  1. okay, but how about sound? How are they making "Gone with the Wind" into a DTS 7.1 surround mix without either (a) downmixing the original audio into the 7.1 channels, or (b) just adding sound effects to the original audio? I can understand the upgrading of the video quality (I guess what you've said makes sense, it just doesn't seem possible. Besides, many people prefer the original version of movies, just like their LPs of classic albums.) But the audio is a whole different jungle, to me, short of "cheating" your way through the improvement process.
  2. The Baseball Bunch? I remember that show with Johnny Bench, Tommy Lasorda, the San Diego Chicken, and the miscellaneous MLB star every week. Ted Simmons taught kids how to switch hit. I went out and tried it right after the show.
  3. how do they make a high-def film transfer of an old film like Casablanca? Or any old film that was originally done on plain old celluloid? How do they make it look and sound so much clearer and better than before (if it really does look and sound better, that is.)?
  4. maybe they'll show some winter league action. That'd be nice to see some baseball in the winter that is going on in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, or wherever.
  5. where will this network (studio) be based? New York because of the NY offices of MLB? That will kinda sorta determine if the broadcasts will be NYY-BOS centric or not.
  6. I'm sure not many people realize it but taking the word of Chris Berman, Mike Golic, Don Shula, Jillian Barberie, and countless other celebrities to try the Nutrasystem diet plan really bugs me. I mean, (a) they are paid spokespeople, (b) they can AFFORD the plan since they are rich, and © at a little less than $3.00 per meal (let's say $2.50 for this exercise), it costs you $12.50 a day (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, snack), $87.50 per week, and $4,550.00 per year. Sure, some will argue, that's the equivalent of what we spend on groceries at our house. But this is $87.50 per week FOR ONE PERSON! (not to mention any hidden fees, and membership accounts to join.) Why do so many people fail at the Nutrasystem diet (while spokespeople can make it look so bleeding easy to succeed?) Because they can afford it and the public is unaware of what it really costs.
  7. as long as they get back to the game and it's Boston 0 Tampa Bay 9, I'll be happy. Fat lot of good it did in game 5, but still . . . .
  8. okay, where's the game??? Game 6 supposed to be on now but TBS is showing "Steve Harvey Show".
  9. I think the Suppan signing was a "good" thing in the long run, because it showed potential free-agents that Milwaukee is now a place that will pay for a signing. Milwaukee used to be like Green Bay in the NFL back in the 80s and early 90s--pretty much Siberia. Nobody wanted to come here unless it was a last resort. The Suppan signing told people that Milwaukee was ready to contend and were willing to put out the money to get it done. Sure, Suppan has definitely NOT been worth the money, but, perhaps, it will help other free-agents to consider Milwaukee as a destination to play and win. As for the overhauling the roster to improve the OBP and such, I don't think that's entirely necessary. Look at the Cubs from '07 to '08--they were middle of the pack in runs and OBP in one year, changed the roster just a little (Fukudome in the off-season, Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds a month into the season) and BINGO! They were the hottest offensive team in the league with a league-leading OBP to boot (something like a .050 difference from '07 if I remember correctly). So it can happen with the Brewers (or any team, really) with a little plate discipline. Or black magic (I'll assume that's what the Cubs used.) As for this thread, I'm happy that Melvin will be back for three years. He is integral to our team's future. When it comes to managerial candidates, Showalter always starts off good with his players but wears thin quickly with his "rules" and "headmaster ways" (the stories I could tell you from his D-Back days. . . ) However, someone else did point out the truism that once he leaves, the team seems to win the World Series the following year. I'd prefer Bobby Valentine, myself. Sure, he's got an ego, but his time in Japan may have brought him down a rung or two. Plus, I love his attitude toward the game, his strategies, and the fact that he tells it like it is. Having managed in Japan may have given him some more ideas to try in the Major Leagues, too.
  10. next time he does it, pull out a tuba or some other loud racket-maker on your property until he gets the hint. Or bring out an electric fan from the house, along with yards of extension cord to blow his smoke off your property. It's subtle but effective. If he still doesn't get it, you call the cops for trespassing.
  11. I think he's a candidate but I doubt he wins. Too tentative on plays near the wall/over his head (running/jumping catches at the wall seem to be a biggie for Gold Glove winners), the plays he did make dives for really weren't all that spectacular or out-of-the-ordinary when it comes to effort, and he plays left field. If Andrew Jones wins again, we definitely know the fix is in.
  12. which one? The Ortiz blast or the Drew homer? They were BOTH either way biased calls or just going with the crowd energy. My hope is #2. Figures that the Sox will make things interesting and now everyone will be saying that the Sox have all the momentum, all the energy, and will definitely win the series, etc. etc. I was so nice hearing Fenway Park be so quiet. I still think this would have all been avoided had Gabe Gross not pulled up on that Pedroia RBI hit in the 7th. On the fairly catchable ball, he held up and played the ball safe (in a 7-0 game, of course, so it made sense) and let the ball drop where if he took another step and a slide would easily have made the catch to end the inning. Seriously, Gross took 2-3 pitter-patter steps to prepare for the crow-hop and throw to third on the play when he could have made a pretty darn good effort to make the catch and keep the game at 7-0.
  13. The Dwight stuff was the only thing funny for me. Maybe the Golden Shower comment, but it was pretty crude and many people don't even get it, I'm sure. But I really only laughed when Dwight was "testing" the stroller. I wish they would have either (a) shown what the stroller looked like when he put it in the trunk, or (b) had a scene with Jan taking it out of the trunk back in NY, instead of the Jim and Pam phone call to end the episode.
  14. yeah, I believe so. I inquired a few years ago about doing the camp without the hotel (since I live nearby) and it was still a hefty price but they cut a few hundred off the total, as well as making me feel about 3-inches tall, stating something along the lines of, "sure you can stay at home but then you'll miss out on all the camaraderie of the after hours activities. Why would you do that?" to which I wanted to respond with, "why couldn't I still go out the bars with Gorman Thomas and have dinner with the players but just stay at home to save on a hotel room?" but I didn't. Needless to say, I haven't done the camp yet. But it's on my Christmas wish list for some year (sooner than later, I hope.)
  15. I'm hoping the Phillies get to the World Series, play the Rays, but lose, just so Jenkins can say, "Great, now I have to come back to Philly in 10 year, 20 years, 25 years, and maybe even 50 years to celebrate another one of those anniversaries for a pennant winner." And then he'll pause and say, "Wait a minute, they only do that in Milwaukee. I'm okay after all." Seriously, I didn't see the Stairs home run or the Jenkins reaction at all (still haven't) but I'm sure it was "kid-in-a-candy-store"-ish. Good for him. I'm glad that he would have went to the playoffs had he stayed in Milwaukee, too, but got to do it on his new team also. But really I want the Rays to win it all so I won't be all that happy that he won a title the year after he was with the Crew.
  16. you might be able to convince me to trade Braun for David Wright. Maybe.
  17. I have noticed that AVG Free is having issues with Zonealarm tonight. AVG is stating that about 10 files from Zone alarm are trojan horse files, which, of course, is not true. Not sure if this is related to your problem or not but I've seen it all over the web. Time for me to get off the net tonight and hope it gets fixed overnight. I know that i uninstalled and reinstalled these programs a handful of times as well as re-starting my computer at least 10 times while I was having trouble with the internet.
  18. thread title originally read "Where to get a good deal on a gun?" Maybe it was my state of mind or the crime shows on television that I watch but my first thought was not about hunting. Sorry that I offended anyone for making a thread title a little more clear.
  19. just wondering, is oil actually placed inside of 42-gallon barrels? Or do they just use barrels as a standard of measurement for pricing purposes?
  20. I am sorry for your trouble, zurch, but at least some good came out of this--I've spent most of the day doing some general maintenance, cleanup, defragging, and full backups onto my external hard drive of both my wife's and my computers. I encourage others to do so, too, if you don't already. I couldn't believe it had been 6 months since my wife last backed up her data!
  21. I understand exactly what you mean, but at the same time you have to look at our farm system and see that we really are not producing big-time arms for the major league bullpen, so what's Melvin supposed to do then? I really hope that sometime our minor league pitchers will just go bananas and give the Brewers 2-3 quality arms for the bullpen that will be on the team a good 5 or 6 years. The Orioles tried the bullpen FA signing thing a few years ago and it REALLY tanked. We were lucky this year that our starting pitching and, except for September (and all year when RISP w/2 out), our hitters kept the team around the top of the division. Todd Coffey as a reliever for the Crew? I thought it was hard to believe last month--especially with some of those career numbers in Cincinnati. But, perhaps, he does need that change of scenery. He's always had a very live arm so maybe the Crew "stole" one, for once, off the waiver wire. I'd give him one year but I'd be iffy on a 2-year deal or more.
  22. surprised that nobody had posted yet. Very funny episode, overall, although the ending was dumb, in my opinion. I was cracking up during the "Battlestar Gallactica" scene, though.
  23. yeah, Al, I know exactly what you're saying. Personally, I am not worried one iota quite yet. Sure, it's depressing that I'm losing money but I'm young enough to get it all back and then some. Although, one of my accounts is just a liquid cash builder fund (we've been putting money into it for a rainy day event) and it kind of hurts that it's losing money, too, especially if something happens tomorrow that we need that money.
  24. got another set of Quarterly statements today. Very depressing to read, I'll say that. But I'll stick with it and hope to buy up stuff on the cheap and reap some benefits (if and) when the market bounces back.
  25. you know, I've got to admit that after years and years of looking at that logo, I never noticed the Buccaneer winking at me before. No wonder they got rid of it!
