  1. I simply cannot believe Bauer will be getting a contract at $30 million per year given his track record. Am I taking crazy pills? Could just be his agent planting a false story and he's going to end up signing very late (or not at all) at a much lower deal.
  2. I think some of you are greatly exaggerating the defensive and offensive differences between 2B and 3B. I completely get not wanting to mess with something that's already working, but if he is a Gold Glove defender at 2B he would likely be a premier defender at 3B as well. If you think Wong's bat won't play at 3B, then I hate to point out that our current options are Luis Urias and Daniel Robertson. Plus, setting aside the platoon/flexibility issues and the fact that we are probably not going to have a static infield, the overall offense in that scenario for the "normal" starters would be Vogelbach/Hiura/Wong, versus Hiura/Wong/(Urias/Robertson). If we are getting good years from Wong offensively (around a .335 wOBA), then combined with his excellent defense at 3B that is more or less one of Manny Machado's down years. Hardly "unplayable" at 3B. I think it is clearly at least possible that Stearns has this in mind. Maybe unlikely.
  3. I think Shaw's three-year numbers are a bit skewed by 2018, considering he is a player who seemingly fell off a cliff starting in 2019. Plus a Brewers reunion seems unlikely. Robertson looks good on those charts, but his career is a relatively small sample size. I'm not sure we can rely on him to hit that well over a full season. Asdrubal Cabrera is the most attractive to me. He always seems underrated considering how well he hits for a capable 3B/2B/SS. He's 35 years old now, but a 1-year deal to help us see what we have with Urias would be perfect.
  4. I'm a big fan of Hill when he is actually pitching, but he's a bit of a lottery ticket given his age and durability. I'm not sure the Brewers are a team that should really be spending on a lottery ticket. If he's cheap then I'm all for it though.
  5. The difference would not be that large. He would still be a 3+ WAR player there. This situation is different but arguably analogous, in that we now have two 2B and a hole at 3B and only one of those two 2B can move there. Again, my preference would be to use Hiura at 1B/DH, but I'm just pointing out that it is not clear yet what Stearns actually is planning. That question might be answered by whether or not we bring in another 1B/3B free agent.
  6. You have literally one of the best if not the best defensive 2B in baseball and you're going to move him to a position he's never played in his career to keep an absolute defensive butcher at his position? I don't think so. And presumably Wong's plus defense would translate to 3B, a position we currently have a vacancy at. I'm not saying it's what I would do, but would you really be shocked if the organization who moved Moustakas to 2B would do this? For the record, moving Wong to 3B would not even affect his "value" given that, unless I'm mistaken, WAR uses the same positional adjustment for 2B and 3B. His defensive value likely could even increase at 3B.
  7. Honestly, for all this discussion about Hiura, I would not be at all surprised if he stays at 2B and Wong moves full-time to 3B.
  8. Hiura would have to be Braun-at-3B-level bad at 1B for this to not be a huge overall upgrade on defense. (If he even plays there at all, I suspect Stearns is confident there will be a DH in 2021.)
  9. Ok, forget Turner, just need C.J. Cron to complete the picture! 2017-2020 vs RHP LHB 2B Kolten Wong - .273/.362/.410/.772, .333 wOBA, 108 wRC+ RHB CF Lorenzo Cain - .284/.356/.388/.744, .327 wOBA, 102 wRC+ LHB LF Christian Yelich - .302/.401/.556/.957, .400 wOBA, 151 wRC+ RHB DH Keston Hiura - .274/.344/.552/.896, .373 wOBA, 131 wRC+ LHB 1B Daniel Vogelbach - .227/.354/.459/.812, .347 wOBA, 120 wRC+ RHB RF Avisail Garcia - .268/.320/.441/.760, .324 wOBA, 104 wRC+ LHB C Omar Narvez - .278/.355/.428/.783, .339 wOBA, 114 wRC+ RHB 3B Daniel Robertson - .231/.337/.343/.680, .306 wOBA, 94 wRC+ RHB SS Orlando Arcia - .251/.296/.376/.672, .286 wOBA, 73 wRC+ 2017-2020 vs LHP RHB SS Luis Urias - .337/.373/.500/.873, .372 wOBA, 133 wRC+ RHB CF Lorenzo Cain - .306/.378/.474/.851, .363 wOBA, 126 wRC+ LHB LF Christian Yelich - .294/.377/.528/.905, .381 wOBA, 138 wRC+ RHB 1B C.J. Cron - .291/.353/.566/.919, .380 wOBA, 142 wRC+ RHB RF Avisail Garcia - .320/.379/.494/.873, .369 wOBA, 134 wRC+ RHB DH Keston Hiura - .240/.322/.357/.679, .291 wOBA, 77 wRC+ LHB 2B Kolten Wong - .272/.331/.355/.686, .299 wOBA, 86 wRC+ RHB C Manny Pina - .272/.333/.402/.735, .317 wOBA, 93 wRC+ RHB 3B Daniel Robertson - .239/.351/.370/.721, .321 wOBA, 104 wRC+
  10. I think it implies an inability to hit. If you just want ISO, I bet we could get Jay Bruce for cheap. He hit 26 HR in 2019.. with a .261 OBP.
  11. His last full season he was also 118th out of 135 qualified hitters in ISO, which suggests, while maybe not swinging a noodle, he's not really swinging a bat either. Maybe a twig? Have you heard of this stat called OBP? It's not all about hitting HR.
  12. Always amusing to see how some viral falsehood can take off on these forums. Wong has a "noodle" bat? The last full season he hit .285/.361/.423/.784 with 11 HR and 24 SB (and elite defense).
  13. wRC+ is a great measure of a player relative to all hitters in the league while ignoring their position. As a 2B, Wong is above average offensively. Since 2015 there have been 30 2nd basemen to have 2,000 plate appearances. Wong ranks 21st in wRC+. If we just take out the pandemic 2020 season and go to 2019 there were 19 qualified 2nd basemen, Wong was 10th in wRC+ and that was with a career high 108 wRC+. If we use his career 96 wRC+ he would've been 13th. He's just not in any way above average offensively at 2nd. Selecting for 2B with 2,000+ PA is in no way reflective of what is "average" for MLB 2B's. Wong is an excellent defender and a decent hitter (the kind who actually gets on base, which is the best kind of decent hitter). Perhaps you personally would have preferred a poor defender who hits much better, but that has very little to do with whether this was a good signing or not.
  14. People were complaining about the front office not doing anything, and they just went out and got a 3-4 WAR player, and people still don't like it? I can't see anything to dislike about this other than that it probably ends any chance of Hiura becoming a career 2B. 2017-2020 prorated WAR per 162 games: 3.7 fWAR 4.2 rWAR
  15. This would be a fantastic lineup. Could fill things out by bringing in a cheap righty masher for the bench like Matt Joyce. 2017-2020 vs RHP CF Lorenzo Cain - .327 wOBA, 102 wRC+ LF Christian Yelich - .400 wOBA, 151 wRC+ 2B Keston Hiura - .373 wOBA, 131 wRC+ 3B Justin Turner - .369 wOBA, 133 wRC+ 1B Daniel Vogelbach - .347 wOBA, 120 wRC+ RF Avisail Garcia - .324 wOBA, 104 wRC+ C Omar Narvaez - .339 wOBA, 114 wRC+ SS Orlando Arcia - .286 wOBA, 73 wRC+ 2017-2020 vs LHP CF Lorenzo Cain - .363 wOBA, 126 wRC+ LF Christian Yelich - .381 wOBA, 138 wRC+ 3B Justin Turner - .423 wOBA, 168 wRC+ 1B C.J. Cron - .380 wOBA, 142 wRC+ RF Avisail Garcia - .369 wOBA, 134 wRC+ SS Luis Urias - .372 wOBA, 133 wRC+ 2B Keston Hiura - .291 wOBA, 77 wRC+ C Manny Pina - .317 wOBA, 93 wRC+
  16. Excellent post, Mr. Allen! I think Cron should be a priority, especially since it looks like we might be headed toward extending the NL DH in 2021, making it much easier to carry two 1B/DH types.
  17. Agreed, Paxton makes a lot of sense if the cost isn’t substantial. Can't imagine Paxton will be cheap considering how recently he was seen as an emerging ace. But agreed that if he is willing to do a 1-year contract to prove himself after a 6.64 ERA and injury last season (5 GS), we should be all over that.
  18. I'm optimistic that the NL Central still looks wide open even if the Brewers don't add anybody. Have you looked at the Cardinals roster, even with Arenado?
  19. Could the Hall of Fame be any more meaningless at this point? The writers' personal grudges have ruined its legitimacy beyond repair. FWIW, I hate Schilling but he deserves to be in based on his career. But none of this matters anymore after Barry Bonds was not a unanimous first-ballot selection.
  20. Dodgers have lots of flexibility on their roster. If they don't want to give Turner a third year, or whatever else their limit is, they can look somewhere else. Wouldn't be shocked for example if they signed Ozuna, moved Bellinger to 1B and Muncy to 3B. At the end of the day though, we need to overpay to get him to come here most likely
  21. He's coming off a shoulder injury and was a defense-only player last year. Don't have to go far searching for red flags. It's not like the Cardinals won a lottery or something. Colorado has been very publicly shopping Arenado for a long time. Every other team in the majors could have easily bested that offer (or, since Arenado had to waive his no-trade clause, any contender at least).
  22. $25 million per year with an opt out after 2021 and/or 2022 like he has now?? Absolutely 100000% yes! Would you have given up nothing prospects AND gotten $50 mill cash to acquire him in a trade?? Anyone that says they wouldn't needs to have their head examined. Particularly given the opt-outs that is a franchise-ruining risk though. What if his shoulder is messed up and he has a terrible 2021? I would genuinely rather have Justin Turner going into this season, and he is available for much cheaper.
  23. Would you sign Arenado for that contract if he were just a free agent coming off a shoulder injury and a terrible year?
  24. 2021 Stats Nolan Arenado: .253/.303/.434/.737, .308 wOBA Jedd Gyorko: .248/.333/.504/.837, .351 wOBA [sarcasm]Advantage: Milwaukee.[/sarcasm]
  25. Give him 3 years and a $5 million option for a fourth, or something like that. We need some offense!
