  1. Cactus injuries > pick-up basketball, scissors, or suit case injuries
  2. I received some of the JCI stadium club passes this year as well. They were used as an incentive this year to renew during the early period. Looking forward to using them!
  3. I agree that some of these transactions make me feel like the Brewers are playing Roulette instead of Black Jack. There just seems to be a lack of strategy involved with cultivating off-season targets. I have always pictured both trade and free agent targets as being part of a formulated plan that incorporates hundreds of hours of scouting analysis with cutting edge analytical data that is so advance we don't even know about it yet. But some of these accounts given by Attanasio feel more like scenes straight out of the show Arliss.

  5. I will be there early as well. I went to my first opening day 4 years ago and I have been to everyone since. The anticipation and excitement leading up to first pitch on opening day is something truly special.
  6. tomwopat, you stole mine for 10! Oh well, RIP Gus.
  7. Had to remove the Braves pick, so I bumped you to the Cardinals pick now at #27. Might add the first couple of comp round picks if we have any more lost draft picks for either Drew or Morales.
  8. One interesting note on Luis Ortiz from this January interview:
  9. This would make more sense if the Brewers had shifted focus toward building for the future over the past 9 months, similar to what the White Sox have been doing. Since the focus has been restocking a potential wild card contender, every win matters for this team and Peralta is likely to be more valuable than those who would replace his starts. It is also possible that Peralta will add more value to this year's team then he would to the 2019 version of the Brewers anyway based on the fact they have very little in the way of organizational impact talent under 25 years old.
  10. I rarely watch anything on ESPN these days that isn't a live sporting event. Being a little sick the past couple of days has allowed me to watch Sportscenter and some other ESPN programming. Multiple times I have noticed the anchors and reporters interviewing someone using the phrase, "Talk about ____." Notice there is no question mark punctuating the end of that sentence... because it isn't a question! Malcolm Moran's February Article covered this in much greater detail than I ever could. It has really turned into a pet peeve of mine as well. You are being paid as a professional to ask sports figures QUESTIONS, and the best you can come up with is "Talk about ____". There is no skill to that type of interview style whatsoever. It really shouldn't be that difficult to frame some questions around the topics you want the person to "talk about". Maybe this is petty on my part, but it just doesn't come across as a professional approach.
  11. That was my assumption as well. Perez played with Braun in college, and was in the category of needing someone to give him an opportunity to bounce back from some performance decline and off the field problems. I actually mentioned him as a possibility back in the 2014 FA Arms thread (#27) due to the fact he was represented by Baleo. Interesting that it may not actually have been that far off as a possibility.
  12. This B-Ref page lists all Tommy John surgery patients and notes anyone who has had more than one. Among the more recent players with multiple surgeries are Zambrano, Joakim Soria, Capuano. Also of note according to the list, Jose Rijo apparently had 5 TJ surgeries!
  13. This Ken Rosenthal interview with Mark Attanasio is excellent. Some explanation of the financials and probably the best insight into his exact involvement in the Lohse and Garza signings that I have seen published...
  14. Record: 82-80 All Stars: Jonathan Lucroy, Ryan Braun Biggest Surprise: Wily Peralta Biggest Disappointment: Khris Davis, Matt Garza Playoffs: No Place in Division: 3rd World Series: Nationals vs. A's
  15. According to this MLB Trade Rumors article (full text quoted below), Kendrys Morales and Stephen Drew may actually hold off signing any deal until June in order to remove being strapped with the QO draft pick compensation. I am intrigued by the possibility and if it ends up working into a multi-year deal for either player I think it will become a more common threat from first division regular level players receiving a qualifying offer.
  16. 12-16 in March/April, followed by a tough May as well. The schedule the first two months of the season doesn't set-up well for a good start to the season. I am interested to see how the NL Central on the whole stacks up against the AL East this year.
  17. The nice thing about the pitching list is that while it may lack elite arms it certainly has depth. When some of the inevitable pitching injuries occur there are capable guys to replace them. Regarding Peralta, I am extremely optimistic for the season. I am hopeful that his stuff combined with his durability make him a solid mid-rotation pitcher. He is the one guy in the rotation I get legitimately excited to watch pitch every start. My one meaningless complaint is that Wily looked more intimidating in his #60 jersey.
  18. Some no hitter karma in the countdown... http://www.avonoldfarms.com/uploaded/photos/athletics/hallofame/photos/nieves-83.jpg
  19. So here is a picture of Derek Jeter and Todd Frazier on a baseball field... from 16 years ago. Full NYT Article: Jeter Brings Out the Kid in a Future Opponent http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/02/19/sports/19FRAZIER2/19FRAZIER2-articleLarge.jpg
  20. Well it pretty much is like that. Right now it is only a verbal promise, since you can't officially sign until July. The fact that the deep pocket teams know the team and the amount to beat for Lara only makes it easier for them to negotiate him away. And if you are a teen with no money, there is no way you don't take the biggest contract offer, even if he had a verbal deal with Milwaukee - and I wouldn't blame him. Aside from the verbal promise, I don't think it is very similar. The negotiations involving top talent in the DR typical involve the player's trainer. Both the team and the trainer, who represents several young ballplayers, have a reciprocal motivation to maintain a good relationship. Once an agreement is struck the trainer begins counting on his (often large) percentage of the player's contract. I also don't worry about teams knowing the "amount to beat" since I don't think that information would have been difficult for other teams to obtain regardless of whether this news went public or not. By the time a verbal agreement is made, I would guess the trainer has fielded several offers and has a very good understanding of his players market value.
  21. I am curious about the ramifications on the Phillies future dealings with agents. There are reports of agent backlash due to these incidents, like this paragraph from that BA article: So at least preliminarily it appears this is going to make things more difficult on the Phillies leading into this year's draft. While it may very well effect the Phillies moving forward, Kiley McDaniel does a good job of summarizing why the Phillies might not be overly concerned about the impact on future drafts or negotiations in his article, Explainer: The Phillies & Wetzler
  22. Orioles now also to sign Nelson Cruz per Jon Heyman. I have also heard they are interested in Ervin Santana. I guess if you are going to pay the penalty of one QO signing, you might as well go ahead and sign them all!
  23. TheCrew brings up an interesting point. Innings per start is something I hope the Brewers can increase this year. If they don't I think they will need to stick with an additional arm in the bullpen. The Brewers averaged just 5.7 innings per start last year, only 4 teams were worse (Astros, Blue Jays, Rockies, Twins). The league average was 5.9, but teams at the top (Tigers, Reds) averaged 6.3 and 6.2. That may not sound like a dramatic difference, but over the course of a season it is an additional 80 innings pitched by starters, more innings than any Brewers non-starter pitched total last year. What is even more striking is the Reds starters averaged 6.2 IP/GS on an average of 95 pitches per start. That is far more efficient than the Brewers 5.7 IP/GS on an average of 92 pitches per start.
  24. Of course BallFour, thanks for joining!
  25. Baseball America released a similar Early Draft Preview: College Best Tools. After seeing Taylor Jungmann listed as best command in the 2011 article colbyjack posted, this caught my attention from another college pitcher expected to go somewhere near the Brewers pick this year...
