  1. I don't see anyone taking a "militant" stance against signing a reliever. I see people not acting like the world is ending just because we haven't panicked and overpaid for one yet. I keep seeing this from a lot of people. Who says they are overpaid? The market establishes what a reliever is worth. Now, whether or not the Brewers want to pay that is another thing but calling them overpaid is not correct, at all. Exactly, all these guys are getting roughly the same contract. None are being over valued or over paid, they're being paid exactly what the market thinks their worth. And $6-$10M a year is not that much money for a player today, especially when the majority of these deals are only 2 year deals, and especially when our current payroll couldn't get any lower with Braun as the only long term obligation. Personally, I'm not really upset that they didn't sign any of them, just surprised. We can EASILY afford any of those contracts but it's obvious Stearns doesn't want to afford them or no one wants to play in Milwaukee. Probably a combination of the two but mostly the former. Yes, RP are volatile. But after watching last year I don't know how anyone can say, "let's just go with the waiver wire, AAAA, minor league carousel."
  2. Which is why I don't understand the militant like stance some here are taking towards signing one. You don't get a prize for winning with the cheapest players possible.
  3. Yah trading guys probably not in our Top 30 prospects would have been deadly... Kinsler said he would only waive his NTC for the Angels so any talk about bringing him to Milwaukee is pointless.
  4. I'm thinking, didn't the Brewers take Zack Jones in the rule 5 once already?
  5. If you went in to this offseason thinking we were going to be signing exciting free agents then you set yourself up for disappointment.
  6. No one said that. You're leaving out key facts that make this non-signing "troubling." Briggs kind of literally did say that. I totally agree with TJ on value trumping the market. If Stearns does not feel that the relievers on the market are worth 7-8M a year, he should not pay it. There are other ways to build the pen. I know some people want to see Stearns just blow a hole in Mark A's wallet this off-season simply because we have plenty of money to burn, but that's not the right approach or a sustainable one. Signing a reliever to an "above value" contract isn't a big deal since it really isn't that much money in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather Stearns take a chance on a RP for $8M per for a couple years and have him implode than have sign a SP for $20M per for 5 or 6 years and have him implode.
  7. It probably will be for a few more years until they get so overpaid that one wants them anymore.
  8. With all the RP's that have signed so far I'm guessing any top tier or second tier RP aren't coming to Milwaukee and Stearns is going to pick up the scraps. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing but it would have been nice to get at least 1 "proven" guy.
  9. Any professional pitcher who appears healthy is almost certain to have some sort of damage to their UCL. This is a non-story.
  10. They only get Smyly for 1 year.
  11. Hopefully the whole stupid Phillips laugh thing just goes away and they don't ride it like Hank.
  12. I agree with the original point. Summer Sunday games are always going to fill up unless the team is just totally unwatchable. It doesn't make any sense to spend money to get people to come to games that are probably going to be close to a sellout anyway.
  13. You would think he'd be given a shot this year but they refused to even pitch him in blowouts last September so they may not think so highly of him.
  14. He must have really liked Philly to go back to a rebuilding team when I'm sure he was getting similar offers from better teams. I've wanted him in Milwaukee for years.
  15. Bird had a .891 regular season OPS after he came back from his injury and .938 OPS in the playoffs. His health seems fine. From what I've read Sanchez is set to see a lot of time at DH. The OF is Stanton, Judge, Hicks, Ellsbury, and Gardner. One of those five is almost certainly going to DH when Sanchez isn't. If they're really concerned about 1B and/or DH they could just get a much better and proven hitter in Carlos Santana.
  16. Bird is their man at 1B. OF and DH are set. There's nothing here.
  17. I wouldn't love Castro but at only $11M-ish per year for 2 years (assuming we'd decline his option) for his age 28 and 29 season, wouldn't be horrible. The Marlins are almost certainly just going to give him away to whomever takes the whole contract. Not my first choice for 2B but wouldn't be upset if that is who we go with.
  18. Maybe but I don't know why we would. Chen's arm is toast and I don't know what we'd do with Prado. He's not an upgrade over Shaw, unless you want to put Prado at 2B and even then he's still not much of anything.
  19. My thoughts exactly. Any minor struggle as a hitter Ohtani has and Socia will pull the plug on it. Although for all the effort he supposedly put into figuring out where he wanted to go you would think he would know about Socia and his old school thinking.
  20. All of my friends have watched Stranger Things and love it and what they've described to me does not interest me at all.
  21. Weeks ago. What is the hold up then? You'd think if teams really wanted these guys they'd be flying off the shelves especially Maitan. Maitan and a few others have signed already.
  22. Maybe last year, but signing a guy like this for 2018 would not be a smart move. And which stretch are we talking about? His 2014 that was only above average and looks so good because of a few good months? He's progressively put up worse numbers as his career went on. We could sign Garza to a cheap one year contract too, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
