  1. Another thing when it comes to Melvin (and I've admittedly been a Melvin basher in the past, including as recently as last April/May). the guy did have a trade in place for Roy Halladay, which Halladay blocked. The point being, sometimes his hands are tied. For all we know he offered Reyes more money than Miami did, but Reyes had his heart set on playing in south Florida. It happens. Anybody who got that extension on Braun cannot be a horrible GM (love the extensions on Gallardo, Weeks & Hart too)
  2. I'm still in the "anybody but Yuni B" camp. I think Jimmy Rollins, while there are several legit concerns there, would be a mega-huge upgrade over Yuni B
  3. The talk by Melvin in the media about Yuni & McGehee is 2-fold: mostly it is because he is in negotiations with the agent for Aramis Ramirez and Jimmy Rollins and he's publically saying "we have other options" as he doesn't want to get taken to the cleaners. He's also looking at those 2 as a "back-up plan" I'll be surprised if neither Ramirez or Rollins are Brewers in 2012. I think the Aramis Ramirez signing will happen fairly soon actually. Am I thrilled by that? Not completely. But Ramirez has the potential to be a very successful Brewer. I would prefer Rollins though because I want no part of Yuni B. Would much prefer Rollins & Taylor Green over Yuni B and Ramirez And I do not think it is impossible for Casey McGehee to bounce back. He's hit MLB pitching before. It is not completely unreasonable to think that McGehee will be better than Taylor Green in 2012. A small market team like the Brewers certainly would benefit bigtime from a McGehee comeback.
  4. Thanks for the reminder of Larkin's stats. You are of course correct. I was making the mistake of comparing Larkin to all Hall of Famers, instead of comparing his stats to other SS's
  5. gregmag1, Eddie Murray does not completely work in terms of your point you are making, as he had one of his best years at the age of 34 with a .330 BA and a .934 OPS (he also hit .323 with an .891 OPS at age 39). I understand that in general his stats declined after age 32. Murray really isn't a great comparable to Fielder though. The most HR's he ever hit in a season was 33. Fielder has the potential to end up being much better overall than Murray, and Murray was a legit HOF'er While not 275 pounds, Frank Thomas is an example of a big heavy power hitter who had very productive seasons well into his 30's Cecil Fielder is of course the most reliable comparable, obviously in terms of genetics, but I think Prince is a much different player than his Father. I think Prince has a lot more drive to succeed and is much stronger mentally. Prince also is a much better overall hitter, with a far greater BA, OBP and OPS than Cecil I think with modern day training/weight lifting and the lure of modern day $$$, Prince Fielder could still be very productive up until age 35 or so He really should be a DH, though, that much I'd agree with, but I'd deal with him at 1B in Milwaukee for another 6-7 seasons **edited for grammar
  6. The perception was/is of Barry Larkin as a certain Hall of Famer but his stats in context aren't as amazing. I'd still vote for him though. Lee Smith to me is a no-brainer Hall of Famer. Bagwell deserves it, too, in my opinion
  7. So this is the first of what could be several big Marlins signings. It'll be interesting to see if they land either Pujols or Fielder or Reyes or 2 of those 3
  8. Ditto. I'd much prefer Hairston or most any other proven & competent SS over a Kelly Johnson type. Yes, I'd even put Yuni B. in that group (the former, not the latter).I tend to put Yuni B in the incompetent Kelly Johnson type group, but I hear ya!
  9. I would much prefer Jerry Hairston Jr fulltime at SS over a Kelly Johnson type who has very few of the skillsets needed to play the position
  10. And at the age of 58 he still might be better than Bill Hall!
  11. Maybe if the Brewers were to include Hart with Gamel and either Thornburg or Peralta it might get done. I'd much rather have Gio than Corey Hart
  12. I think it would take Gamel, Green & Peralta to get Gio, and maybe not even that... and no, I'm not advocating such a trade
  13. Which version of Bill Hall do we get to have on this team? The career year Bill Hall or Bill Hall now?
  14. For some reason I was thinking we drafted Nelson Cruz but then remembered we got him in the Ginter trade. Home grown pitching won't look as bad if Peralta & Thornburg work out If we're including Ben Sheets, what about Geoff Jenkins?
  15. I've got goosebumps here and a huge cheesy grin on my face. I'm absolutely thrilled!
  16. Wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or not, but there's quite a few new rules changes in the CBA. Instant replay on fair or foul calls and catches or traps in the outfield? Expanding rosters to 26 for double-headers?. Changes in the way Arbitration is done... http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/134334233.html
  17. In the large sample of Loe's entire career, LHBs have an .837 OPS against him. He is a situational relief pitcher at best, should never be an 8th inning guy, and should very rarely face LHBs, especially with the game on the line. The numbers don'e lie
  18. Wouldn't want to trade Thornburg either but yeah that would preferable by a long shot than another year of watching Yuni stumbling and bumbling at SS
  19. Well he "ended up" with an 8.31 ERA in 5 postseason games with a 3.231 WHIP (!) ... he was also statistically worse in September than in August too http://www.baseball-refer...01&year=2011&t=p According to Baseball Reference dot com, he is most similar to Carlos Villanueva. That says a lot right there.
  20. I agree that Hardy is a better (maybe much better) overall SS than Barmes. I just hope there is another option for the Brewers than going back to Betancourt. I don't see the Brewers winning the division without Prince and with Yuni B at SS
  21. And be a worse team. And make less money at the gate and in merchandise
  22. If we get outbid by Pittsburgh for Barmes and end up with Yuni B back at SS I'm going to be extremely disappointed. If this means instead that we're going after Furcal or Rollins or some other upgrade over Yuni B that would be different, though I prefer Barmes for his defense and durability
  23. I was advocating trading for pitching prospects, not major league ready pitching. Highly regarded prospects who might be ready in 2013 or 2014. Thinking about it more, if the Brewers cannot sign Fielder (and that remains to be seen), I could get behind using some of that money towards Greinke
  24. Similar to what I posted about Greinke, Marcum is a career 3.72 ERA , 1.217 WHIP guy. He is what he is. Both Greinke & Marcum are solid pitchers but not aces. Both of them are much more similar to Randy Wolf than the Halladay, Lincecum, Cliff Lee types. Sure Greinke won a Cy Young, but its arguable that was a career year, and arguable that he'll never pitch like that again. I would rather give the big money to Prince, who you know is going to produce for several years than take a chance on a 3.75 ERA pitcher
  25. Caleb Gindl Age 22 AAA ball .307 BA, .390 OBP, .472 SLG, .862 OPS, 15 HR, 60 RBI Corey Hart Age 22 AAA ball .281 BA, .342 OBP, .485 SLG, .827 OPS, 15 HR, 67 RBI The biggest thing that stands out to me me in comparing the 2 is Gindl's OBP: Gindl's career minor league OBP is .378 ---
