  1. In the park they play in, this strategy really makes a lot of sense. [sarcasm]Especially with Mike Moustakas manning SS/2B[/sarcasm]
  2. $24mil is he is good and a third year is added on. I think this topic has come up before, but I’d much rather have a pitcher who is elite 5 months and horrid one month instead of the guy who is essentially average every month. I think they could end up similar, but personally Wade Miley definitely has a higher ceiling. Miley has also been really durable over his career, Anderson not so much. Making the assumption we could have brought him back on similar terms (maybe true or maybe not) I would have easily taken Miley...but that is just me. How exactly does Wade Miley have a higher ceiling? Because he miraculously had a 2.57 ERA for us in 80.2 IP (versus a 4.30 xFIP)? Anderson has been better throughout his career when he actually pitches, and he's younger. I'll grant you that in his career Miley has been more durable, but not really in recent years. One year of a risky pitcher versus two to three more expensive years of an older risky pitcher who will give you the same results. No brainer.
  3. Up to $24 million if he is actually good. Makes the Brett Anderson signing look great, in my opinion. They were basically the same pitcher last year.
  4. Not sure how Steamer purports to be able to predict defense, but in any event I think that is probably projecting him to be slightly below average plus the -7.5 positional adjustment for being a corner outfielder, just to put it in context. I'm not quite sure how or why they would project him to be significantly worse than his career or recent UZR numbers when he is only 28. It could be that they are projecting him to play a little bit of CF for us, based on the percentage of games payed there in the most recent season. I think ZiPS does "dumb" positional projections like that. Though obviously Garcia is behind Cain, Yelich, Gamel, Taylor, and Broxton in our CF depth chart. His offensive numbers should also get a significant boost if nothing else from the Brewers being able to let him accumulate higher portion of PA against LHP, given that not all four of Yelich, Cain, Braun, and Garcia are like to amass 559+ PA.
  5. Yes but Braun would be replacing mostly Eric Thames. To me that's a wash, and this is a straight upgrade from Braun to Garcia plus the added value of moving Yelich back to LF. I don’t think Braun is as good as Thames as a 1B, but to each their own. Braun’s short time at 1B certainly did not reflect very good defense. If it was anywhere near Thames level I feel as though we would have seen them more often. I'm not expecting him to be good, though in actual fact I think the reason we never saw him there again is because we had two breakout players who could really only play 1B (or OF, which would have defeated the purpose). Braun was supposed to be the weak side of a 1B platoon with Thames in 2018, but when Aguilar blew up it became unnecessary. Last season once Aguilar imploded they just started using Grandal to give him days off from catching.
  6. Just because he's on the same team as Tim Dillard does not in fact mean he is in the Brewers system, even though it should.
  7. Some footage here of Fastball Freddy throwing a slider and change up. https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/mining-the-news-12-16-19/
  8. Moose is a solid player, Donaldson is a borderline Hall of Fame player, I don't think they are really comparable other than the fan sentimental value of having Moose back (which I doubt Stearns cares about). Personally I think the Brewers will get outbid, but I don't understand the assumption that we are not in play here. Sure we are never going to sign one of those $200 million+ mega contracts, but Stearns has not shied away from big free agent deals if the value is there (Cain) and we still have a lot of payroll space even after a substantial cut to last year's playoff-making payroll.
  9. Urias is a top 20 prospect, I absolutely would have considered him an overpay. ([sarcasm]But I keep forgetting how he turned into a bum once he joined the Brewers organization.[/sarcasm]) I take you point though that this seems like a very light return for Kluber.
  10. They're set up to punish LHP! Last three years (2017-2019) vs LHP: Urias - .404 wOBA (small sample) Yelich - .373 wOBA Braun - .369 wOBA Garcia - .368 wOBA Cain - .362 wOBA Could use another RHP masher as the backup 1B or as 3B to join Yelich and Hiura (both with >.400 wOBA vs RHP)
  11. Yes but Braun would be replacing mostly Eric Thames. To me that's a wash, and this is a straight upgrade from Braun to Garcia plus the added value of moving Yelich back to LF.
  12. [sarcasm]Brewerfan.net: Stearns is a cheapskate! Why won't he spend $300 million on Gerrit Cole? Brewerfan.net: Ouch, Kevin Gausman money for an everyday OF who had a 4.5 WAR season a couple years ago? Bit too expensive.[/sarcasm]
  13. My guess is that this leaked from Garcia or his friends/family to that local reporter in Miami, as opposed to the normal free agent signing leak to a national reporter from agents or teams, and so it just became a story a little earlier than normal. It presumably takes a while to do the paperwork even after a deal is agreed to. I highly doubt he is leaving us hanging while checking for better offers, etc.
  14. Gio Gonzalez has become the Wilmer Flores of pitchers. Consistently good and yet these jabronie front offices treat him like he's chopped liver.
  15. I don't think that's a given that we could have beaten it. Cleveland reportedly asked the Angels for their #2 prospect behind Jo Adell, whose name I can't recall but he was ranked #74 overall by Baseball America, plus another piece. Our only top 100 caliber prospect is Brice Turang, and he may not fit Cleveland's needs because he is nowhere near the majors. If they wanted an MLB-ready OF and high upside RP, and they seemingly value Clase like a top 100 prospect, then I don't see us having a matching package. (I'm excluding obvious overpays like Hiura, Urias, etc.)
  16. Why would we trade a 2018 MVP candidate who somehow still managed an averagish 2019 campaign despite visibly wincing in pain the entire season? Hot take: Cain will outperform Yelich by fWAR next season.
  17. I suspect Ray will cost way too much to make it worth our while, but it would be amusing to have both Robbie Ray and Brett Anderson in the same rotation. Basically exact opposites.
  18. Obviously reasonable people can disagree about whether Garcia would be a smart signing, whether he moves the needle, whether Moustakas is a better player because he plays 3B/2B, etc., but it's an objective fact that they are remarkably similar hitters over their careers. Even if you only value HR and RBI (rather than advanced metrics or even just ordinary AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS), they are remarkably similar: Avisail Garcia career: 74.13 RBI/600 PA Mike Moustakas career: 74.19 RBI/600 PA Avisail Garcia career: 19.0 HR/600 PA Mike Moustakas career: 24.1 HR/600 PA Moustakas only hit more than 22 HR in a season for the first time in 2017... when he was the age Garcia will be in 2020.
  19. Yes, please Cincinnati, start playing Moose at SS! “The way you look at our team, the obvious spot where he fits in right away is at second base, but things happen,” said Bell. “And he’s going to be with us at least four years. Having the ability to play first base, play some third base… I really wouldn’t hesitate to put him at short every now and then. He has that kind of feel, and that kind of presence and awareness on the field. Not that he’s going to play there a lot.” https://blogs.fangraphs.com/sunday-notes-ben-cherington-aspires-to-build-the-bucs-still-cherishes-cistulli/
  20. To make this trade more relevant for Scrappin' Stearns, the Indians just DFA'd utility guy Mike Freeman to make room on their 40-man roster. He might be worth a flier given our current options. Last season he was worth 1.0 fWAR in 75 games.
  21. Again, he projects about as good offensively as Moose. Was he a bottom of the barrel player in your mind too? Projections projections projections! I think this is what irritates me so much about every cheap signing the Brewers make. People will say well he projects to be the same as so and so. Except to this point in their careers they haven't produced like player so and so has. Projections aren't worth the paper they are printed on. You know what matters?? PRODUCTION. Until you prove you are as good as so and so, projections mean crap. Avisail Garcia career: .273/.323/.428/.751, .322 wOBA, 103 wRC+ (park adjusted) Mike Moustakas career: .252/.310/.441/.751, .321 wOBA, 99 wRC+ (park adjusted) Avisail Garcia 2017-2019: .288/.337/.473/.810, .342 wOBA, 117 wRC+ Mike Moustakas 2017-2019: .259/.319/.498/.817, .340 wOBA, 110 wRC+ Garcia will turn 29 next season, Moustakas will turn 32
  22. Could be Stearns to trying to get him to sign some weird deal, like two years with multiple team options or something like that.
  23. I don't think Stearns had any interest in bringing Moustakas or Grandal back. The only reason we signed them in the first place is because they were on affordable one-year deals, rather than the multiyear deals they got that are going to be harmful to their signing teams down the road. Stearns is very value-oriented. Although a 1B platoon still seems attractive to me as a fan (with a guy like C.J. Cron), my hunch is that he didn't want to bring Thames back (at least not without a discount) because he values roster flexibility and was tired of having to carry two 1B. Thames was very good for us overall, but he is a true platoon player who cannot hit LHP.
  24. Braun is still a very good hitter, I don't see why we would dump him. It fills a huge hole if they think he can handle 1B more or less full time.
  25. That's true of any trade or FA signing that ends up working out for the acquiring team. Drew Pomeranz could weirdly turn into an ace closer over the next few years, that wouldn't make the dumb deal San Diego gave him any smarter.
