  1. LOL I see what you did there Oh wow, would you look at that... I totally randomly already picked one correct!
  2. Bryce Harper - Nationals Manny Machado - White Sox Dallas Keuchel - Reds or Phillies Craig Kimbrel - Red Sox A.J. Pollock - Dodgers Marwin Gonzalez - Phillies Gio Gonzalez - A's Mike Moustakas - Brewers Wade Miley - Angels Adam Jones - Orioles Josh Harrison - Angels Jose Iglesias - Mariners Drew Pomeranz - Giants
  3. They can at least extend the QO to Puig and recoup a pick or get him back for $13 million or a longer contract (not sure that's a good thing, but they could). I wouldn't be surprised if Alex Wood would play himself into QO territory. He's been awfully good but has been shuffled around because LA has such a big group of proven, veteran lefties. Over the last three years Wood has posted: 364 1/3 innings, 3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 3.39 FIP, 122 ERA+, 3.59 K/BB Kind of wish the Brewers would have gotten in on him. Despite all of the attention surrounding the Sonny Gray acquisition I expect Alex Wood to be their most meaningful addition for this upcoming season.
  4. That's fair, but Banda's value was high not all that long ago and may have been traded at peak by the Dbacks for Souza. That's certainly a heck of a lot more value than basically being a throw-in pieces in trade for an outfielder. Looking back, that trade ended up pretty terribly for the Brewers...with Haniger being an all-star and Banda being TJ away from becoming an impact arm at the MLB level...and he still easily could reach that level. Given the benefit of hindsight that is still probably a trade the Brewers wouldn’t make again. Obviously it can be argued his development track wouldn’t have been quite the same with the Brewers, but Mitch Haniger has gone on to become arguably one of the 50 most valuable players in MLB.
  5. I remember Greinke’s fastball velocity being down at the start of last season (high-80’s), but it looks like it bounced back slightly. Still the past two years have been by far the lowest average fastball velocities of his career (fourseam and sinker). Brooks Baseball Player Card: Zack Greinke
  6. Well Greinke did basically call Grandal the perfect catcher. A reunion on the horizon? Seems very unlikely with the financials involved, but it also wouldn’t be the first time a move came out of left field.
  7. While not overly likely to happen, how much fun would it be to see Starlin absolutely mashing against the Cubs left-handed starters while in a Brewers uniform.
  8. A couple more Tweets from Jon Heyman...
  9. I didn’t think it necessarily needed to be fixed since it wasn’t quite to the point of no return and the discussion remained relatively civil. Just trying to add a touch of lightheartedness to the subtopics that broke out. At this point though you are probably right, lets steer the conversation back toward the primary purpose of the thread.
  10. Great example, Rasmussen could be both the biggest breakout and comeback (as in from injury/surgery) player. He is one of the biggest wild cards currently in the system. His Tommy John surgeries were in March of 2016 and September of 2017. If he is able to successfully regain his previous stuff he could be one of this year’s biggest stories. I am curious to see if the Brewers try to develop him as a starter or fast track him as a potential high-end reliever.
  11. Just your run-of-the-mill January trash talking between the Cubs and Cardinals... Bryant tweaks St. Louis; Yadi snaps back
  12. ***Logs into BrewerFan.net after 24-hour hiatus.*** Me (Internal Dialogue): Oh cool, the 2B/3B Options thread is heating up. I must have missed some juicy Brewers related rumors and speculation. Can’t wait to see what my BF.net friends have to say... Me (Reading): ...Machado... Machado... Machado... Addison Russell... Machado... Braun... Braun.... STEROIDS... Chain-of-Custody... Me:
  13. A blog called Diamond Digest proposes the following, Five Potential Trades for Corey Kluber. It includes this proposal: Milwaukee Brewers Trade OF Corey Ray, RHP Trey Supak, and OF Tristen Lutz for RHP Corey Kluber That would be an unbelievable trade from the Brewers standpoint, but tough to imagine the Indians moving Kluber for that package.
  14. From Ken Rosenthal earlier this afternoon... Jon Heyman added the following...
  15. Regarding Chili Davis’ comments about launch angle adjustments being made, I also saw some interesting comments in a recent Justin Turner interview. Here are Justin Turner’s comments: “I think everyone is on this launch angle bandwagon and no one really understands what it means or how to produce it or do it the right way. I think launch angle is just a byproduct of matching the plane of the pitch. I feel like you have a different swing for a fastball and a slider, sinker, curveball, you’re going to have a different swing plan to try to give yourself the most room for error. Everyone talks about launch angle like you’re trying to swing up on every pitch, and that’s not the case. At least in my eyes. I’m not trying to swing up on every pitch if I’m facing the Brewers bullpen, who all throw 98 up in the zone, swinging up is not a very good recipe for them. You’re going to have to try to get on top and match that plane. I think it’s just a misunderstanding. It’s so easy for all these guys on TV, analytics guys, and guys trying to break down swings, to say that launch angle is the devil. But that’s not the case. I think if you’re making the right moves and trying to match planes, then launch angle is going to happen. It’s definitely a byproduct of your swing and what you’re trying to do.”
  16. Interesting article... Why Mets making Cubs castoff Chili Davis hitting coach shouldn't cause alarm Cubs president Theo Epstein didn't really want to fire Davis, according to multiple sources Some snippets from the article (there is plenty more if you’re interested in reading the full article): Also, this Tweet from Jesse Rogers this evening: Kris Bryant admits he and Chili Davis did not match up philosophically.
  17. I don’t know if this fits as a breakout, but I am curious to see if Corey Ray, Jake Gatewood, and Troy Stokes, Jr. continue their power surges or adjust their approaches. Among all qualified hitters in Double-A last year they all ranked among the top 20 in ISO. Ray led this trio with a .239 ISO (3rd in AA), Gatewood registered a .222 ISO (7th in AA), and Stokes, Jr. had a .197 ISO (18th in AA). In theory playing in the PCL should help boost those power numbers even greater, but I’m also curious to see if any of them will trade some of that power for contact.
  18. Not when he does this on the Top 25 Victor Vargas - 4 Zach Clark - 4 Daniel Brown - 4 Eduarqui Fernandez - 4 Miguel Sanchez - 4 Michele Vassalotti - 3 Jorge Ortega - 3 Henry Medina - 2 You should have voted then!
  19. Came across these updated Cots payroll projections sorted by change from 2018 to 2019 (lowest to highest) on Twitter. There’s plenty of off-season to go, but the Brewers currently rank as the third highest payroll increase from last year. [sarcasm]The good news is they are still $72.5 million below the luxury tax cap![/sarcasm]
  20. I’m kind of rooting for this to actually mean a 7-team trade is going down.
  21. I am so down for the reincarnation of 36-year old Willie Randolph. Give me this, please!
  22. AUDIO: David Stearns on MLB Network Radio The audio clip is just 1:20 total. The first half is filled with Stearns standard lines about being confident in the pitchers they have. The second half is specific to Jimmy Nelson. Below is the transcript of Stearns’ comments regarding Nelson: “In terms of Jimmy Nelson, we expect him to come to Spring Training as a normal pitcher. Jimmy completed his rehab process last year. He’s going through a normal throwing program this off-season. That doesn’t mean necessarily that he’s going to follow the exact same pace that everyone else does as we go through spring, but we are I’d say optimistic that Jimmy will be able to impact us this year. We do know he’s coming back from a very serious shoulder injury, something that is not just your routine repair. So we are going to have to take a wait and see approach on him, but we do expect him to contribute for us.”
  23. I used these charts in a different thread today, but thought they applied nicely to the offensive impact a good offensive catcher can make. The league average wRC+ among catchers is typically in the 80’s which makes Grandal’s career 117 wRC+ all the more impressive. Average wRC+ by position (and league) in 2018: [pre]Pos. 24. xisxisxis - Thanks for providing the additional clarification. Maybe I tried to get too cute with my wording regarding the "contending team" comment. I certainly wasn't trying to convey that it would sink a team to have that type of production from their first baseman, just that it isn't ideal. However, I can see how my comment may have come across that way. At one point last off-season I took a closer look at the roster makeup of all teams to make the World Series (both AL and NL) over the past ten years and you are correct, in every instance the teams had at least one position performing at or below league average offensively for the season. The make-up of the entire roster certainly does matter far more than who is playing a specific position.
