  1. Tough to know what qualifies as young pitching and what they might be interested in. From the major league level, Parra and even Villaneuava might be sought. Possibly Dave Bush. But you are right, there is nothing really that they can pencil in at AAA that would seem to fit. What would be nice is if they'd send us Jackson for McGehee, one of CV/Bush, and a C list pitcher (in the 20-30 range on the power 50).
  2. Escobar will easily replace Hardy's productivity and then some from last year. Not to mention that he won't be counted on to hit in a crucial part of the order like Hardy was trusted to do and failed at.
  3. Would you want to be paying Matzuzaka now, who was much more proven coming into MLB? I'd pass, and fully realize Chapman might end up being really good.
  4. One thing we might be overlooking somewhat is a position player for position player trade. There is still a decent chance we end up signing, for example, Mulder, Davis, and Washburn (I know some people would hate that but that's not the point). If we get Mulder and two others, that would enable us to maybe deal McGehee to strengthen a positional spot. Lots of teams need a 3B and maybe our best value would come in dealing Casey and Hart for an upgrade in RF. Just thinking outside the box, since we've already had one player-for-player trade this off-season.
  5. TLB - I am hesitant to offer both. If he'd sign an extension with us, I guess I'd be willing to do it, but there goes basically every trading chip we have, save our minor league prospects.
  6. No, I was kidding too, but admittedly only playing along because he failed to play along with my proposal involving Fielder.
  7. Your plan is to pay Lackey 20 million in 2011-2013? Bye Bye Prince. I'd really rather not even argue this. It's something I don't agree with and I realize I might be wrong. My philosophy on this is the same as it is in my own life. Pay the same each year, each month, each week. Getting "creative" gets you into a lot of trouble, sometimes sooner than later.
  8. I am not paying Zito 4/23 AND giving up Brent Brewer...
  9. I just see too much risk in that. It's like people that bought their houses cheap the first year recently with those bs loans. "I can afford THAT". Year two and three comes and you realize it wasn't such a good idea and you can't afford that number. Better to know what you are paying if you are one of the little or mid-sized guys each and every year.
  10. Let's give Lopez a little more credit before we let him leave (hopefully rightfully with a draft pick coming our way). For the very few times he caused us a minor head ache, there were many more where he showed he was our best leadoff hitter in quite a while and also our best hitter outside of Braun and Fielder.
  11. A team like Milwaukee would be best served not front-loading or backloading. Simply give him the same amount each year.
  12. Zito, Cain, Bumgartner, and 20 million for Fielder and Suppan.
  13. Escobar is a name I have not really heard a peep about lately...
  14. Depending on the pitcher, and I am guessing you mean a fairly decent prospect, that is far too much to give up for Vazquez. What Doug needs to do if he insists on a trade is find the Vazquez of last winter to trade for. Hardly anybody here or probably on other team's message boards wanted Vazquez last winter due to his age/salary/struggles previous seasons. Let's not "buy high" AGAIN. Let's find the Vazquez of the winter and buy low in a trade. I still like Jeremy Guthrie in this capacity.
  15. Yeah, I don't see this happening. What makes sense to me is Wells for Zito. Toronto can't get starters to sign there because of the division they are in. San Fran needs bats. Both contracts are two of the worst five in baseball easy.
  16. Yep, DeRosa is a good player, but we do not have the money nor the quality of pitching staff to be going after luxuries. We need to hope our lineup and depth we already have is enough in the NL Central and that we can improve our pitching staff with all further resources.
  17. Kramnoj, I read on MLBTR during the middle of the season that DAVIS was essentially HOPING to get 3/20. Maybe 2/16 ends up being right but 3/30 is way high. Time will tell though I guess.
  18. How about sign Davis and Washburn since Melvin probably wants to anyway. Let Bush and Looper walk. Trade McGehee, Braddock, Salome, and Parra for Hamels. Then you have Hamels, Gallardo, Washburn, Davis, and Mulder starting. You'd have a lineup of Weeks, Escobar, Braun, Fielder, Hart, Gamel, Gomez, Lucroy. Not bad at all.
  19. Gomez will be a downgrade to Cameron this season. Kendall's numbers from last year I am guessing will be easily replaced. It'd be hard for Escobar to do worse than JJ last year (and JJ was hitting at a very important spot in the order). Not to mention Bill Hall will not be having worthless mid-order at bats for us. Not really worried about the offense.
  20. Davis would be coming in as a backend starter. As a #4 or #5. Not sure why people would be all up in arms about him if we give him a 2/10 or 3/12 or something like that. We need three new starters and I am guessing he'd be brought in to be counted on as being the third best of three we bring in.
  21. Capps is not a guy I'd want closing games for us, nor would I imagine any contending team would. So I too would have passed on that deal. Harang I probably would have chosen over Gomez though, although I again say we need to see how we spend our money to help the rotation before we can assess this trade.
  22. Here is a blurb from Rosenthal in his blog. "If Sizemore's ankle becomes a concern as the offseason goes along, it wouldn't be surprising if the Tigers pursued a veteran infielder like Craig Counsell, a longtime favorite of manager Jim Leyland. " Maybe Heether ends up replacing Counsell. So many of us just automatically think 100% that he'll be back cheap. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch.
  23. Agreed RCC. Can we just have a fangraphs thread and otherwise keep the word/site away from other threads? Since so many people don't agree with a lot of what is said there, any thread bringing up something from fangraphs turns into the same old debate and we lose the conversation of what the original thread is supposed to be about.
  24. It just looks like it'd be a supreme buy-low opportunity. Problem is obviously, where does he play? Before we traded him when Prince was on his way up, there was talk of making him our starting corner outfielder. Can he play there? If Toronto really was willing to get involved in a Bradley type trade and give up Overbay, maybe we can pawn off Suppan for Lyle. I doubt it's a fit, but it'd be nice to have his bat on the bench or as an option in the outfield if he could play there, especially if we could rid ourselves of Jeffrey.
  25. I'd take Blanco at under a million for a year or two. It's better than Kendall and allows us to keep the kids in AAA rather than rush them.
