Final: Daytona 5, Brevard County 2 Brevard's home winning streak ends against Cubs Manatees fall to 4-9 against rival Daytona with 5-2 defeat By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/0/6/52857006/cuts/Magnifico_7.5_3_x3llpfs2_7uj6ksab.JPG Manatees starting pitcher Damien Magnifico allowed five runs in three-plus innings of work in Brevard County's 5-2 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS VIERA, Fla. - A crowd of 3,904 saw the Brevard County Manatees' nine-game home winning streak snapped on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium, in a 5-2 loss to the Daytona Cubs. All seven runs were scored in the first three and a half innings, with both teams trading scores in the first and third frames. Wes Darvill opened up the offense in the first, taking a pitch from Manatees' (8-6 second half, 45-36 overall) starter Damien Magnifico (0-1, 7.11 ERA) into the jet stream and over the right field wall. It was the only hit for Daytona (9-4, 44-35) in the opening inning though as Magnifico struck out each of the three other batters who came to the plate. A trio of bloop singles brought in a run for the 'Tees in the bottom of the inning with Yadiel Rivera leading it off by tapping a soft chopper right in front of the plate. Rivera would move to second after Nick Ramirez took advantage of a huge gap down the left field line for a base hit. Ramirez finished the night by going 3-for-4. Cameron Garfield then found just enough room over the head of first baseman Dustin Geiger for the ball to get down for another single to bring in Rivera and tie the game. Garfield also had a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-4. Javier Baez and Geiger both scored in the third, with Baez taking advantage of a pair of stolen bases and a throwing error from Rafael Neda on his steal of third base, to come around and score. Chadd Krist later singled with two outs to bring in Geiger and give the Cubs a 3-1 lead. Mitch Haniger's two-out double in the bottom of the inning drove in Ramirez and cut the deficit to 3-2, but that would be all the offense that the Manatees could put together. Daytona added insurance in the fourth, with Magnifico leaving the game with an undisclosed injury after giving up a single and a walk to start the inning. Tyler Cravy came on in relief and allowed the two inherited runners to score on a two-out single by Geiger to make it a 5-2 game. Magnifico took the loss, with all five Daytona runs falling on his shoulders. He surrendered five hits and three walks, while recording four strikeouts. The Manatees did not draw a walk on Friday night against the Cubs, making it just the third time this season that Brevard County failed to take a free pass. Beginning Saturday, New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez is expected to continue his rehab stint as he joins the Tampa Yankees for the start of a three-game set against the 'Tees. First pitch on Saturday is set for 6:35 p.m. Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 5.52) will start on the mound for the Manatees, while Scottie Allen (6-3, 4.11) will toe the rubber for Tampa. If they make the World Series. I doubt DH is high on their priority list. Lol. Seriously? (Ramirez would displace Prado in this scenario and play 3B. The ability for his bat to play DH in the playoffs is an added bonus) Yeah, LOL. My point was since there isn't a DH in the National League playoffs they would have to make the World Series for that to be considered an "added bonus". -
Final: Daytona 3, Brevard County 1 Manatees nipped by Cubs on 4th of July Brevard manages just three hits in 3-1 defeat By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/2/2/46972822/cuts/Macias_4.7_1_m7d5renp_0nfrifj8.JPG Manatees third baseman Brandon Macias, seen here in a game from earlier this season, doubled and scored the only run in Brevard County's 3-1 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Celebrations for the Fourth of July were abundant, but the Brevard County Manatees were not able to celebrate a win as they fell 3-1 to the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. After Brevard County (8-5 second half, 45-35 overall) starting pitcher Brent Suter (7-5, 3.01 ERA) retired the first eight men that he faced, Pin-Chieh Chen popped up a bunt that fell for an infield single in the bottom of the third inning. Tim Saunders followed with a two-run home run that put Daytona (8-4, 43-35) on the board first and ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. Suter was able to escape further damage in the frame as he left two runners on base after allowing back-to-back singles to Wes Darvill and Javier Baez following the Saunders homer. The Manatees' southpaw also yielded a solo homer to Dustin Geiger in the sixth as the Cubs took a 3-0 lead. The night ended for Suter after 5.2 innings as the lefty allowed six hits, struck out three and tied a season-high with three walks. Matt Miller took the ball for the final 2.1 innings for the Manatees and had one of his best outings of the season as he held Cubs scoreless with just one hit allowed and no walks. He also fanned two men. Brevard County had trouble figuring out Daytona starting pitcher Ben Wells as he held the Manatees scoreless for seven innings, while allowing just two hits and a walk. The 'Tees avoided the shutout in the top of the ninth inning when Brandon Macias doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for the lone run of the night for Brevard County. Along with Macias, Mitch Haniger and Greg Hopkins collected the other two hits on the night for the Manatees. The two teams will return to Space Coast Stadium in Viera on Friday night for the rubber match of their three-game set, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will send Damien Magnifico (0-0, 4.66) to the mound, where he will be opposed by Daytona's Zach Cates (7-6, 4.03). There's a difference between being a big dude and having comic books arms. Frank Thomas had those comic book arms that strangely only seemed to exist in the 1990s and that no era has had before or since. Adam Dunn and Dave Kingman look/looked nothing like Thomas. Apparently they still grow like that in Cuba... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hWRpOrBTg20/UCkVr5yWkRI/AAAAAAAANa4/AH0PRuOdiLI/s1600/puigyasiel.jpg http://ww3.hdnux.com/photos/20/04/16/4211614/3/628x471.jpg -
I just had this same conversation with a friend earlier this week. I believe putting together an organization that perennially finishes in the middle-tier is the easiest (and least recommended) way of operating in both MLB and the NBA. Compiling a roster that can compete to finish around .500 seems like an easier step then breaking things down to put yourself in a better position down the road. It is a trap in some respects since you always are trying to make a move or two to "get over the hump" instead of consciously taking a step back into the lower tier for a couple of years while building up talent and organizational depth that can move you into the top tier in the future. Regardless, I really enjoyed the article and it is the best synopsis I have seen of the Brewers organization from anyone in the media.

I would be thrilled if the Brewers were able to land both Skaggs and Davidson. But lets assume they say no to both. I think Skaggs carries considerable value on his own and I think the Brewers should look to tack on another moderate-high upside pitcher or two in the deal. I could see something along these lines... Brewers Trade: Gallardo, and pick any two bullpen arms D'Backs Trade: Skaggs, and two of the following: David Holmberg, Andrew Chafin, Ben Eckels This type of trade would be a big step toward filling the young pitching void in the organization, including picking up at least a couple of much needed LHP's. -

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 1 'Tees shave off Cubs with five-run seventh Barnes throws seven scoreless in Brevard's 5-1 win over Daytona By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS VIERA, Fla. - On and off the field, the Brevard County Manatees hosted a successful "Pack the Park" night on Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium, by taking a 5-1 win over the Daytona Cubs and by helping the St. Baldrick's Foundation raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. A total of 19 coaches, players and staff members volunteered to have their heads shaved in support of St. Baldrick's over the course of the game, while a still undetermined amount of money was raised by St. Baldrick's to help fund childhood cancer research grants. On the field, Manatees' (8-4 second half, 45-34 overall) starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (6-2, 3.44 ERA) hurled seven scoreless innings in his longest start of the season, as he held Daytona's (5-6, 42-35) offense to just three hits. Barnes did not issue a walk and struck out three batters as he earned the win when Brevard all five of its runs in the bottom half of the seventh. In the seventh, Yadiel Rivera started the big inning with a one-out triple. Rivera then scored on a Nick Ramirez single to get Brevard County on the board and break the scoreless tie. Ramirez was erased on a Mitch Haniger fielder's choice, but Haniger eventually scored on Cameron Garfield's single up the middle after advancing on a wild pitch. Cody Hawn kept the rally going with an RBI double to plate Garfield and then came across himself on a Greg Hopkins single, to make it 4-0. Hopkins was able to advance to third on the play thanks to a poor throw by Daytona left fielder Zeke DeVoss, who was charged with his second error of the game. Ben McMahan took responsibility for driving the final run home, in the form of Hopkins, on a single. Rivera, Haniger and Hopkins each had two hits, while the other six hitters in Brevard County's line-up also recorded one hit each. Dan Meadows took over for Barnes and went two innings as he surrendered one run in the ninth as the Cubs broke up the shutout. He also walked four and struck out three. Both teams will play the middle contest of their three-game set on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach at 6:35 p.m. The series will conclude on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. back at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. For the Manatees, the reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Brent Suter (7-4, 2.87 ERA) will toe the rubber. The Cubs will counter with right-hander Ben Wells (5-6, 3.62 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Every Manatees hitter had at least one hit tonight, so I figured why not list them all for tonight's report: BC Hitters Brandon Macias: 1-5, 2B, .229 Yadiel Rivera: 2-4, 3B, .262 Nick Ramirez: 1-4, RBI, BB, .237 Mitch Haniger: 2-5, SB, .262 Cameron Garfield: 1-4, RBI, .257 Cody Hawn: 1-3, 2B, RBI BB, .249 Gregory Hopkins: 2-4, 2B, RBI, .243 Ben McMahan: 1-4, RBI, .284 D'Vontrey Richardson: 1-4, .250 Yadiel Rivera was batting .216 at the end of May. Since the start of June he is hitting .351 (33-94) over that span. He also hasn't committed an error in his last 29 games. BC Pitchers Jacob Barnes (W, 6-2): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR, 3.44 ERA Daniel Meadows: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR, 1.08 ERA Barnes again didn't put up much in the way of strikeout numbers, but he had an impressive outing otherwise. All three hits he gave up were singles, including one that was an infield single. One other note: Brevard County Manatees Manager Joe Ayrault was ejected by the 1B umpire in the 7th. It seems that many MLB teams are very secretive and operate very much under the radar when it comes to potential trades/transactions. And then on the other hand you have the D'backs who seem to have their potential trade targets and trade chips communicated to the entire baseball world. I am not sure to what extent it is intentional on their part, but I guess on some level it could be argued that leaking potential trade chips within your own organization may bring additional unexpected suitors to the table. For instance if another team is high on a player like Skaggs, and now believe he is available, they may potentially enter the bidding and increase his trade value. -

This is my mindset exactly. At this point I think they should cut their losses and focus on transactions that improve the team long term. I would be surprised if Corey signed anything beyond a one year deal this off-season, and I have a hard time picturing him operating at 100% at the beginning of next season.

Final: Brevard County 8, Lakeland 0 Brevard blanks Flying Tigers in rain-shortened game Second game rescheduled for August 20 in Lakeland By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/4/0/49621840/cuts/Haniger_5.31_cgq4oszn_flud46mw.JPG Manatees center fielder Mitch Haniger, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in Brevard County's 8-0 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) LAKELAND, Fla - It took over 24 hours and it was only six innings, but the Brevard County Manatees completed an 8-0 rain-shortened shutout of the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Monday night at Joker Marchant Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader that was scheduled to be played on Monday will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Lakeland on Tuesday, August 20 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Manatees (7-4 second half, 44-34 overall) started the game on Sunday with a bang as they scored three runs out of the gate in the first inning. Yadiel Rivera doubled to left with one out and then Nick Ramirez followed with a walk. Mitch Haniger would then step in and clear the bases with his third homer of the season. Ben McMahan led off the second with a single and two batters later Lance Roenicke followed with a one-out single of his own. Brandon Macias then brought both of them home with his 14th double of the season to make it a 5-0 game. Two batters later, Ramirez plated Macias with a double of his own to make it a 6-0 game. It was at that point where the game was suspended on Sunday night. Manatees' starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta worked just one inning as he walked two and struck out just one. The strikeout would be the only hitter Scarpetta would actually retire as the other two outs in the inning came when catcher Rafael Neda threw out two Lakeland (3-7, 33-45) baserunners attempting to steal second. When the game resumed on Monday night, Chad Pierce took over on the mound and he threw five scoreless innings as he yielded four hits and two walks, while striking out six. In his 18 appearances out of the bullpen this season, Pierce is 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA compared to his three starts, where he is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA. Since the All-Star break, Pierce has allowed just one earned run in 11.1 innings of relief with 12 strikeouts. Brevard County tacked two more runs on in the fifth as McMahan and Neda both connected with two-out RBI singles to give the 'Tees an 8-0 lead. Rivera led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4, while Macias, Haniger and McMahan added two hits each as the Manatees tallied 13 hits in just six innings. Following an off-day on Tuesday, the Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night to host the Daytona Cubs (7-3, 42-34) beginning at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County Box Score BC Hitters Brandon Macias: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI Yadiel Rivera: 3-4, 2B Rivera has had multiple hits in 5 of his last 10 games and with 3 hits tonight raised his BA to .258 Nick Ramirez: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB Mitch Haniger: 2-3, HR, 3 RBI, SB Ben McMahan: 2-3, RBI BC Pitchers Cody Scarpetta: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR Chad Pierce (W, 4-3): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR Pierce now has 69 strikeouts in 57.2 inning pitched this season. While he had some rough outings earlier in the season as a starter, he has pitched much better out of the bullpen and continued to put up impressive K numbers overall. Brevard County Play-by-Play

I recommend refraining from the using "You are ____" when disagreeing with a fellow poster. One positive aspect of BF.net is that while there is a great variance of opinions among the members, most disagreements on a given topic are framed as counterarguments and do not cross into personal attacks or ad hominem. Also, using terms like "Son" and "Kid" carry a very condescending connotation, and don't reflect well on your overall argument. This is a great forum for information sharing and debate, and I certainly hope you continue to be a part of it. Just realize the best way to become a respected poster is to refute ideas without attacking the writer.

Perfect trading partner - Dodgers?
Eye Black replied to LouisEly's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I posted a quote from MLBTR about the Cubs having talks about Samardzija with the DBacks and they mentioned Skaggs and Bradley....Apparently the phone was hung up on and the talks ceased. Arizona isn't willing to trade those 2. And I don't blame them. Skaggs can help the team today. In fact they may have him in their plans for this season, but by keeping him in AAA they can limit his innings and potentially get him to pitch in September And October. While I am sure Arizona would not trade Archie Bradley, a potential future Ace, I don't think the same can be said of Skaggs. Skaggs seems to be a potential trade candidate. If they can use him in a trade to significantly upgrade their current roster immediately, I think they would consider it. Especially if they would be getting back 2.5 years of starting pitching from a player the caliber of Gallardo. EDIT: I don't think it is likely the D-Backs would trade Skaggs for Gallardo without possibly getting more out of the deal, I just don't think Skaggs is completely untouchable in the same way as Bradley. I don't think the Marlins management of Jose Fernandez innings has any correlation with how the D'backs would manage Archie Bradley if he was pitching at the MLB level. It seems pitching development and innings management varies significantly from team-to-team. -

(Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) LAKELAND, Fla. - After taking a 4-3 in the top of the eleventh, the Brevard County Manatees fell 5-4 in eleven innings to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium on Saturday night. With the game tied 3-3 and heading into the eleventh, Cody Hawn hit his second extra-innings homer in four days as his one-out solo blast gave the Manatees (6-4 second half, 43-34 overall) a one-run lead. Entering the bottom of the eleventh, 'Tees reliever Santo Manzanillo, who was just transferred to the team from Huntsville earlier in the day, was entering his second inning of work. He started off the frame by allowed back-to-back singles to Lakeland's (3-6, 33-44) Jason Krizan and Corey Jones. Manzanillo then hit John Murrian with a pitch to load the bases. The Flying Tigers would score the tying run with Brandon Loy at the plate as Manzanillo uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Krizan to score and Jones and Murrian to move up to third and second, respectively. Loy grounded out to short for the first out of the inning and then Rashad Brown was intentionally walked to set up the force at any base or a possible double play. That opportunity would not come as Manzanillo would issue a walk to Tyler Hanover to bring home the winning run. Lakeland got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning against Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-0, 4.66 ERA) when Steven Moya hit a two-out, two-run homer. Those would be the only earned runs that Magnifico would allow as the Flying Tigers scored a run in the fourth on a Corey Jones sacrifice fly that was unearned thanks to a passed ball earlier in Jones' at-bat that put the runner at third. Magnifico went six innings and yielded nine hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out five in his second start with the Manatees. Stephen Peterson relieved Magnifico and threw three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Brevard County took a one-run lead with a three-run second inning that started with Cameron Garfield's 14th double of the season. Garfield moved to third on a ground out by Hawn and then scored on a single to left off the bat of Greg Hopkins. Two batters later with two outs, Lance Roenicke stepped up and hit his fourth home run of the season to left field to make it a 3-2 game. Roenicke went 2-for-4 out of the number nine spot in the order while T.J. Mittelstaedt set the table in the lead-off spot by going 3-for-5 with a double. For the Manatees, the loss drops their record to 21-9 in one-run games this season and it is just Brevard County's second loss to Lakeland in ten games thus far this season. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brent Suter became the first Brevard County Manatees pitcher to record a nine-inning, complete game win in over four years as the 'Tees edged the Clearwater Threshers, 2-1 on Friday night at Bright House Field. Suter (7-4, 2.87) scattered five hits and allowed just one run on a two-out solo homer to Brock Stassi in the second inning. The southpaw tallied five strikeouts and walked just one batter, with the free pass coming with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The 2012 31st round pick out of Harvard University went the distance on 112 pitches with 78 strikes. The walk that Suter issued in the ninth to Carlos Alonso made things interesting as it put the tying run on base with the winning run coming to the plate in the form of Kelly Dugan. Suter though was able to punch out Dugan on three pitches to end the threat, the game and wrap up the complete game. Jimmy Nelson was the last Manatee to throw a nine-inning, complete game on May 18, 2012 against the Fort Myers Miracle, but that came in a losing effort. Before Friday night, Evan Anundsen was the last Brevard County pitcher to win a nine-inning, complete game when he hurled a no-hitter on the road against the Daytona Cubs on April 28, 2009. Eight of Suter's ten starts with Brevard County in 2013 have been quality starts and he now ranks seventh in the Florida State League in ERA and fifth in WHIP. The Manatees (6-3 second half, 43-33 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as they were able to string together three consecutive hits against Clearwater (3-5, 38-38) starter Mario Hollands to start the inning. Cameron Garfield led off the frame with a single to left and then Nick Ramirez followed with his 14th double of the year to put runners at the corners. Ben McMahan then brought Garfield home as he reached on an infield single in the hole at shortstop. Greg Hopkins moved both Ramirez and McMahan over 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out, but the 'Tees weren't able to capitalize. Brandon Macias flew out to left and McMahan was doubled off of second base to end the inning. After Clearwater scored in the bottom of the second on the homer by Stassi, the game remained tied at 1-1 through five. Chadwin Stang led off the sixth with a triple off of Hollands into the left-center field gap and would come home two batters later on a RBI single through the right side of the infield by Yadiel Rivera. At the plate for the Manatees, Garfield led the way as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored. It was Garfield's fourth three-hit game of the season. McMahan also had a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-3. Brevard County's six-game road trip will continue as they will begin a three-game set with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (2-6, 32-44) on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Manatees have an 8-1 record against the Flying Tigers thus far this season. GAME TWO: Clearwater 2, Brevard County 1 Manatees edged 2-1 in second game of double dip Clearwater walks-off with win in the eighth to split doubleheader By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/5/8/52012258/cuts/Stang_5.31_xizwfn25_ae333xl5.JPG Manatees right fielder Chadwin Stang, seen here in a game from earlier this season, drove in the only run in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with a solo homer to lead off the top of the sixth for Brevard County in their 2-1 loss to the Clearwater Threshers at Bright House Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) CLEARWATER, Fla. - After the Brevard County Manatees won the first game of Thursday's doubleheader in extra innings, the Clearwater Threshers returned the favor with a 2-1 walk-off win in game two at Bright House Field. Entering the bottom of the eighth, Manatees' (5-3 second half, 42-33 overall) reliever Matt Miller was entering his fourth inning of work and retired two of the first three batters he faced in the frame with a walk to Harold Martinez sandwiched between the two outs. Lefty Stephen Peterson was then called upon to face the left-handed hitting Peter Lavin. Peterson proceded to walk Lavin to put two on with two out and stayed in the game to face the right-handed hitting Carlos Alonso. Alonso would come up big with a single to left to score Martinez and give the Threshers (3-4, 38-37) the win. Tyler Cravy (1-1, 3.81) got the spot start for the Manatees and pitched well for four innings with the exception of a solo homer that he allowed to Jonathan Roof with two outs in the bottom of the second. Cravy scattered five hits in his four innings of work and did not walk a batter, while striking out four. Brevard County's offense was held in check by Threshers' starting pitcher Ethan Stewart as the southpaw hurled five shutout innings and allowed just two hits, while walking one and fanning four. The Manatees finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when reliever Ryan O'Sullivan entered the game for Stewart. O'Sullivan would be greeted rudely by the first batter he faced as Chadwin Stang led off the frame with his third homer of the season to make it a 1-1 game that would eventually go into extras. Overall though, Brevard County was held to just four hits and one walk in game two. The two teams will close out their three-game series on Friday night at Bright House Field beginning at 6:30 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-by-Play -

GAME ONE: Brevard County 6, Clearwater 4 Brevard takes twinbill opener in extras Hawn's homer in the eighth propels 'Tees past Threshers, 6-4 By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/0/52009370/cuts/Hawn_5.26_g6sfnulq_jdhu40ts.JPG Manatees first baseman Cody Hawn, seen here in a game from earlier this season, hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winner as Brevard County defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 6-4 in the first game of Thursday night's doubleheader at Bright House Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cody Hawn's first home run since May 22 couldn't have come at a better time as his two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning helped the Brevard County Manatees defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 6-4 in the first game of Thursday night's doubleheader at Bright House Field. A one-out single by Cameron Garfield got things going for the 'Tees (5-2 first half, 42-32 overall) in the eighth. Garfield was then lifted for a pinch runner in the form of Chadwin Stang. Stang's speed would not be needed though as Hawn stepped in and took the 2-2 offering from Clearwater's Colton Miller and deposited over the right field fence for his eighth homer of the season. Kevin Shackelford came out of the bullpen for Brevard to try and close it out in the bottom of the eighth and he would do so as he retired the Threshers (2-4, 37-37) in order to earn his second save of 2013. Both teams got on the board right away in the first inning as the Manatees plated two in the first and the Threshers scored one. Brevard County's first run scored on a RBI single from Mitch Haniger that drove in T.J. Mittelstaedt. Mittelstaedt and the 'Tees benefitted from two wild pitches earlier in the inning from Clearwater starting pitcher Perci Garner to put Mittelstaedt at third. Haniger would later score on a fielder's choice. The Threshers made it a 2-2 game when Chris Serritella led off the bottom of the second with a home run off of Manatees' starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (5-2, 3.97). Brevard County took the lead back in the top of the third on a two-out single from Greg Hopkins that plated Nick Ramirez. The 'Tees padded their lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a RBI double by Yadiel Rivera, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Clearwater though would tie the game up once again in the bottom of the fourth and it started with a one-out triple off the bat of Brock Stassi. Harold Martinez then drew a walk and after Jose Mojica flew out to left, Barnes allowed a two-out single to Peter Lavin that cleared the bases and made it 4-4. Barnes went five innings total and allowed six hits, while walking three and fanning two. Andre Lamontagne relieved Barnes and threw two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. Despite striking out 11 times, the Manatees were able to record ten hits. Garfield, Hawn and Brandon Macias had two each.
