1. I would be more optimistic if the talent gap between us and the Cubs wasn't so huge. We built a lead the first half with a lot of smoke and mirrors, now that we have squandered it, our roster simply doesn't have the horses to keep up with the Cubs, I'm sad to say.
2. Because one start right before the trade deadline tells the tale of a 3-4 year sample size? No. But his last handful of starts have been...uh, unspectacular shall we say. That would lead one to possibly think that perhaps something is awry mechanically, or he is nursing a nagging injury. If you are paying big bucks for a 2 month rental, do you want to take any chance those 2 months begin with a DL trip, or two or three more bad starts while he "figures things out"? If your answer is yes, I can't help you.
3. Darvish's "performance" tonight should put to rest any thoughts of this happening, he got lit up like a Christmas tree.
4. I think they had to wait for the medicals to check out on the Cordell/Swarzak trade. And when they did, late at night, they pulled the trigger on a Sonny Gray trade involving Phillips and Hader. Maybe Stearns wanted to see one more start from Gray, and he looked good last night. So, knowing he had a replacement for Hader with Swarzak, he made the Gray deal. Just a shot in the dark. I am probably way off base.
5. I agree with TPlush, if the plan all along was to bring Brinson up to face the lefties, no way do you start him in the game tonight and pull him after half an inning. I think we are looking at two possibilities. One, Braun was pulled tonight not because of the lead, but because he tweaked something and they fear he's going to be on the DL. Or, there is a trade in the works. Maybe Stearns wanted one last look at Sonny Gray tonight and liked what he saw. Oakland wants a CF prospect, that much is known. Maybe it's gonna end up that we're getting Verlander somehow before his next start? If I were a betting man, I would lean toward last night's game being the last time we see Maverick play for us. I just have this feeling that what if Swarzak is replacing Hader who is heading to Oakland with Phillips for Gray?
6. I'm not trying to rain on the parade, truly, I'm not, but this is one of those games that frustrates me. Obviously, the 4-0 lead is great, nobody argues that. The frustrating part to me is seeing what Braun can do when he actually plays, but yet he is just so fragile at this point that you can't really pencil him in for more than 4 games a week. It's a calf, or a wrist, or a strain of something. For all of Braun's skills, the best ability is still availability, and he lacks that in a big way. I wish there was a way to remedy that, because when he plays and he is on, the team is simply that much better.
7. Is there any indication that Sean Manaea is even available? If so, go for him, quickly, he looks like a great fit. I just can't believe he is available.
8. Detroit got back absolute garbage. I mean, pure junk. Arizona's GM should have been holding a gun and wearing a ski mask.
9. I like Gray, probably more than most. I'd offer up Ray, Ortiz, Isan Diaz and a Coulter/Medieros type.
10. I'd like to keep Hader and Brinson, especially Brinson. I am REALLY hoping some other team is foolish enough to give us anything for Kodi Medeiros. The only way that guy ever sees the inside of Miller Park is if he buys a ticket.
11. Brewers get RP David Hernandez from the Angels Angels get SP Taylor Jungmann, OF Monte Harrison from Milwaukee
12. We have a farm system full of prospects, for exactly this purpose, of trading them for established players. You know the Cubs and Cardinals don't take the Brewers seriously and are going to make some major moves. We are playing shockingly well, and have a healthy lead at the break while the rest of the division is having a down year, if this isn't the time to "go for it", when is? Quintana is going to take a lot, but short of deGrom, Archer or Stroman, he's the best option out there. Ray, Ortiz, Isan Diaz, and Gatewood for Quintana. Maybe that gets it done, maybe not, but we'd be foolish to not ask.
13. I still think we need at least 1 good bullpen arm before we overwork Knebel. I'd call up the Mets and try and get Addison Reed. He's having a great year, has closer experience and they would probably love to get out of paying him the rest of the year. Give them Taylor Jungmann and Medeiros or Gatewood and call it a day.
14. I sure hope they gave the fans a little something for sticking around through that long of a rain delay tonight. Wow.
15. I go after Gray and Ryan Madsen, with an offer of: Corey Ray Isan Diaz Marcos Diplan Kodi Medieros We will probably have to throw in another B or C type prospect, but I start with that.
16. I know nothing about Leatherface or whoever this pitcher is, but I have a feeling he's going to be taking one for the team today.
17. There is no world that exists in which I want any part of Lucroy in a Brewer uniform.
18. Maybe Lucroy will want to come to Milwaukee so he can finally play for a contender.
19. I would call the Angels and ask about David Hernandez, they're not going anywhere this year and their farm system is so bad any of our top 30 prospects would rank in their top 10, if not 5.
20. I have nothing against the pick, if we were going to pick a position player, it's fine but I am a bit disappointed that we didn't add a high ceiling pitcher. Our system is stocked with above average offensive talent, I just have this fear that over the next few years the big league club loses a lot of 10-8 games.
21. Oddly, that game also features Counsell and a ninth inning blow up by a guy named Torres.
22. At this point I assume he actually wanted to sign the extension but just kept dropping the pen.
23. Probably, but let me have this dream for one day!
