  1. Would anybody NOT trade Villar for Scooter Gennett right now? I'm not sure that I would, but their value is pretty comparable, something I wouldn't have said a year ago.
  2. Nicely executed contact play! Made the defense work.
  3. What was the udder option? Letting him milk a contract for all it's worth knowing that he is injured? I'd rather have Albers--clearly the cream of the middle reliever FA crop.
  4. Under those circumstances, it has to happen greater than about 70% of the time. Yes, that's very frequently, but it's about the break even point for that kind of play. I am going to assume you are not watching the game live since you won't answer the question. No biggie either way, just figured there was no way you could be watching and say it wasn't that bad of a call. Yes, I watched it. He was out by a mile. I've seen enough outfielders airmail throws and/or a catcher mishandle a short hop to make it a not-horrible-send, which is all I'm saying. Odds are, he stays at 3rd, and the pitcher throws junk at Arcial, who whiffs on a couple bad sliders off the plate cuz the pitcher is up next so he had to expand the zone. Or, he walks and Anderson Ks. No harm no foul.

  6. No, it was a terrible call, and he's still out on a bad throw. It would have taken a horrific throw 20 feet down the line not to get him. It's not 30%, maybe 10. Arcia being on deck doesn't help your case much, if it was the pitcher on deck maybe I'd see it a little more. Even then at least you could clear his spot rather than just conceding an out at home. Alright, if you think he scores 10% of the time then it's a horrible call. I don't know the scouting report on Pham, but if it's "run on him," then it turns from a questionable send to a good send. If the scouting report says "don't test him" then I agree it turns a questionable call into a horrible send. It wasn't nearly as bad as it looked though considering the circumstances.
  7. Not a horrible call by Sedar. 2 outs and Arcia coming up. He scores on a bad throw. Say he only scores 30% of the time, that is probably still a better percentage that he scores than if he stays at 3rd.
  8. I think this is the optimal depth. I love having big sticks on the bench to pinch hit in key situations. Especially when those bats are getting regular playing time.
  9. Not good, but he's still 3rd in MLB in WPA thanks to the one hit! Yeah. If he plays 3/4 of the games and ends up with 200+ RBIs while putting up that slash line, it would be a rather unique season...
  10. Oops I screwed up, meant retired since Musial in 1963. So based on my original question Musial is right but then there are 7 total Yes Manny .312/.411/.585 Check that again then. 6 guys. Williams retired in '60, Musial in '63
  11. Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle.... Todd Helton? Manny Ramirez?
  12. I for one am certainly not OK with having 5 relievers with 4+ ERAs if we happen to have 3 top guys who can cancel some of those numbers out. Depth is important too, a top heavy pen will have some issues when top guys are injured or on rest which will especially be a problem down the stretch. I'm not saying we should necessarily expect that from our bottom 5, but if we go in anticipating a 4.25 ERA from Yo and we decide we're just OK with that since the pen overall is still good; while Williams could have done better, that approach makes no sense to me. Really? I'd take a 4.25 ERA from the long man out of the pen. I don't know, but it seems like the last couple spots in the bullpen and the rotation usually end up with 8 guys rotating in and out of those 4 spot who all fail with ERAs north of 5.5. Thus, they aren't in that spot very long. To guarantee a 4.25 for one guy for an entire year at the back end of the pitching staff seems like it would be a big win.
  13. As others have mentioned, I would guess the goal is to keep Aguilar around as long as possible. The "5th starter" and the "8th man/long relief bullpen guy" will likely be one and the same player to open the season. If the starters go deep, we can hopefully keep a 7 man pen throughout our "off daySSS." If not, then we will adjust accordingly once we need another arm. Between Suter, Miley, Woodruff and Guerra, we have many options on how to do this.
  14. I agree with what you are saying, except that we are paying a premium for Braun--and while Yelich isn't expensive, after this year he isn't cheap either. So it's not like we are taking advantage of the glut in the market by getting cheap production at the corners. I totally agree with that as a roster building strategy though. The team should be anchored by the 4 up the middle defensive positions and the starting rotation. If you are going to spend premium cash, I think those are the places it should be spent. Fill in the corner spots and the bullpen with young guys and cheap guys. That's why Cain was signed. We definitely needed more stability in the 4 premium up the middle defensive positions. With Arcia and Cain we should be set at 2 of those positions for the next 3 years, anyway. Part of me was looking forward to a Broxton/Phillips platoon in center, but that could have been disastrous. I wish we had a Phillips caliber prospect at catcher and 2b to back up/platoon with Pina and Villar. Those could end up being a black hole in the lineup. Or Pina and Villar could be borderline all-stars.
  15. The line is thinner than you think, which is probably why we haven't been able to trade Santana. Santana is more consistent, slightly better OBP, and a slightly better fielder (but still a bad fielder). They are very similar players, really.
  16. The Braun haters on here are downright comical. I understand that he's not young anymore, and I understand that most players significantly regress at some point near Braun's current age. Still, pretend it's the 7th inning of game 7 in the NLDS. The Dodgers are up 1-0 with Kershaw dealing. A couple guys got on base after an error and an infield single. There are few players in the entire league let alone on the Brewers roster I'd rather have at the plate than Ryan Braun. (I also understand how over the course of the entire season, Manny Pina could be more valuable than Braun. But there are a dozen waiver wire/scrapheap catchers I'd be comfortable with replacing Pina if he goes down. There aren't a dozen waiver wire/scrapheap players who I'd be comfortable facing Kershaw in the playoffs.) Enjoy watching a HOF caliber hitter while we have him.
  17. $12m a year for a 4.5-5 ERA pitcher is a disaster when you can get someone like Woodruff, Miley, Guerra, and Suter for about a tenth of that. Lynn at Miller Park would be bad and Cobb at Miller Park would be even worse. People hated Garza and Lohse and that is basically what you will be getting with Cobb and Lynn it is just that most see oooh new shiny thing and think that it will be different this time. Both Lynn and Cobb are bad pitchers for Miller Park and both would put up around a 4.5-5 ERA and be paid about $12m a season. Not a good idea and yes that is a disaster. What are you, Mark A's financial advisor (lol)? Long term bad contracts suck for fans cuz it hamstrings management from improving the roster in future years. Short term mediocre deals can only help out depth and trading options. I guess it is nice to have financial flexibility at the trading deadline too, but it's also nice to have enough depth to be able to trade away an arm or two.
  18. Anybody want a peanut? Oh please. He didn't really mean it.
  19. As someone who used to score baseball games somewhat religiously, I shudder to think how that would work outside of an informal short hand code for each batter this switch occurs Nah. You don't assign numbers to players, but to zones on the field.
  20. I don't think there should be mid-inning pitching changes except to take the starter out. Both speeds up the game, adds offense AND is more traditional. LOOGYs and ROOGYs are dumb. Be a man. Get 3 outs.
  21. Ignoring the statistics of demographics and just talking about the "realities of people", what is stopping small market teams from "sharing" with each other in order to combat the inherent advantages that large markets wield?
