  1. Because the majority of Americans seem to see themselves as just a couple of steps away from being a filthy rich billionaire like the ones that are hoarding MLB revenues. It's a really incredible boot-licking phenomenon. No, its because fans want to see their teams win and they know a contract like that will hinder their teams chances of winning because they know the reality is that ownership teams aren't just going to willingly lose dozens of millions of dollars per year. If was going to stomp my feet and demand billionaires just give away money just because they can, I'd prefer them to just give it to me straight up, not some other guy who already has tens of millions in the bank. Even if that guy was going to do his best to entertain me, I'd rather have the money. It's even worse once I realize giving that contract probably actually ends up hurting my entertainment value as it doesn't help the team win long term. This right here is why fans are "siding" (not even close to the right word but you know what I mean) with ownership. The owners are at least giving the appearance of making smart baseball decisions to try and run a successful organization - i.e. not throwing gobs of money at free agents when many pre-arby and arby players can give you similar production for pennies on the dollar allowing the money not spent on free agents to be used to extend players or fill holes with lesser free agents or even devote the money to player development. On the other hand, the player's argument is "stop hoarding the cash and pay us more." No part of that has anything to do with helping a fan's favorite team win more games. It's not really hard to see why the players aren't getting sympathy from fans, especially the fans of small market teams that are winning despite their financial limitations. What the player's want in no way improves a fan's experience.
  2. Agents complaining about teams leaking information... oh please. I think the majority of people agree with a lot of the complaints the players/agents have, myself included. But they couldn't be handling it any worse. On Twitter, Josh is calling people who don't agree with him morons and just being a general troll. Is that really how a professional should be handling this?
  3. [sarcasm]Something, something greedy owners...[/sarcasm]
  4. Last year Shields wasn't great any time through the order. 1st - .747 OPS 2nd - .692 3rd - .770 His 2017 numbers are downright laughable. 1st - .786 2nd - .819 3rd - .897
  5. Not sure why it matters to the Brewers to set a date. It's not like they're going to use that money somewhere else at this point.
  6. I believe the 3B numbers are skewed because he was playing short RF on the shift and the computers didn't know how to adjust for that. At least that was the story at the time.
  7. Never even thought about the fact the networks broadcast more than just baseball games and how that would work. Slightly off topic but it always made sense to me for there to be a standalone Wisconsin sports network owned by the Brewers, Bucks, and Packers. I'd think it could survive just be showing replays of classic Packer games and other Packer related programming but add in the other teams and you've got year round programming. Maybe broadcast some Blizzard, Gamblers, Admirals, TRats, Snappers, and whatever other pro team games. I'd watch it.
  8. Is that verified by StatCast™? *numbers are approximate* Does that also factor in the elevation changes with mountains? I would think that would add a bit more throws.
  9. In theory, I would think this would lead to increased revenue revenue sharing and be good for the league in general. But MLB tends to screw things up so I won't hold my breath.
  10. Bumgarner OPS allowed by time facing order. Career: 1 - .623 2 - .639 3 - .710 In 2018 1 - .566 2 - .683 3 - .868 Even MadBum is not immune to the 3rd time through.
  11. Exactly. Seems like an awesome person but really unnecessary to add the the already huge pile of mediocrity or worse behind Grandal.
  12. He has a kid coming soon. He wouldn't be the first young punk athlete to turn himself around after becoming a parent. So there's that.
  13. I don't know if I'd say Tomlin has ever had a "good mlb track record". He's only had an ERA+ over 100 twice in 8 seasons, 143 in 2015 and 103 in 2016. It's at 88 for his career. He looks like he does a decent job of limiting baserunners, he's got a very low BB/9 of 1.3 for his career, and his WHIP's reflect that as they're generally around 1.2ish. But his k rate is pretty low at 6.1 per 9. I know nothing about his repertoire but if working at driveline has increased his velocity and sharpened his pitches leading to a few more K's, then couple that with the Brewers great defense and maybe he can put together a good season.
  14. Ya I don't know why anyone would wear them anywhere other than the beach or pool. Other than that I just find it inappropriate.
  15. Between his comments and Buster Posey's yesterday, the Giants clubhouse seems to rival the Cardinals for total number of sticks up butts.
  16. I'm 32 and I remember calling them thongs as a child. I agree that flip flop is a stupid word. I call them sandals if anything now.
  17. It's a minor league signing so whatever. As to him taking AB's away from guys, I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in extended ST since he hasn't played in two years. And when he's finally assigned I doubt they just stick him at AAA, he'll probably go where ever he can get the most AB's without taking time away from any real prospects.
  18. My dynasty fantasy team welcomes this trade.
  19. I think it really helps the Pats to play in a dumpster fire of a division - Jets, Dolphins, and Bills? When you basically guarantee the Pats at least 7 wins a year and a division title before every season starts, it just really enhances their opportunities to be consistently great. I also feel like, overall, the AFC has been consistently mediocre or boneheaded outside of NE and the Steelers (prior to their skill position player drama). It seems like the NFC organizations overall are much better at rebuilding/retooling rosters to avoid extended periods of being awful. That starts with most of the teams in the NFC having pretty darn good to great QBs. I don't really understand the idea that the Patriot's dynasty is because their division sucks. It does, but that only gets you to the playoffs. You still have to beat really good teams to get to and win the Super Bowl.
  20. I'm home during the day so I can keep my sidewalks shoveled and salted. The vast majority of people can't because they are at work. I was just outside and my driveway and sidewalks are an ice skating rink. They weren't that way this morning. I feel bad for the mail carriers and FedEx/UPS people that are going to have to try and walk on these surfaces but there's nothing that can be done about it because all the freezing happened after people left for work.
  21. It seems like Stearns has certainly made an effort to acquire fast players.
  22. Harper? I barely know her!
  23. I have no interest in Gio other than a minor league deal. However, maybe Stearns thinks the Brewers defense will make into a better pitcher. Really small sample size but in 21 innings for the Brewers he had a BABIP of .182. With the Nats in 2018 it was over .300 and it sits around .300 for his career. Could just as well be noise too.
  24. The problem is that fans want to "fix" things so that the league is competitive and has parity. However, the owners and players only want to argue with each other over who gets more money. We, the fans, don't even have the same concerns as the people who are actually involved in the process. So, whatever agreement they come will almost certainly not address any of the problems we want to see addressed. As for the #1 proposal, I laughed it off as incredibly stupid when I first read it. After thinking about it, I don't think it at all plausible but could at least be fun to think about with some tweaking. League revenue gets split 50/50 every year, half to MLB and half to the MLBPA. MLB and the owners can figure out how they divide it amongst themselves. The players union can figure out how much they want to pay each player. Which, quite frankly, would probably lead to the union splitting up because this would be a disaster of epic proportions. Just imagine if, at your own job, your boss just gave the employees one gigantic lump sum of money and said split it between yourselves however you see fit. Factions will be formed, lawsuits will probably filed, just absolute union armageddon would happen. Bit I digress. The players get paid by the union and each year all players are placed in a pool and drafted by teams. This would totally eliminate any issues with market size or payroll and should, in theory, lead to having 30 competitive teams every year to start the season at least. In no way would either side ever agree to that but maybe it's at least fun to think about.
  25. I beg your pardon. I have read that Jeffress was facing a lifetime ban in a couple different spots. Did not realize it only applied to the minor leagues. I stand corrected and hope my posts don't cause any further confusion down the road. No problem. I believe the only way he could get a lifetime ban because of those tests would be if he was playing on a minor league team after being removed from the 40 man roster and then had a 3rd positive test. If which case his MLB career was probably over anyway due to ineffectiveness.
