  1. The pitching coach connection seems ridiculous to me. The goal with Gray is to repeat what he was doing early in his career with Oakland. Has nothing to do with Johnson.
  2. Not to derail the thread further, but he never threw anybody under the bus. That guy created legitimate chain-of-custody issues which is why Braun successfully fought the test on procedural grounds.
  3. Not in practice, because assigning errors is incredibly subjective and players are still punished for bobbling balls that they get to as opposed to simply not getting to them. It has to be incredibly obviously an impossible play for an error not to get assigned if the fielder gets to the ball. Almost every player with incredible range is going to have a worse fielding percentage. Didi Gregorious and Asdrubal Cabrera had a higher fielding percentage at SS than Andrelton Simmons last season.
  4. Do you think so? I'd be interested in this empirically, but I'm skeptical. A first round pick in the top 20 generally ends up toward the top of the prospect list if the system is barren, but even with an average system that pick is lower (like with the Brewers and Turang) much less a guy outside the first round entirely.
  5. But fielding percentage is almost inversely accurate to a player's range. If you can get to a huge range of balls but miss incredibly difficult plays on the periphery, you'll have a worse fielding percentage. If you have the range of a rock but make solid throws you will have a 100% fielding percentage.
  6. I suspect the Brewers have a lot more leadership than you are aware of. There's player with tons of respect in their clubhouse, and not necessarily the guys you'd expect. Perez is one for certain. So is Aguilar and Cain is off the charts. Yelich? Certainly and he has the hardware to command respect. I think Braun is clearly the leader in the clubhouse, but anything having to do with Braun divides opinion around here
  7. Even if we signed Machado it wouldn't really solve our problem at 2B. I don't think Shaw is going to play a full season there, and it makes no sense to replace him at 3B when he is one of our better position players (even factoring his issues with LHP). In theory, we could use Machado at SS and then trade Arcia for some pitching or a 2B.
  8. Meh, wouldn't mind having him, but there's reasonable odds that Bobby Wahl ends up having a better 2019 season than Ottavino.
  9. Nelson hasn't pitched in a live game in well over a year. He's definitely going to be on a different pace than everybody else, though I wouldn't read into it that there are still lingering injury issues.
  10. The Yankees org is very skilled at a manipulating the market via the media. I doubt there is a heated bidding war going on between seven teams.
  11. What exactly was he supposed to say, "my agent miscalculated and I wish I was on the Mets instead?"
  12. Braun was hitting balls very hard into bad-luck outs the whole first half, and then in the second half he put up a .370 wOBA/132 wRC+. That's about what he did over the full season in 2016 (.378 wOBA, 134 wRC+). I agree that Braun is a stealth candidate to anchor the offense.
  13. Yeah there's no way or reason he would have taken a club option. A mutual option makes more sense because it basically replicates a qualifying offer without the negative effects if he declines.
  14. That's kind of a huge detail! Incredible signing if it's a team option.
  15. All the more reason not to trade him then. When Knebel is healthy he is one of the best relievers in franchise history, including the second half of last season.
  16. I don't think WAR works for relief pitchers. At all. Certainly not when assessing market value. (Compare what Jed Lowrie just got to what Zach Britton just got)
  17. The pick we gave up for Grandal is so low as to be a complete non-factor when signing a player of Grandal's caliber. I don't think the Claudio trade necessarily means that Stearns undervalues draft picks, but instead that many people on this forum are drastically undervaluing Claudio.
  18. I'm a big fan of Dubon but you're still penciling in a prospect to have a good first MLB season to rely on him. In my ideal world the roster near the end of these season would have Hiura as the everyday 2B, Dubon as the backup SS/utility guy, and an offense-first bench infielder like Cabrera.
  19. Thanks for the list MrAllen! I also learned that Matt Davidson was non-tendered by the White Sox and is a free agent. He hits LHP quite well but is more of a 3B/1B with so-so defense. Career splits: vs RHP - 87 wRC+ vs LHP - 118 wRC+
  20. Did you not see him when he was absolutely white hot for significant stretches in 2018 and 2017? He's not that good, but I think there's a lot of recency bias where people are remembering his poor end to 2018 (probably due to injury/sporadic playing time).
  21. I trust Knebel even more than I trust Hader, so I would have to be really blown away to deal him. He wasn't fully healthy to start the season. Second half: 30.0 IP, 15.6 K/9, 1.76 FIP, 1.89 xFIP
  22. Disagree. He's not a great shortstop at this point in his career, but I don't get the sense that he has terrible defense at 3B or 2B.
  23. A platoon would likely put up similar numbers than Cabrera with better defense. Although I would definitely take Cabrera over Harrison. No idea what Cabrera is looking for in terms of a contract. If we're platooning Spangenberg/Perez at 2B, then Shaw is starting every single game against LHP. Cabrera brings much better offense and allows Perez to play elsewhere.
  24. Manny Pina's contract includes a 2020 option with a $150k buyout. Also some incentives: Come on! If Manny Pina wins NL MVP he deserves more than a $100k bonus
