  1. FTJ, I was one of those people begging the team to extend Sheets last offseason when we had the chance to do it for far less money than it will cost now. Sometimes you have to take a chance and the chance is worth taking on a pitcher that is the caliber of Ben Sheets. Any contract that a pitcher receives is risky but you cant build your staff around a bunch of Suppans and hope to outslug teams every night. Melvin seems more interested in beer league baseball than having a top flight stud leading his staff. Ben Sheets is irreplaceable and it is sad that Melvin and Attanassio are clueless to this fact.
  2. Derek Lowe is not a good enough replacement for Sheets especially when you factor in that he will likely cost more than Suppan. Paying for mediocrity like Suppan, Gagne and potentially Lowe will get you nowhere. Paying the money for Sheets and not mediocre replacements is clearly the way to go.
  3. Suppan is a number 4 or 5 starter not a 2 or 3. Sheets is the only ace with Gallardo also having the ability to be a future ace. Parra seems too inconsistent to be considered anything more than a 3 which is solid and Bush and McClung are 5s recent success notwithstanding. Sheets is the most important player on this team and losing him would be a major blow to our chances of future success.
  4. Thanks to management not being proactive with Sheets we will probably lose him. I guess Melvin thinks he can compete with the likes of Bush, Suppan, and McClung. Good luck with that thinking. This is why I have little faith that Melvin is capable of putting together a championship level pitching staff. Offering a closer like Cordero 42 mil for 4 yrs and paying Suppan 10 mil per year as well as giving big money to a stiff like Gagne while ignoring your staffs ace is assinine and a big reason why Jack Z should replace Melvin. I can just see Derek Lowe being handed a 3 yr 40 million contract while Sheets takes his Cy Young abilities elsewhere. Ben Sheets is irreplaceable.
  5. This whole situation is very sad to me. Its obvious from these comments that Sheets has wanted the team to engage him in long term contract discussions and I bet he was willing to give us a nice discount like Peavy gave the Padres. Unfortunately Melvin and Attanassio havent had the guts to take a chance and sign Benny before the season. Ben Sheets is the best pitcher this team has ever had and he will be impossible to replace. He is an ace and the leader of this staff. Sheets is also a great clubhouse presence who seems very well liked by his teamates. I really hope that ownership comes to its senses and offers Sheets a deal in the neighborhood of 5 yr 80 million during the all star break. Once he files for free agency he is probably as good as gone. Who is this team gonna replace Sheets with anyway? Is Melvin gonna give an average free agent like Derek Lowe a 3 yr 40 million type of deal this offseason? The thing that bothers me most about this situation is that this organization doesnt seem to realize that an ace starter is the most important asset to have in order to be playoff contenders most years. Its great to have young stars like Braun and Fielder to build around but its very difficult to compete for championships when you have a bunch of number 4 and 5 starters in your rotation. Bottom line is Melvin and Attanassio have dropped the ball big time in regards to Sheets and losing him will likely hurt thgis team big time for years to come. Please Mark A come to your senses and open the checkbook for Sheets as soon as possible!
  6. I hope that Cox retires after this season and Ned goes to Atlanta.
  7. I fear that McClungs luck will run out soon. He has trouble locating his pitches and that was evident in this last start. I am more than happy with the job he has done but dont think it can last much longer.
  8. I have a huge fear of trading LaPorta or Gamel to get Sabathia. If we acquire him it will definitely only be a rental since there is no way will pay a pitcher that is as big as Fielder and has tons of innings pitched the last few seasons. The only way I would make a trade like this is if we can avoid giving up our top prospects. I would offer a package of Hardy/Hall, Salome, Gwynn and maybe even Jeffress. Under no circumstances would I give up future superstars like LaPorta or Gamel for 2 months of anyone.
  9. No doubt its Jeter who is the most overrated player in the game.
  10. Sheets is irreplaceable. Other than Gallardo we have no other pitchers capable of being in the same class as Sheets. If we dont resign him and look for free agent replacements we will be shopping in the Suppan isle of the market and be forced to way overpay for an average pitcher like Derek Lowe who will command at least 10 million per. Bottom line is number one starters are the hardest thing in baseball to acquire and once you have one like Sheets you must do all you can to keep him if you want to be a playoff caliber ballclub for years to come.
  11. Sheets is the guy this team needs to lock up. I dont know why it seems as if we have made no effort to lock Ben up. The longer we wait the less likely we are to keep him. He is a legitimate ace starter and the one guy on this team that will be impossible to replace. So please Mark A get Sheets signed now!
  12. I really hate to see the yankees suffering like this. Hopefully they wont make the playoffs now.
  13. I totally agree with this. Obviously Yost is a complete horror and needs to go but Melvin isnt exactly doing a good job either. Gagane and Cameron have both been awful as have his lousy bullpen acquisitions other than Torres. Between Gagne and Cameron Melvin has wasted 15 million, the type of money that could be used to resign Sheets. So basically he has wasted money on a bunch of stiff veterans while making no attempt to resign our number one starter who will be impossible to replace. Throw in the fact that he is too damn stubborn to fire yost and it is time to get rid of both Melvin and yost. Jack Z is largely responsible for the success of this team and an argument can be made that he is far more important to future success as well. Its time to promote him to GM and let him hire a real manager.
  14. What a dream it must be to be a hitter in this park.
  15. Is Rickie only out for the two weeks or is this a serious knee injury that the team is covering up. I hope he comes back soon because I for one still believe in Rickie Weeks.
  16. "We had the guy we wanted in there. When that happens, you know they beat your best." That is another quote from yost in regards to Mota. Since when is Mota a good pitcher that yost should have complete confidence in. Even Haudricourt who never questions yost seems to realize that yost blew this game completely.
  17. This team is good enough to make a run at the playoffs but this dope is always making clueless moves. If there is any ballpark where you need to play your best defensive outfielder its Coors Field which has by far the most outfield space. kapler isnt bad defensively but Cameron is golg glove quality and needed at the very least to be in there in the late innings. As far as taking Villy out and putting Mota in well what can I say; its a classic yost move. Quotes such as "it was a save situation" and "mota has been pitching the 8th inning" just go to prove that ned is a complete dope that is incapable of learnings how to manage.
  18. If there is any stadium where cameron needs to play its Colorado. The outfield just has too much room to cover to not play your best defensive player. Also Villy was pitching well and should have started the 8th inning, but that would go against the ned script of mota in the 8th and torres in the ninth no matter what. That is why ned is clueless and will never ever learn. Somehow someway this team continues to play horribly on the road. Every time you start to think this team has things turned around they go on the road and implode as usual.
  19. Nothing is more frustrating to watch than a pitcher with major control issues. I love the first two picks but Frederickson doesnt excite me at all.
  20. Why exactly did Yost use Kapler as the pinch hitter with the bases loaded instead of Branyan? He got lucky that Reynolds made a terrible error and we were able to win the game but it was a terrible decision by ned. Also why did Counsell replace Hardy instead of Branyan replacing Hall in the top of the ninth? If we are making defensive substitutions how about taking out the guy that has made the most costly errors on this team. We may have won that game last night but it was despite of ned.
  21. TLB yes sweeps are uncommon but the Brewers seem to be too happy winning 2 of 3 when the third game is within reach. Nice to see the team complete a sweep and hopefully they continue to play like they have this weekend.
  22. This is a perfect example of how this team is happy winning two of three instead of going for the sweep. I have no issue with giving guys days off but so many backups on one day makes no sense. Im sure if we lose this game we will hear multiple quotes on how happy they are to win 2 of 3.
  23. Like I said in an earlier post the differences were startling when I was watching the Brewers play the pirates on fsn pittsburgh. They were showing several Fielder HRs from last year at PNC park and after seeing those clips followed by seeing Prince this year the differences are very extreme. I wish I could post those images but trust me my eyes are not deceiving me. Prince looked big and muscular last year but not obese by any stretch. This year he looks much much larger and I really believe that his lack of conditioning is the reason why he is struggling so much.
  24. The biggest problem with Prince is that he is grossly overweight. I was watching one of the games against the pirates on FSN Pittsburgh when they showed clips of Fielder HRs against Pittsburgh from last season at PNC. The differences in his appearance from last year to this year are startling. Last year Prince looked like a big athletic guy. This year he looks like a beached whale. He is at least 50 lbs more than he was last year and that is why he isn't the same player. Unless he gets himself in shape he will never again be the player he was last season. I think he is shot for this season in terms of all star type numbers. He will never be able to drop enough weight in season to make a big enough difference. The worst part is that his trade value may very well plummet to the point that we are unable to get the bounty of young pitching in return for him next offseason. I was hoping to trade him to the Dodgers for a package of Billingsley, Broxton, and LaRoche but I am not sure we can get that type of return for Fielder at this point.
