  1. Pablo Reyes was listed as the Pirates #23 overall prospect by Baseball America in 2019, which was actually lower than FanGraphs which ranked him #10 in the Pirates system around the same time. Below are his Baseball America bio and scouting report from that time. TRACK RECORD: Reyes signed for $90,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2012, when the Pirates expected him to be an everyday shortstop. He hasn’t made more than 36 appearances at short since his first summer in the Dominican Summer League, but he has since been molded into a Josh Harrison-style super utility player. SCOUTING REPORT: The Pirates called Reyes up in September and in just 18 games, he played second base, third base, left field and right field. He also got extensive work in center field as a minor leaguer. All of Reyes’ tools are average or just slightly above, but the total package might get him on the roster in 2019. He had by far the most successful September of the late-season call-ups, slashing .293/.349/.483 with three home runs in 18 games. He’s never hit below .265 in a full minor league season, he’s finished with double-digit home runs three times, and he registered 115 minor-league stolen bases. His arm isn’t great, but it plays at second or third. THE FUTURE: Unlike Harrison, Reyes may never win an everyday starting job, but he could be a valuable member of the bench, especially early in 2019 with Gregory Polanco expected to miss time with a shoulder injury.
  2. Via Jon Heyman this afternoon: Cubs continue to listen to offers for Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras. Angels make sense as possibility for Contreras due to Joe Maddon link as Ken Rosenthal said. Nothing more concrete known yet.
  3. Neither ZiPS nor Davenport projections are high on Avisaíl García for 2021. Personally I think Derek Carty’s The Bat X is the best player performance projection system available, but their data isn’t available yet. ZiPS Projections for Garcia (2021) [pre]PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS 525 479 59 129 24 2 16 64 34 121 5 4[/pre] [pre]BA OBP SLG OPS+ ISO BABIP RC/27 Def WAR .269 .328 .428 98 .159 .330 5.1 0 1.0[/pre] Davenport Projections for Garcia (2021) [pre]AB H DB TP HR R RBI BB SO SB CS 472 120 20 1 17 59 67 36 116 4 3[/pre] [pre]BA OBA SLG EQA EQR WARP .254 .313 .408 .251 56 -0.2[/pre]
  4. There is some vague speculation that Kris Bryant could be traded very soon. Via Bleacher Nation, There is “Industry Chatter” That Kris Bryant Could Be Traded “As Soon As This Weekend” Here is more from SNY’s Andy Martino, Mets and Cubs’ Kris Bryant trade talks ended weeks ago; Bryant could soon be dealt elsewhere
  5. The Nationals have signed Kyle Schwarber to a one-year deal according to Nationals beat writer Jesse Dougherty. The signing is for $10 million which is more than he was projected to receive from the Cubs in arbitration.
  6. Regarding the new Stearns quote from Haudricourt linked above: He said he is "actively engaged in conversations on a variety of fronts. I expect some of them will ultimately come to fruition although predicting the timing is always difficult." I think historically Stearns has actually been truthful when it comes to whether or not he has anything in the works. They've done a great job of not leaking the specifics of what they're working on, but he has at times indicated trade dialogue either is or isn't taking place behind the scenes. Last month he said, "I don't think we're on the doorstep of anything". In previous off-seasons he's used similar terminology at various times, while usually adding something about "productive conversations" that could set the table for something later on. This time he seems to be indicating something is presumably closer to happening.
  7. Lindor is currently set to become a free agent next November.
  8. I'll state the obvious, but the amount of suitors willing to take on the financial commitment here was probably quite limited. For the Mets it makes more sense than most because they are likely in a position to now offer Lindor a significant long term deal. It certainly seems like there aren't a lot of teams willing to take on large financial commitments at the moment, but the ownership groups willing to do so are very well positioned in this market.
  9. It's now being reported that Amed Rosario is also going to Cleveland. Seems fair to speculate with both of their potential future shortstops being traded away in this deal the Indians are planning to sign Lindor to a long term contract.
  10. Per Ken Rosenthal: Per Mark Feinsand: The deal so far according to a Passan follow-up... (EDITED to include Amed Rosario) Mets receive: SS Francisco Lindor and RHP Carlos Carrasco Cleveland receives: SS Andres Gimenez, RHP Josh Wolf, OF Isaiah Greene, SS Amed Rosario
  11. Per Jeff Passan: EDIT: Jon Morosi reports the deal is complete.
  12. Per Jeff Passan: Reliever Blake Treinen and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a two-year deal for $17.5 million with a club option that’s worth $8 million, sources tell ESPN. A seemingly good pay day considering next year will be Treinen’s age 33 season.
  13. The Tigers signed Robbie Grossman for two years and $10 million including $500k per year in possible performance bonuses. I had to do a bit of a double take because that seemed like a “decent amount” for a player not really on the top free agent radar, but I think I also underestimated how solid Grossman has been for the last few years with the exception of his 2019 campaign.
  14. Pirates were the last ZiPS Projection to be released (link). Since we did the other NL Central breakdowns above here is what the Pirates graphic summary looks like: PIRATES Starting Pitching: 10.9 Bullpen: 2.0 Position Players: 12.3 DH: -0.4 TOTAL: 24.8 WAR
  15. Baseball America did their first full 1st round MLB Mock Draft For this mock draft they used scouts and "industry insiders" to make selections in a draft format. They have the Brewers taking high school shortstop Brady House (from Winder-Barrow HS in Georgia). Included in the explanation is the following: Our scout stops a bit of a slide for House, who entered the summer as the top-ranked prep player in the class but wasn’t quite as dominant offensively over the showcase circuit as teams would have liked. He still has a chance to have plus hitting ability and power and those are first-round tools regardless of where he best fits defensively in the future. They also go on to point out that the Brewers haven't been hesitant to take players sliding down the draft board in recent years (i.e. Turang, Mitchell).
  16. What do we think of Ty France as a trade target? He’s 26 years and has some major league experience playing 3B, 2B, and even 1B. His career minor league slash line was .294 BA / .389 OBP / .470 SLG Davenport’s 2021 projection system has him as a 2.2 WAR player (in 499 ABs) with a projected slash line of .255 / .335 / .465 including 25 home runs ZiPS 2021 projection system has him as a 2.6 WAR player (in 508 ABs) with a projected slash line of .268 / .335 / .437 including 18 home runs He was traded to the Mariners back at the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent Austin Nola to the Padres. The Mariners don’t appear to have a current opening for him on the infield (although he could serve as their primary DH). It would likely mean trading a decent prospect (or the comp A draft pick) for him. I’m intrigued to see if he can continue to produce as a solid contributor if given a larger (and more consistent) role. Projection systems seem to think so.
  17. On the opposite end of the spectrum Davenport projections have Hader at 76.2 IP and a 3.0 WARP for 2021. I’d probably take the under, but it’s a fun projection.
  18. It sounds like Kim’s decision came down to the Red Sox and Padres. There’s been reporting that he preferred the idea of hitting at Fenway because of his RH pull power swing, but his family preferred a warmer climate. It’s also likely the Padres offered the most money.
  19. Quote from AJ Preller earlier today on what he’s still working on: "Now we'll continue to look at rounding out the roster. We're in the process of finalizing a few things. We always talk about the bullpen, which has to be re-shuffled each year. Definitely looking at the bullpen mix."
  20. There are rumors the Padres still have more trade discussions ongoing. It might be time to bring your best Hader to the Padres trade to the table.
  21. FanGraphs trade analysis article by Craig Edwards: Padres Give Up Prospects for Yu Darvish While Cubs Give Up Also, the Padres rotation in 2022 should include: Mike Clevinger, Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, Chris Paddack and MacKenzie Gore (not to mention Lucchesi, Lamet, Weathers, Morejon, etc.) Those first three pitchers (Clevinger, Snell, and Darvish) were acquired this year and the Padres surrendered just one total top 100 prospect to do it.
  22. This Michael Cermani tweet was from earlier today...
  23. Oh wow, some of their posters thought they were going to get both Campusano and Cronenworth... plus even more. Others were disappointed with that idea and wanted Gore or Abrams included. That would certainly be quite the let down.
  24. As much as I’d love to dunk on the Cubs for this trade, every fan base in the NL Central may be living in a proverbial “glass house” whether they know it or not yet.
  25. Moving this to the major league forum. According to Bob Nightengale: The #Padres are getting catcher Victor Caratini from the #Cubs in the Yu Darvish trade. Catcher Luis Campusano is staying in San Diego and is not part of the deal.
