plan B or plan C, but if they can't sign Moose or find any other 3B, then they have at least a body that has potential to play, right?
  24. Don't know anything about him. Any chance Urias can play 3B?
  25. I like Pina as much as anyone not named Pinamadness. But I don't see any way that is happening, juiced ball or not. I would expect 12-15 homers at .225, with above average defense - and that is at 70% of the starts. And I definitely hope they keep him to less starts, but Counsell seems to like to keep use that best guy quite a bit. I do agree that unless a veteran falls to them for cheap to just run with Pina and Nottingham or whoever they scrounge up on the cheap. For the marginal increase over Nottingham, it would be better to spend those bucks elsewhere. Doesn't seem to be too hard to find an adequate catcher at the deadline if you really need one. Wouldn't be against Vogt coming back - nobody runs anymore anyways and that gets you a lefty to platoon with.
