Jarrod Saltalamacchia to MIA: 3 yrs./$21M
Eye Black replied to TooLiveBrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't think this move is going to lead to the Marlins going crazy on the Free Agent market. The Marlins took a big step backward the past year and a half, but by doing so they were able to acquire some potentially very good cost controlled players like Nate Eovaldi (age 23), Jacob Turner (age 22), Henderson Alvarez (age 23), Justin Nicolino (age 22), and Adeiny Hechivarria (age 24) to go with their other young impact talent like Christian Yelich (age 21) and Jose Fernandez (age 21). Not to mention mega-star Giancarlo Stanton who is just 24 years old. Over the next couple of years they will get additional help from talented prospects such as LHP Andrew Heaney, 3B Colin Moran, and OF Jake Marisnick. Then mix in a few FA veterans like Salty at positions of need (catcher, first base, bullpen, etc.) and they appear to be building toward a very competitive roster in the near future for a fraction of the cost of teams buying up the free agent market. -
Interesting comparison below between David Price and Doug Fister over the past three years from Fangraphs. Both players have 2 years remaining on their contracts. I think you make great points on Ramirez. I hope the Brewers move him to 1B to help keep his bat in the lineup. I'd rather look to go with a solid to strong defender at 3B (hopefully who can hit enough to make sense) & slide Aramis across the diamond. He makes a ton of sense to play there at this point imo. Granted, the Brewers are in a unique position if Hart is loyal enough to sign the kind of one-year make-good deal he discussed earlier this offseason. Then it's hard to just say "bye" to Corey. Sign Juan Uribe to play 3B and move Ramirez to 1B? Juan Uribe is probably going to be the cheapest Free Agent ever for a player coming off a 5 WAR season. Granted he is going to regress on offense, but his defense was stellar last year. I would not advocate for the Brewers signing another aging 3B if they had anyone in the system that resembled a future major league regular at the position, but that isn't the case. I think Uribe actually makes some sense for the Brewers if they could sign him to a one year deal. Unfortunately if the Dodgers are bidding he probably ends up with to a 2 year deal in the 7-8 million per year range.

Rangers reportedly getting $30 million back as part of the deal.
-
Current contracts for both players... Prince Fielder: seven years, $168 million Ian Kinsler: four years, $57 million, and a $10 million club option with a $5 million buyout
-
Prince had the Rangers on his no trade list, but waived his right to exercise it. Sounds like a 1-for-1 deal with Texas getting cash. Really like this trade for both teams, but look forward to seeing Prince Fielder crush balls out of the Ballpark at Arlington.
-
Sounds like this is actually happening... and going to make both teams better. Wow.

On the Baseball America podcast (JJ Cooper and John Manuel) from the end of October (15-minute mark), they labeled Johnny Davis an 80 runner. They had reports that Davis runs a 6-flat 60, and he is in the 10.4/10.5 range in the 100-meters. They also said it is the fastest 60 time they have ever been given for a prospect. His Junior College coach put a "Billy Hamilton's speed with Ricky Henderson's body" comp on him. He is 23 years old already, but if he can continue to get on base near the .350 clip he did in his first 100 professional at bats, he could be an interesting player to follow over the next couple of seasons.

Tim Hudson - Giants 2 years $23 million

I would be most worried about guaranteeing that money to a guy who is going to be pushing off an ankle he appeared to destroy less than 4 months ago. -
Would you trade Segura for Shelby Miller?
Eye Black replied to paul253's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
More fuel to the fire per Jim Bowden on Twitter referring to a MLB network radio conversation with the Cardinals GM John Mozeliak... The majority of the speculation is currently surrounding potential trades with the Rockies and Rangers. -
My FA pitching prediction is that Nez Balelo talks DM/MA into signing Jason Vargas to a 3 year deal leading to immediate consternation across BF.net. Another Balelo client that can be added to the Free Agent pitchers list is closer Chris Perez, who was released by the Indians after he struggled during the second half of the season and was found guilty of misdemeanor marijuana possession in September. The 28 year old former all-star was also college teammates with Ryan Braun at Miami.

Would you trade Segura for Shelby Miller?
Eye Black replied to paul253's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
If the Cardinals offered Shelby Miller for Jean Segura it would be difficult to turn down. Miller appears to have incredible potential with the talent to become a true #1 pitcher. Having Miller under control for the next 5 seasons would be very enticing. Predictably, Cardinals fans have their sights on trading Shelby Miller for a certain Texas shortstop. -
Interesting article from Fangraphs on The Strongest (and Weakest) Rookie Classes of 2013 They rank all 30 clubs, but here is some of the content relating to Milwaukee... The Top Tier: 1. Milwaukee Brewers: When the dust settled I was shocked to the see the Brewers leading the pack. However, upon closer inspection it’s easy to see why they did. The club finished second in rookie WAR, second in innings, third in rookies used, and 10th in at-bats. Unexpected help came on offence from second baseman Scooter Gennett (1.9 WAR, 230 AB), and Khris Davis (1.2, 153). Even limp-bat, defensive whiz Jeff Bianchi chipped in from the bench (0.8 WAR, 252). The club received help on the mound from both the bullpen and the starting rotation in the form of reliever Brandon Kintzler (1.3 WAR, 77.0 IP) as well as starters Tyler Thornburg (1.1, 66.2) and Wily Peralta (1.0, 183.1). 2. St. Louis Cardinals: The Red Birds employed 20 rookies, one more than the Brewers and three fewer than the MLB leading Marlins — and yet they reached the 2013 World Series. The club provided regular at-bats and innings to seven players. First baseman Matt Adams (1.7, 319) was far and away the most product hitter while defensive whiz and shortstop Pete Kozma (0.0, 448) was much less so. On the mound, starter Shelby Miller (2.1, 173.1) and reliever Trevor Rosenthal (2.2, 75.1) provided much-needed innings. Playoff stud Michael Wacha (1.1, 64.2) and Seth Maness (0.1, 62.0) also chipped in. 3. Miami Marlins: The Marlins didn’t lead the way in rookie WAR but they did employ the most rookies, while also doling out the most at-bats and third most innings to first-year players. Everyone knows what young hurler Jose Fernandez (4.7, 172.2) did in 2013, but the organization also received some additional starting help from Tom Koehler (0.6, 143), as well as relief aid from A.J. Ramos (0.6, 80.0) and Dan Jennings (0.6, 40.2). At the plate, six players earned more than 230 at-bats. The highest WAR came from outfielders Marcell Ozuna (1.6) and Christian Yelich (1.4), while minor-league veteran Ed Lucas (0.7) was also effective. A few freshmen hitters were replacement level or worse: Derek Dietrich (0.0), Rob Brantly (-0.8), and Adeiny Hechavarria (-1.9), whose slick defense couldn’t mask his offensive inadequacies. The Top 5 in Rookie WAR 1. Dodgers: 7.1 2. Cardinals: 7.0 3. Brewers: 5.8 4. Braves: 5.4 5. Mets/Rays: 5.3 The Top 5 in Rookies Used 1. Marlins: 23 2. Astros: 22 3. Cardinals: 20 4. Brewers/White Sox/Phillies: 19 7. Angels/Mets: 18 The Top 5 in Rookie Innings Pitched 1. Brewers: 634.0 2. Cardinals: 553.2 3. Marlins: 497.2 4. Rangers: 488.0 5. Astros: 465.0

Final: Daytona 7, Brevard County 4 Brevard's 2013 season ends with 7-4 loss at Daytona By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/8/4/49977684/cuts/Hopkins_5.15_uswtbng3_x0juv4s0.JPG Manatees second baseman Greg Hopkins, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 3-for-4 in Brevard County's 7-4 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 20th season of Brevard County Manatees' baseball concluded on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with a 7-4 loss to the Daytona Cubs. Brevard County (29-38 second half, 66-68 overall) jumped on the board early with a two-run home run by Yadiel Rivera in the top of the first inning, but that vanished quickly. Daytona (40-20, 75-51) responded with three runs in the bottom of the opening frame as they drew four walks and recorded two hits against Manatees' starter Damien Magnifico (0-2, 6.08 ERA). The first of the hits was a run-scoring single from Dustin Geiger, followed two batters later by Kris Bryant's two-run triple. Magnifico pitched just one inning and did not factor into the decision. The Manatees immediately fought back to tie the game in the top of the second and it started with a leadoff double by Cody Hawn. Greg Hopkins then smacked a single to center - the first of his three hits - to bring the run home. A single and a walk in the bottom of the third for Daytona, allowed Vogelbach to score on a throwing error by Yadiel Rivera to give the Cubs a 4-3 edge. Once again, Brevard responded in the very next half inning to even the score, with Hopkins singling and scoring on a Brandon Macias double. That was it for the Manatees' offense, with Daytona scoring twice in the sixth inning and again in the seventh. A pair of doubles from Bryant and Chadd Krist, followed by a single from Pin-Chieh Chen, put the Cubs up, 6-4, through six. Taylor Mangum took the loss as the fifth of six total pitchers used by the Manatees. One of the three runs that he allowed in two innings of work was unearned. Of the six total men he retired, five were on strikeouts. The Manatees finished 2013 with a .493 overall winning percentage, which is the franchise's best mark since 2009. Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 1 'Tees end home slate with a bang, top Cubs 5-1 By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/1/4/47501514/cuts/Pierce_4.14_h7w77ac7_v6udqjtd.JPG Manatee starting pitcher Chad Pierce struck out eight hitters and allowed just one run over six innings as Brevard County was victorious in their 2013 home finale, by the score of 5-1, over the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights AUDIO: Rafael Neda Pre-Game Interview VIERA, Fla. - In front of 3,495 fans, the Brevard County Manatees came out on top in their 2013 home finale over the Daytona Cubs, by the score of 5-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win was the 40th at Space Coast Stadium this year for Brevard County (29-37 second half, 66-67 overall), marking the most home wins for the Manatees since the 2007 season. Returning from the brief rain shower that caused a 33 minute rain delay between the fourth and fifth innings, Brevard starting pitcher Chad Pierce struck out the first five men he faced in two perfect innings. For the game, Pierce (6-6, 3.40 ERA) went six innings total and gave up just one run on six hits and a walk. He struck out eight batters, which was one short of his career-high. Daytona (39-20, 74-51) opened the scoring in the second inning, after Dan Vogelbach drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on a double from Wes Darvill. Brevard County ripped four doubles and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Hopkins led off with a double and then moved to third on an error. Four batters later and with two outs, Nick Ramirez went opposite field for two bags and plated Yadiel Rivera. Mitch Haniger and Brandon Macias followed with a pair of RBI doubles to give the Manatees a 4-1 lead. Yao-Lin Wang started for Daytona and held Brevard County to just two hits in three innings. He fanned four men. Ryan Searle took the loss as he allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Cameron Garfield smacked a triple off the center field batter's eye and then scored on a single from Cody Hawn in the eighth to cap off the scoring. Garfield went 3-for-4 on the night. Eric Arnett and Tommy Toledo combine to finish the game off with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Toledo went 1.1 innings to earn his 20th save of the season. Brevard County's 2013 season concludes on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach against the Cubs, with a 5:35 p.m. scheduled first pitch. Damien Magnifico (0-2, 5.26 ERA) will get the start on the mound for the Manatees. Final: Daytona 11, Brevard County 6 Manatees blasted by Cubs, 11-6 Ramirez ties Brevard's single-season homer record in loss By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/3/4/53846134/cuts/Ramirez_4.7_7t82f5hc_bubp5q7p.JPG Manatees first baseman Nick Ramirez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Brevard County's 11-6 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. The fifth inning homer for Ramirez was his 19th of the season and tied Brevard County's single-season record, which was set in 2011 by Hunter Morris. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Nick Ramirez tied the Brevard County Manatees' single-season home run record on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, but it was the Daytona Cubs' five long balls that resulted in an 11-6 loss for the 'Tees. Ramirez pounded a two-run shot in the fifth inning for his 19th home run of the year, tying the Manatees' (28-37 second half, 65-67 overall), record set by Hunter Morris in 2011. That homer made it a 6-4 ballgame, with a two-run double from Ramriez tying the game in the seventh. Daytona (39-19, 74-50) broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth in a big way as the Cubs belted three homers off of Santo Mazanillo in the frame. Manzanillo did not record an out and was charged with five runs in all. Solo shots from Kris Bryant in the third inning and Dustin Geiger in the bottom of the fifth helped build up Daytona's lead that was eventually erased by Ramirez, but it was big flies from Bijan Rademacher, Pin-Chieh Chen and Zeke DeVoss in the eighth that put Daytona over the top. D'Vontrey Richardson provided another offensive spark for the 'Tees, as he led the game off with a triple and fell a homer shy of the cycle. He scored in the first inning on a Yadiel Rivera groundout to put Brevard on the board first. The lead didn't last long for the Manatees though, as Daytona answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame off of Brent Suter (7-10, 3.63 ERA). After a leadoff double from Zeke DeVoss, Suter issued before he got the first out. Another walk forced in a run, before Rademacher singled and a fielding error by Ben McMahan allowed another run to come across. Suter would settle down and finished with five strikeouts in five innings, with all three of his walks and two of the five hits that he allowed coming in the first. Datyona starter Ivan Pineyro tossed five frames and left in line for the win, despite surrendering four runs. He did recorded five strikeouts and allowed five hits, including the Ramirez home run, with two walks. Brevard County will host its final home game of the season at Space Coast Stadium on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Chad Pierce (5-6, 3.51 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees and will face-off against Pierce Johnson (6-1, 2.22 ERA) of the Cubs. Final: Daytona 3, Brevard County 2 Manatees edged 3-2 by Cubs Brevard's comeback falls short against Daytona By Al Hernandez / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/3/0/58973830/cuts/Rogers_8.29_1_qy1r7owh_ofuatvff.JPG Manatees starting pitcher Mark Rogers allowed three unearned runs on four hits and three walks over three innings of work in his sixth Major League rehab start with Brevard County in Thursday night's 3-2 loss to the Daytona Cubs at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Interview with Craig Counsell VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 3-2 to the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Entering the bottom of the ninth, Brevard (28-36 second half, 65-66 overall) trailed Daytona (38-19, 73-50), 3-1. With one out, Mitch Haniger drew a walk and then Cody Hawn singled to put runners at the corners. Greg Hopkins drove in Haniger with a single into right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Rafael Neda reached on an infield single that loaded the bases. After T.J. Mittelstaedt struck out looking, Brandon Macias stepped to the plate but bounced out to Anthony Giasanti at second to end the game. The Cubs opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Bijan Rademacher singled and then Dustin Geiger reached on a Brandon Macias fielding error. Dan Vogelbach then drew a walk to load the bases. Another walk from Manatees' starting pitcher Mark Rogers (0-2, 3.60 ERA) to Anthony Giansanti, plated the first run of the game. Following a strikeout, Chadd Krist singled into right field to drive in Geiger and Vogelbach to give Daytona a 3-0 lead. Rogers made his sixth rehab start with Brevard County and was ultimately saddled with the loss. He lasted three innings, allowing three runs - all unearned - on four hits and three walks. The Manatees got one run back in the bottom half of the first. D'Vontrey Richardson led the inning off with a double to center. Yadiel Rivera followed with a single, to put runners at the corners. Richardson then scored on a Mitch Haniger groundout to shortstop. Alex Moore relieved Rogers in the fourth and tossed four scoreless innings. Moore surrendered just one hit and one walk, while striking out two. Dan Meadows pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the 'Tees. Final: Lakeland 4, Brevard County 3 Brevard bitten by Flying Tigers, 4-3 By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/2/2/58835122/cuts/Richardson_8.28_scjrw2au_5mdmk7ir.JPG Manatees center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run in Brevard County's 4-3 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - A pair of home runs propelled the Lakeland Flying Tigers past the Brevard County Manatees, by the score of 4-3 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Lakeland took advantage of a Brevard County (28-35 second half, 65-65 overall) error to score the eventual winning run in the sixth. After a dropped pop-up in foul territory by Nick Ramirez, Jeff McVaney drilled a solo homer into the visitors' bullpen in left to give the Flying Tigers (30-28, 60-66) the lead. Devon Travis blasted a two-run shot to left in the fifth inning to tie the game up at 3-3. D'Vontrey Richardson's first home run of the season, which was also the team's fourth leadoff shot of 2013, gave the Manatees an early 1-0 lead. After the Flying Tigers tied it up with an unearned run in the second, Lance Roenicke gave Brevard a 3-1 lead on a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Barnes (9-6, 3.08 ERA) took the loss as he allowed both home runs for a total of three runs, though just two were earned, in his four innings out of the bullpen. Damien Magnifico (0-2, 5.26) was limited to two innings as the starting pitcher for the 'Tees, as he surrendered just one hit with a walk and allowed one unearned run with two strikeouts. Lakeland's Tommy Collier picked up the victory as he went seven innings and allowed three runs, while striking out six. The final series of the season begins Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. with the Daytona Cubs coming to Space Coast Stadium to open a four-game series. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights AUDIO: Lance Roenicke Pre-Game Interview VIERA, Fla. - Working out of jams all night, the Brevard County Manatees stranded a season-best 16 opposing runners on base en route to a 4-1 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Flying Tigers broke through just once against the Manatees (28-34 second half, 65-64 overall) and starting pitcher Tyler Cravy (4-2, 2.08 ERA), as Lakeland (29-28, 59-66) scored an unearned run in the fifth inning. Dean Green reached on a strikeout with a wild pitch and then advanced to second on a passed ball. From there, he scored on a ground-rule double from Steven Moya. Cravy took a no-decision as he struck out seven men with just one walk in five innings, while yielding seven hits. With just the unearned run allowed, Cravy lowered his ERA to 1.29 in his nine starts this season. Brevard County didn't get on the board until the sixth, when D'Vontrey Richardson scored the tying run after a reach on a one-out single. Yadiel Rivera then hit a ground-rule double to left and Nick Ramirez's single to center would end up scoring Richardson. An inning later, T.J. Mittelstaedt drew a two-out walk and then scored from first on Ben McMahan's double to left. Matt Miller was credited with the win as he allowed two hits and three walks in two innings of work. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO: Game Highlights VIERA, Fla. - Another late comeback attempt fell short for the Brevard County Manatees in the second game of Monday night's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium as they fell 3-2 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers and were swept in the twinbill. A three-run home run from Dean Green after a leadoff walk and a single gave the Flying Tigers a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded. Brevard County (27-34 second half, 64-64 overall) battled back, with Mitch Haniger's one-out double and an RBI single from Ben McMahan putting the 'Tees on the board in the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth, a leadoff walk drawn by Haniger was followed by a single from Cody Hawn that pushed Haniger to third. Greg Hopkins drove Haniger home with a RBI base hit to right, but the Manatees ended up leaving runners on second and third at the end of the inning. Lakeland (29-27, 59-65) starting pitcher Patrick Cooper did not factor into the decision, as he left the game alongside the trainer and pitching coach after a four-pitch walk to Hopkins with two outs in the fourth inning. He was charged with just one run, with the RBI hit coming against reliever Nick Avila. Cooper surrendered two singles and two walks. For the Manatees, Taylor Mangum (1-2, 4.71) was making his first professional start of the mound. After a rocky first inning, Mangum settled down and made it through six innings, as he surrendered six hits and three walks, while fanning three. Dan Meadows threw a perfect seventh to keep the 'Tees within striking distance. The third game of the series will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Tyler Cravy (4-2, 2.18 ERA) will look to continue his dominance on the mound for the Manatees, as he will be opposed by Kevin Eichhorn (2-5, 3.52 ERA) for the Flying Tigers.
