  1. I know the numbers. I also know that a good bit of what goes on in baseball is psychological rather than independent random trials. Changing things helps, sometimes, because it affects the players mindset.
  2. They need to get a day off because they are rotten vs. RH pitching.
  3. Please get us a LH bat, Dougie. If you don't want to make a trade, we have a couple in Nashville that might serve.
  4. Branyan is pretty consistent. 40% strikeouts. .850 OPS vs righties if he's getting any kind of playing time; that's better than any option outside of prince.
  5. I think pitchers like to throw to catchers that buy dinner for them after the game. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. yeah, it's "stupid good". Not only is he the youngest guy in Huntsville, only one guy at Brevard is younger, and I think it's by a few months. My hope is he is the CF-leadoff hitter of the future, though it's possible he could be displaced by Ford a year or two later. He still needs to develop more power, which is possible given his youth. I think he's the second best "son of a major leaguer" in the system.
  7. I guess a half-dozen years in the majors is enough to retire on, if you aren't buying bentleys or heroin.
  8. Russ, I did view this as giving the regulars an occasional break while they weren't swinging well. I'd hope that by July they'd only be getting a break because of a needed rest. Really, grasping at straws to find some way to make the RH-LH differential less, because it is huge right now.
  9. I think weeks is totally messed up by hitting leadoff. Ned should just tell him to forget about taking pitches "for the good of the team" because if he starts swinging at some of those strikes, the outcome probably will be for the good of the team. Braun is hacking too much. I believe he's doing it more than last season. Can you corroborate that?

  11. I know Counsell will probably regress sooner rather than later, but he does have an altered stance...and he is hitting about .340 vs. righties this season. If he regresses, stop putting him into the lineup.
  12. for clarification, I'd demote gwynn or kapler if I brought up Branyan. Probably Gwynn, but I didn't want this to devolve into a for-or-against Gwynn thread. I'd love to bring up Dillon, too, but he can't help out with a partial-platoon at 3b.
  13. It seems like many on this board think Gamel will end up at 1B. He might be in the majors around the time Fielder leaves and many seem to think he would be best at 1B given his defensive shortcomings. Gamel better be in the majors before Prince leaves. If he keeps tearing it up, he should get called up next season. All the more reason to try him at a couple other positions over the next year or so, so he can be more versatile.
  14. Branyan needs to hit .225 to be pretty darn valuable. He can still play 3b fine. And he can PH and play OF, too. Bottom line, he outhits all but one of the current roster vs. RH pitching.
  15. Give him a start a week at each 2b and SS, vs. RH pitching. maybe more than that if the brewers are facing all righties in a week. and bring branyan up to get a start a week at 3b vs. righties. our RH-hitting INF are doing poorly vs. RH pitching. Gotta do something. vs. lefties the brewers outhit their opponents by a sizeable margin. vs. righties, the brewers get outhit by their opponents by a sizeable margin.
  16. you do know that nunez hits for about the same average as Branyan, but without the power and the walks, right? He does field well though. (pared back quote --1992)
  17. Branyan can post an .850 OPS vs. Righties. How many other guys on the roster have a good chance to do that? One, Prince Fielder. That alone means he'd have value. Whether you want to have him solely as a pinch hitter, or spot him at 3b and the corners is the only decision, imo.
  18. small sample size.
  19. Gamel has 8 errors in 25 games. that still doesn't play.
  20. Gamel up to .367 last time I looked. It's only 98 AB, but I didn't think he had the capability to hit that well. 8 errors in 25 games, though.
  21. Is there a 1b who's been at extended spring training? there aren't too many 1b in the system, so releasing alonso before mid-season seems odd.
  22. defensive shortcomings? I was pretty sure the managers voted him best defensive 2b in their league a couple of years ago.
  23. If Aguilar gets bumped up, does Wes Etheridge also? He's already 23 in A-ball, and he has a 14/1 K/BB in 11.7 innings after today's game. first of all, I'm not advocating anyone gets moved up today. second, does etheridge have the stuff to be a real prospect? I don't know.
  24. no one is blocking Laporta at Nashville, because none of them are prospects of his stature. A half-season at Nashville makes it much more likely he opens 2009 with the brewers.
  25. an analysis of michael brantley would be interesting, particularly if it discussed what he needs to do to increase power.
