  1. Maybe its a fact the market is saturated with -1 to 1WAR type catchers. A bit different if he was a 3+ history with WAR seasons and separated himself from the pack of catching options. Catchers play less, provide less offensively, just a group you pick up a body and they will do enough to make you not feel like they cost you the season, unlike a couple Brewer hitters. Until you get a bad defensive C. That can cost a team multiple games in the most frustrating ways (close game allowing SBs and passed balls for scores).
  2. So about the Packer stock-- is the actual piece of paper inscribed with a permanent owner's name or something? So the "owner" gets registered somewhere in the Packer owner list and that is a non-transferable claim? Obviously, people could still sell the slip of paper for whatever they want, right?
  3. I know this is true for out-staters (where I grew up), but my 10 years or so around Madison it seemed that the closer to Milwaukee a person was from the less likely it was that they could cheer for both teams. Heck, by the time I left Madison I hated Marquette; Now that I've been gone from Madtown for 10 years or so I kind of cheer for them again.
  4. Nice win for MU and Smart. Not a pretty game from anybody though. Similar to the game that followed.
  5. You have an odd definition of "ceiling." That result would be higher than the floor for this team and considerably lower than the ceiling.
  6. It was a very even game slightly in UWs favor except for the last 8 minutes of the 1st half when Crowl and Vogt were on the bench and their big guy Watson dominated. They missed free throws, we missed 3s. And, obviously, without Davis we are limited on offense to say the least. The D is and was still pretty impressive though. This team fights hard.
  7. Me too. At first when I heard this, I was like "okay...that's too bad." Then I started to think about how they are going to replace him and looked at the FA C list and kind of got mad that they let him get away. He is EXACTLY the type of player they need and just happened to be the longest tenured Brewer and they couldn't keep him. Right handed excellent defense veteran clubhouse leading backup catcher with a little pop and a knack for big hits. pffft.
  8. Aye. In 30 years UW has basically had 3 or 4 years without an All-American caliber RB. The PJ Hill years, '15 when Ogunbawale led the attack (and heck even he cashed a few years worth of NFL paychecks) and last year. Moss-Fletcher-(McCullough)-Dayne-Bennett-Davis-Calhoun-(Hill)-Clay-Ball-White-Gordon-(OG)-Clement-Taylor-(Berger)-Allen. There was some ESPN article I think in the preseason about which football programs owned particular position groups in the last 20 years. UW was #2 in both RBs and OL--2nd to Alabama in both cases. I think UW was top 10 in LBs as well.
  9. Allen is so young he can barely remember when GORDON toted the rock...
  10. Great defense tonight. Similar to St. Francis, GB isn't a good team and isn't very big, so not a lot can be evaluated from this game. The offense is still pretty sloppy and not particularly focused, but we've completely out-talented the teams we've faced. Not only will that not happen in the B1G, it will likely be the opposite in that we will need to play complete team offense to get good shots. The defense is playing as a unit wonderfully so far though. Looking forward to the next month! Providence in the Gavitt Games, the Las Maui tourney, GT in the ACC/B1G challenge and then a couple of early December B1G conference games. We should know what we have by Christmas, but so far I would be surprised if they aren't a tourney team.
  11. Mariners and Angels are both stacked in the OF, not sure how he could fit in either place.
  12. 42-21 at the half. St Francis isn't good. Badgers have looked as good as could possibly be hoped though. Bowman, Hepburn hitting 3s. Good defense.
  13. Hodges and Mors to redshirt. Not much room for them with Ilvers as another Frosh playing the same position as those guys (not to mention Carlson and Wahl and Gilmore). Perhaps they develop, perhaps they transfer, but likely a good decision for this year as it was tough to see how either would play meaningful minutes this year.
  14. Game #1 tonight vs. St. Francis. Only on BTN+...$10/mo subscription. Get the GB game, the Ill St game and all the volleyball games.
  15. Ask nicer. Please and thank you!
  16. BORING BORING BORING
  17. Other than the early INT, this is a textbook WI game.
  18. This game should be boring. It is.
  19. Badgers and Mertz doing Badgers and Mertz things.
  20. tv announcers what you want huh? i think he means that tv announcers are an ancillary part of what makes baseball the national pastime; regardless of how the beauty of the game is described it is still beautiful beyond description. whatever complaints are voiced about a near perfect game only sullies the graceful movements of those within the diamond.
  21. I love this idea. If we can keep Ashby and Wiemer, I'd think we would trade anybody to get 2 years of Matt Olson.
  22. I doubt he gets a break the bank type deal. I think he is the perfect Brewer FA signing. Veteran switch hitter with power who can play multiple positions and isn't too expensive. ...and who is not a difference maker, which is what this offense is desperate for. Unless you think we are trading Yelich and Hader, we aren't going to sign a proven difference maker. We have to hope for a Yelich bounce back or development from Adames/Urias/Tellez. There is hope for Mitchell/Wiemer but that isn't likely until 2023 at the earliest. Even a guy with Garcia's production is likely too expensive for us. Escobar is among the few guys who are actually likely to outperform whatever they sign for. I guess if we find and target another Adames type guy (under performing younger player with star potential at 1st/3rd or OF) that might work if we give up Hader+.
  23. He's a good enough hitter to stick around and DH for quite awhile longer. That's a lot of cash he's leaving on the table--and an MLB DH isn't exactly the most strenuous job in the world.
  24. I doubt he gets a break the bank type deal. I think he is the perfect Brewer FA signing. Veteran switch hitter with power who can play multiple positions and isn't too expensive.
  25. It's funny how people (me included) put so much more weight on the offense when evaluating how good a "team" is. In 2012 with Russ Wilson we were among the best offenses in college football but had a poor defense (a senior JJ Watt sure woulda been nice that year). That team WAS a lot better than this team, but the difference isn't as great as the perception.
